Welcome To DLVORG:

Welcome to all volunteers, new and returning.

We had an excellent response to our Call For volunteers
following DLV 2009 and those who volunteered are now on
this mailing list.

This is the DLV Organizational mailing list, which we call
DLVORG, and you can expect mailings to come out as needed,
usually once every 1-2 weeks or so, more often when there
are time-sensitive items, less often during slow times,
and picking up in frequency as we approach the dates of
DLV 2010.

Our job is to plan and implement the next DLV event, in the
spring of 2010.

For those who are new to the DLV volunteer scene, please feel
free to jump right in, add to the discussions, propose ideas,
activities, etc.

There are no stupid questions, no stupid ideas, no stupid
comments, no stupid activity suggestions, etc!

We'll have a number of mailings coming out shortly which will
cover the items needing our immediate attention.

We try to make decisions by consensus, but if there's no
consensus, we make a motion and vote, using a kind of
modified "Roberts" on-line method.

Those eligible to vote are those who are on record as
coordinating or assisting with at least one activity during
the last two DLVs. An updated list of those of voting status
will appear shortly in a subsequent mailing.

All of you here, regardless of voting status, may fully
participate in the discussions, raise motions, and may
propose and sponsor activities, etc., and, of course,
volunteer for specific functions. (That's how you obtain
voting status.)

One important thing to remember in the ORG group here
is that it's ok to agree to disagree. We do have quite
a diverse group here, representing all points on the TG
spectrum and then some. Differing views are encouraged,
and playing devil's advocate is cool. Just remember to
respect each individual as a person and their point of
view as being valid from their perspective.

New and different ideas are always welcome. If you have
something in mind that you think DLV people would enjoy,
put it on the table, even if it's something really out in
left field. As all of you know, some of our activities are
most certainly atypical for a TG gathering. We had some
very successful activities last year which were unique,
and we would like to see more fresh ideas for DLV 2010.

In most all cases, those who volunteer to plan and implement
a DLV activity are the decision makers regarding that
activity. Of course the group as a whole has the final say
on what activities will and will not appear on the schedule.
We work as a group to combine the activities into the most
effective format and schedule.

Any questions or concerns, now is the time.

Our duties moving forward:

Here's a quick summary of what we need to do over the next
several days, weeks, and months.

Immediate items:

1. Any additional summarizing, rehashing, finalizing, etc.
of the 2009 event. What worked, what did not, lessons learned,
best practices to use when going forward, etc.

2. Discussion and setting of the DLV 2010 dates. A special
mailing regarding the DLV 2010 dates will be sent out
shortly.

3. Filling the vacant Project Manager position. See below.

4. Filling the expiring "odd year" term on the Administrative
Committee, currently held by Lisa.

5. Any administrivial or other matters which may take time and
need discussion, which should be done during the "slow" season.
. . . . .

Near-term items:

1. Nominating and voting on suggested hotels for DLV 2010.
This is normally done during the fall, with the hotels being
announced in early December. I will be introducing two motions
regarding suggested hotels in the near future.

2. The rough blocking-in of the schedule for DLV 2010.

3. Discussion of activities, large and small, for DLV 2010.

4. Any business which may distract from the planning of the
event, and therefore needs to be taken care of during the
slow months.

Project Manager for DLV 2010:

Our Administrative Committee has declared the position of
Project Manager for the DLV 2010 year to be vacant.

This position is now a one-year appointment.

My term (Annie) officially ended July 1.

Aiko was to have re-assumed this position for 2010, but she
has relinquished it, voluntarily, in good standing.

This is something that needs to be filled before the actual
planning for DLV 2010 can begin.

As I have stated, I (Annie) am willing to take this for one
more year, subject to the approval of the group here, of
course.

If anybody wants to arm-wrestle me for this position, speak
now, and we can take a vote. Just remember, be careful what
you ask for, you may get it! :)

I do not intend to retain the position for the 2011 event.

In 2011 it will be somebody else's turn, again.

Two consecutive years seems like a very appropriate "maximum
sentence" for this. :)

If you are a previously-active volunteer who would like to
assume more of a leadership role for the 2011 event and
beyond, please think about it and let us know you are
interested so we can start getting you in the loop on
various things.

Administrative Committee nominations:

Another vacancy to fill ...

The "odd year" at-large Administrative Committee seat,
currently held by Lisa, expires this summer. We need to
hold an election to fill that seat.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Administrative
Committee, it's a group of DLVers responsible for the
non-activity DLV goings-on. Further information on the
Administrative Committee appears in the "Administrivia"
section of our web site.

I would like to open the floor for nominations for this
vacant seat. If you know of someone who you think would
be a good candidate for this position, please send in
a nomination. Self-nominations are appropriate.

The one requirement for the Administrative Committee is that
candidates be active volunteers of voting status, which means
they must be on record for coordinating at least one activity
over the past two annual DLV events.

Personally, I think it would be a Good Thing to have some
new blood and fresh perspectives on the Committee, meaning
I would support the nomination of someone who is relatively
new to the DLV organization, at least in a volunteer
capacity.

I'm going to name some names. If you're not listed here,
please don't be offended, as I'm just rattling off some
names that come to mind immediately and I'm not excluding
anyone intentionally.

Randi, Susan Rogers, Bob Miller, Britney, Holly, Kim Komplin,
and Kimberly Kael come to mind, as they were all very active
in the last year's event and they, among others of course,
showed a certain degree of enthusiasm that made a difference.
All of these are fairly new volunteers as well.

Anyway, if you would like to nominate someone (self-nominations
are cool) for the Administrative Committee, please reply to
this mailing and say so.
