Org List:

This is the DLV 2009 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Almost there:

First of all, our most urgent item is the Blue Ox situation for
Monday evening.

We need thoughts and feedback from all of you, promptly please,
regarding what we should do.
. . .

Second, big thanks to all who got all of the required information
in to get activity sign-up going. It's going to be a bit late, but
it looks like it will run smoothly.
. . .

As we round the turn and enter the stretch, most of our job should
now be things like filling in details, resolving missing and
hanging items, etc., and really, most of the big things are well
covered. Big thanks to all for this!

It's important that during these last few weeks that all of us
remain informed and responsive, both regarding our designated
activities and regarding DLV as a whole.

Please read any ORG mailings promptly, and please respond to any
items that pertain to you ASAP. If you don't know an answer at
the time, please respond saying that you don't know just now,
but have acknowleged the query.

I apologize in advance if I have to send out repetative and
progressively assertive notes for hanging items.
. . . . .

We usually have at least one late foul-up, and it's likely that
we'll see some snags over the next few weeks.

If you know of an activity that's not gonna happen, maybe a
venue closure, unforseen circumstances, whatever, please let
us know as soon as you know it. The sooner we know of things
that are not gonna happen, the better our options will be.

Likewise, if you're coordinating an activity, and for some
reason you're not going to make it to DLV, or won't be able
to follow through, let us know, the sooner the better. We
have dealt with things like this in the past, and should
they occur this year we will manage to deal with them.

Thus endeth the sermon, gang. Back to our program. :)

Laundry list:

* Dancing?

Diane, will you be taking this one?
. . .

* Pistol/rifle shooting?

Gina, costs involved? Is there a set fee? Approximate? Guess?
. . .

Short one! Nice, isn't it! Thanks to those who made it short! :)

Blue Ox Monday evening:

All: Please read what is going on, and give Kimberly (and Mindy
and Nora) some guidance here. I've made my comments perfectly
clear below, and quite honestly, I'm a bit disappointed in the
Blue Ox this year. :(

Gang, do we want to continue to negotiate with Blue Ox, or do
we want to regroup and explore other options?

Comments and ideas, please.
. . .

Kimberly, first of all, this is your baby, assisted directly by
Nora and Mindy, and guided by me and the other volunteers. I will
back you on your decisions. You are leading the charge here.

I do (still) have some major concerns which I'll share here and
I would like others here to chime in, as has been done on one
subtopic in another item below.

IMAO, $6.95 entry fee for the privilege of buying drinks at bar
price is totally out of line! QED! You may quote me on this if
you wish.

If the $6.95 is mainly for the deejay, we don't need it! If the
majority of the group feels the same as three volunteers have
stated (see below), we prefer the evening without a deejay.
Those who want music can feed the juke box.

Now, if they are concerned about getting stiffed by a whole
gaggle of non-eaters and non-drinkers, a minimum of one drink
at bar prices might be appropriate. Things like this are usual
and customary many places.

Here's what I would like to see:

No cover. No deejay. One drink minimum IFF they insist. Optional
dinner at market price. Optional slot tournament at an appropriate
entry fee.

I don't think this is too much to ask at all. I'm sure many bar
proprietors would LOVE to have us deliver 80-90 bodies to them
on an otherwise slow evening in an otherwise sucky economy!

If the market price of the dinner is $17.95 this year, then
the price of the dinner will be $17.95 this year, and the
first law of economics (willing buyer and willing seller
meet at the price point) will determine how many eaters
there are.

What would help dinner sales would be if an advance menu is
presented in, as it was last year, plus testimonials by word
of mouth that the food is good. What would also help dinner
sales is to reduce it to $12-13-ish. :)

They had a very good evening last year with nc/nm and $10.95
for dinner. I would think a similar deal should be possible
this year.
. . . . .

Well, gang, comments, please.

Do we move forward with plans for the Blue Ox, even if it means
a mandatory cover charge? It's really up to Kimberly (and Nora
and Mindy) as to how hard we push back on this.

Do we want to look at other options? I'm wondering if a place
like PT's over on Sahara might want 80-90 bodies on what would
normally be a slow monday?

Comments?
. . . . .

Regardless of what happens, I am going to have to go forward
with activity sign-up as planned, with the information that
is currently on the screen. ($17.95 for dinner, no mention of
any other charges.) If there ends up being a cover/minimum,
we can put it on the final schedule, subject to the resulting
fall-out.

I think I know the DLV group fairly well, and I can say with
a high degree of confidence that if people start arriving
and are hit with a $6.95 cover charge, many will turn back
and simply go elsewhere for the evening, and a good percentage
of those who pay it will complain.

Deejay at Blue Ox:

>>Any other comments, gang?

Norma writes:

. . .

And Mary Beth writes:

>I second the motion of no DJ at Blue Ox, for the same reason.
>It makes it harder to converse, it's not a dance, and we don't
>need the added expense.

Thanks MB and Norma.

My personal issue with the deejay is the expense, but we've now
had three similar responses regarding the noise. If a deejay is
to be there, we need to make it clear that we are the ones
paying for the evening and that we will reserve the right to
direct the volume down (or up?) if needed. This is standard
practice (client specifies the volume) in the wedding
entertainment industry.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Some price changes:

Prices have been adjusted, as per coordinators' instructions, on
two activities on the sign-up screen.

Night Of The Soiled Doves has been increased to $40. Aiko has
shown me the numbers resulting in this figure and they look
sane to me.

Price for the "A" ticket option for the Limo Tour has been
reduced. Fuel surcharge is less this year.

Anyone who wants to change their activity sign-ups due to these
changes can re-do the sign-up screen.

Boat Tour timing:

Diane writes:

>Morning,

Guten morgen, eh. (I am German and Canadian by heritage.) :) :)

>There should actually be two Boat Tour assembly times;
>one for the Coffee Cup Breakfast (9 & 10 oclock) and
>one for those just doing the Boat Cruise (Cruise begins
>at noon - assembly time of 10:15 ?)

Ok, I've adjusted the schedule. Please check it over to be
sure it looks sane.

Any decisions on carpool assembly areas?

Movie Night:

Amber Michelle writes:

>yes the movie night will still be star trek... i cant wait!!!
>it will be at the Brendan theatre at a the Palms.

Thanks, AM.

I'm assuming that showtimes will not be available at least
for a while. Please let us know when you know the time of
the feature your group will be attending.

Shooting assistant:

Eileen writes:

>If Gina still needs a shooting assistant, I will be happy to
>help.

There ya go, Gina. Thanks Eileen!

>I may require a ride to and from.

I already show two signed up for this who will have vehicles.
(The asterisk on the sign-up reports indicates a volunteer
driver.)

Have you (and/or Gina) selected a carpool assembly area?
