Org List:

This is the DLV 2009 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

This mailing:

The holiday season is now with us, and this has typically been
where attention to our event takes a holiday as well. We'll
plan on skipping the ORG list for the weeks of Christmas and
New Years, and possibly other weeks if the traffic is low.

Please continue with your thoughts and planning if time allows.

We will, however, begin testing the registration process, and
this year we'll send out the usual re-registration e-mails to
the ORG folks (that's you) early, probably next week some time.
. . .

The big burning question, and this seems to come up in just
about any conversation about DLV these days, is how much the
economy will impact our turnout. The bottom line is that we
will not know for sure until May and we will not even get a
clue until registrations start coming in.

However, the doomsayers' predictions of $7.00 gasoline and
$1200.00 domestic airfare seem to have died a very quiet
death! The economy is still a cluster-fornication, but the
sensationalistic doom and gloom regarding such things as
travel and fuel prices has, fortunately, been buried in
the Chernobyl sarcophagus!

One measurement I keep an eye on as an indicator of the
interest in DLV is the size of the mailing list, and in
particular the list join requests, each which indicates
a certain degree of interest in the next upcoming event.

These months leading up to the holidays have always been
our slowest as far as list growth is concerned, but I do
believe they give a good feel on the level of interest
out there before the hype and the excitement leading up
to DLV causes the list numbers to skyrocket.

Comparing the past three months this year with the same
three months last year (August 25 - November 25), we had
an increase of 9 (750-759) on the mailing list in 2007 and
an increase of 12 (852-864) over the same span this year.

This indicates to me that the level of interest in our
event is at least equal to, if not slightly stronger
than it was at this time last year.

How many of them we can convert into attendees is another
thing, but the good news here is that there's no decrease
in apparent interest in DLV!

Hotel vote results:

We have a winner!

Five of them, actually ...

All hotels were confirmed: Alexis Park, Gold Coast, Imperial
Palace, Paris, and St. Tropez.

Hotels are listed with yes, no, and abstain votes respectively.

Alexis Park 7, 1, 2
Gold Coast 6, 1, 3
Imperial Palance 7, 2, 1
Paris 9, 1, 0
St. Tropez 8, 1, 1

These now appear on the "Hotel" page of the DLV web site and
will be announced in next week's general mailing.

10 votes were received. Last vote was received Thursday at 7:02pm MST
and polls were closed Saturday, 7:02pm MST.

We did see a fair number of abstains, and also we note that
all hotels did get at least one NO vote. The vote response (10
votes) is somewhat lower that what we've been seeing in other
votes such as those on the schedule.

Raw votes appear below.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, nominations, discussions
and votes. I think we have a very good selection, and I really
can't think of any reason why anyone would not be satisfied
with at least one of the options.

EON nights:

Nora writes:

>I will be happy to coordinate an EON night for any night that an

>dining nights that are to be scheduled.

Thanks, Nora. I've added "Nora's choice" to both Tuesday and
Friday, and when you select the venues, please let us know and
I'll get these updated.

>There are a number of options that are available and there
>is time to select the venues.

What I would like to see for this coming year is more venues that
we have not used before, or have not used for a while.

I know I've done the EON thing at Milano's for several years now
and I'm tempted to change this for variety, but there's the fact
that we always get a good group for it and it's always rated
quite highly.

We're still open for more volunteers for these. For our Tuesday
thing, we want to go for smaller, more intimate dining groups, so
we can handle just about as many EON choices as we have volunteers
to plan them.

For Friday, we've talked about larger groups, and I think that
three options is about right. We do want to have at least one
which is affordable, and at least one which is perceived to be
safe for beginners. These two (affordable, safe) could be the
same if circumstances coincide. We've also had the demand for
upscale dining. I'm assuming that there will be a similar
demand for this in 2009, regardless of the state of the
economy.

Limo Tour volunteers needed:

Good news! JoAnn has re-arranged her schedule and will be able to
attend again this coming year! She will again be heading up the
Limo Tour, responsible for rate and route and general coordination.

I (Annie) will be doing ticketing again.

We are looking for two more volunteers to assist with the Limo
Tour for DLV 2009.

This is open both to those who have assisted with the Limo Tour
in the past and to those who have not. Volunteering to assist
with the Limo Tour satisfies the requirement for voting status.

Duties include assisting with beverage load-in, traffic direction
during passenger load-in and at all Limo Tour stops, answering
questions regarding the Limo Tour, and possible assistance with
Limo Tour ticketing, beverage purchase, and other related items.

Qualifications: The desire to help others have the time of their life!

Movie night Tuesday:

Jessie writes:

>I would not mind taking charge of a movie night for Tuesday night.

Thanks Jessie, I have you down as taking this on.

>I however do not know at this time what time and places movies are
>being shown. I do know that the new Start Trek movie opens on May
>8th and since it is a big title I am figuring that it will be in
>several theaters to be chosen from.

If the movie schedule is known prior to May 8, there will be time
to select a theater and showtime and get it on the DLV schedule
just in time for the LFM -- hopefully that is. :)

There are theaters all over the place in Las Vegas. There's a
popular one just north of the MGM on the Strip, and one at the
Palms that also shows many of the first-run features. Chances
are that both will be playing it. Orleans also has a first-run
theater on site.

Since it doesn't start until right before DLV, this will be one
of those just-in-time things for the Large Final Mailing. Please
be prepared to make a final decision as to theater and show time
the week before DLV.
