One issue has been brought up, so I am going to hold off on
announcing this for 48 hours pending a motion to reconsider.

Yes, I wish you would have mentioned this earlier. The two
timeframes were presented in the June 25 mailing along with
a call for any others.

+We now have two timeframes under consideration:

+1. Sunday, April 26 thru Friday, May 1.
+2. Monday, April 27 thru Saturday, May 2.

+Are there any other timeframes to be considered? If so, speak
+now.

However, it's not a done deal yet. We have not opened this up
for comments yet, and it's in no way final yet. We have the
option to reconsider the date selection up until the one-month
call for comments has ended.

One factor I think should be considered in selecting the dates
is that we do not lock out any longtimers or volunteers, in
particular those who have more difficult travel arrangements.

We'll entertain a motion to reconsider the dates for the next
48 hours. Please speak now or forever ...

Activity discussion:

Susan writes:

>Yes I will try to work the jam session. I'd like some input
>concerning what night would best augment the DLV schedule.

Overall, I would say that it depends on a number of factors,
but I would suggest one of the evenings that will be reserved
specifically for the multi-track items.

See the schedule discussion below.

>I want to be one of the actresses in the dinner theatre show.
>I think that this could be fun. I'm not qualified to run it.
>But if it doesn't interfere with the jam session, I'm willing
>to help.

I also think that the Murder Mystery would work best on one of
the multi-track evenings. Since there most likely will be two
of the multi-track nights, and you're interested in both
activities, you and Holly can pick opposite evenings from
within that realm.

Also remember that those who act sooner have the most options
available to them, so if you two get these two activities on the
schedule early, the others will have to work around you, as
opposed to you working around the others. :)

>Someone suggested marrying the costume party to the pity party.
>Perhaps we could marry the dinner theatre show to the last
>night dinner. If they are successful, we could move them to a
>separate night in 2010.

What we really need at our larger gatherings, particularly the
designated maximum-attendance things at the beginning and the
end of DLV week is what Cat used to refer to as Quality Social
Time<tm>. :)

This is where the group can mingle, get caught up, meet others,
etc. with few distractions. Activities which have this Quality
Social Time are cited as most-liked for DLV and also for other
TG events.

>From your description of the Murder Mystery, it has a maximum
of 25 participants. Combining this with a maximum-attendance
thing means that up to 25 get left out of the mingling process
or the MM is used as entertainment for the others. If there is
to be entertainment at the max-attendance things, it needs to
be incidental and such that it does not interfere with the
socializing.

>I attended the golf tournament for the first time this year. I
>had one friend with me and didn't know the other two people
>before that day. I thoroughly enjoyed their company and had a
>great day.

This is a good example of getting to know others and enjoying
their company. We do need to encourage the mixing of those
who already know each other, and those who do not. Circles of
friendship can expand significantly when this occurs.

>I'm not a big fan of prepayment. But our community must fulfill
>its obligations if we are to continue to progress.

I don't think we have anybody who is a fan of prepayment, but
sometimes it's a necessary evil, in that it prevents the taking
of a serious financial bath.

My personal experience with it has been poor. The response rate
is typically low and late, and I just didn't do it for the years
when I did ticketing for the Limo Tour.

Administrative Committee nominations:

The floor is now open for nominations for the two at-large members
of the Administrative Committee as outlined in the implementation
section of the recently-passed motion.

+Following the carrying of this motion, an election will be held
+for the two at large positions, one to expire in the next calendar
+year from the year elected, and one to expire in the second calendar
+year from the year elected. The person who receives the highest
+number of votes will assume the two-year term and the person who
+receives the second highest number of votes will assume the
+one-year term.

To nominate (or second) an individual, just reply to this mailing
and name the victcandidate of your choice. :) A duplicate
nomination will be taken as a second. Please note that those who
hold the named administrative positions are ineligible for
nomination. (Currently Annie, Ginger, Nora.)

Self-nomination is permitted.

As stated above, there will be one vote for two positions, with
the candidate getting the highest number of votes filling the
term to expire in 2010 and the candidate getting the second
highest number of votes filling the position to expire in 2009.

Starting the schedule:

We haven't seeded the schedule for 2009 yet. I do want to get some
discussion going first, and I do think it's a Good Thing to mix
up our recurring activities to get rid of any "if I'm in a limo,
this must be Thursday" feelings. :)

We need to avoid thoughts like "we need Bellagio on Wednesday
because we've always done it on Wednesday" this year!

I'm thinking first in terms of the larger evening "anchor"
activities, which are those that, by their nature, require
others to be planned around them.

We can now assume that unless there's a significant objection,
we'll be having a Sunday thru Friday timeframe.

Let's look at a hypothetical slate of the evenings:

Sunday: Welcome Celebration

Monday: Eating Out Night, multi-track activities

Tuesday: Big show, Pity Party, Limo Tour

Wednesday: Night Of The Soiled Doves, alternate local activities.

Thursday: Larger multi-track dining and activities.

Friday: Big bash of some kind.
. . .

I'm not married to this schedule, but I don't want to see it
morph to any one-to-one copy of what we had in 2007 and 2008,
either a weeknight-to-weeknight thing, or simply offset by
one day.

I've named several of our larger recurring activities on this
starting schedule as place-holders. There's nothing that says
these have to happen these days, or at all if that's what the
group decides.

I think we need two max-turnout evening gatherings, one toward
the first of the week, one toward the end.

I also think we need to designate two of the evenings for
multi-tracking, with none of our usual "big guns" on those
nights.

These can be used for both some of our more popular smaller
things (bar crawl, Fremont Street, smaller show groups) and
some of our new things.

The Murder Mystery, for example, would fit nicely on Monday or
Thursday on this schedule, possibly Wednesday, but this would
put it against NSD, which probably is not good to try.

Costume Party, if it's to be a stand-alone affair, would work
nicely on Thursday of this example schedule.

There may be a few things that have to occur on a certain night
of the week. Rock Star Karaoke, for example, only happens on
Monday, IIRC.
. . .

We're starting to see a few of our recurring daytime activities
get popular too, and I would suggest that we do not schedule any
two of the following, should they recur in 2009, on the same day:

* Lake Mead Boat Tour
* Diva Las Vegas Invitational Golf
* Art Tour
* English High Tea
* SBS Social

We have six afternoons total, five of them on weekdays, so I don't
envision any problems avoiding conflicts here.

I think the SBS Social has the potential to grow into more of a
maximum-attendance daytime thing, or as close to it as we can get.
We saw this as a possibility back in the "Garden Party" days too.

The commercial activities, open houses, can be placed in daytime
slots as requested (FCFS) by the vendors. I don't want to see any
two of these against each other, however, and I'm sure the vendors
don't want to see this either. As we're starting to see, we're now
large enough that the businesses will work around us, instead of
us working around them! :)

Daily lunch. I think this worked well last year with different
venues and different hostesses. What I would like to see this
coming year, however, is consistency in the posted time of the
lunch, some consistency in the process, and attention paid (and
this is everyone's job, not just that of the hostess) to be sure
we don't have some who are indeed on time in the right place and
somehow get left out.

MCC, obviously, has to go on Sunday.

Comments, gang?
