Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Pins, bars, etc.:

Several bar-club related items this mailing, one which looks very
promising. See note below.

Speaking of bars, has anybody on this list personally visited the
Rainbow Lounge (old Cobalt) yet? Reason I'm asking is that I received
a rather scorching negative report on it and I would be interested if
anybody had any other opinions on it.
. . .

More pin feedback is requested. Please see below.

Some comments about golf. Yes, at this time it appears that the evening
schedule on Wednesday will be less intense than that on Thursday, so
Thursday might be the way to go for the least night-before problems.

Close to last call on Pinkfest in Chicago next week.

Zingers Club:

Some very exciting news regarding a new club opening, Zingers, which has
some definite possibilities for us ...

Monica writes:

I'm sure the group will join me in congratulations, and wishes for a
long and successful endeavor! :)

The question I have, really directed toward Monica but input from all
would be appropriate, would this club be available for a "Maximum
Turnout Get-together" on Wednesday evening of DLV week?

Wow {wheels turning and dreaming here}, it would be super if we could
pull off something like a Cagle show at Zingers on Wednesday, that would
be a ticket toward a full house and then some! :)

But yes, I think this is an excellent possibility both for one or more
of our bar type activities plus after-hours and incidental drop-in
business all week long.

Pin proofs:

The first proof that was submitted back to us by the pin company was
very attractive, but differed a bit from what we had given them.

We would like everybody to please take a look at these proof images:

These are the pin company's proof and some variations on the theme. Some
of these do have some artifact (imperfections) which will be removed
from the final proof.

Please let us know what you think, as the trigger is about to be pulled
on this project.

Final Night Wrapup and Mainstream bars:

Tootsye writes:

>Now that Michael Cagle seems to be establised in a room, what about we
>all go to his show for the final night? He has always been a big hit
>with our group and I think it appropriate that he could be the big
>ending!

Yes, we could get a group together to go where Michael happens to be
performing during DLV, which may or may not really work out with our
other plans.

Michael Cagle is currently over at the Starlite Lounge at the Stardust
on Fridays, so they tell me. He may or may not still be off and on at
the Bootlegger on Mondays as well. That's the way it is now, October,
and shows and performers change around, as we know quite well.

Starlite Lounge is right in the middle of the Stardust main casino and I
really think many of our people would shy away from it. Bootlegger is
smaller, kind of on your right as you go into the south entrance of the
(old) Belz mall.

However, I really think it's much too early to make any kinds of
definite Cagle plans for next year at this time. Performers tend to move
around, and showrooms, especially the smaller lounges, will often rotate
their lineups.

I'm going to try to get into LV next month for another event, and if I
can swing it I'll go over to the Stardust that Friday and see his show
and see if I can get a word with him before or after.

>Maybe if we have a big enough group. he would do a special show for us,
>or at least dedicate the show to us!

Something like that is what I would like to see more than just going to
where he happens to be. In the past he's been willing to perform for us
for a bucket of warm fuzzies and a daiquiri glass full of $$$.

I'm kinda hoping that one of the newer places (such as Zingers) will be
appropriate to host such a show, kinda like Keys was in 2001 and Sasha's
was in 2002 and 2003.

I just hope we can get Michael this coming year. He's on the way up,
so it's very possible that the demand for Michael may soon exceed the
supply of Michael. :)
. . . . .

>As far as mainstream bars go, I would still like to check out Charlies
>Bar at the Bellagio! I never did get too it last year! <g>

Ok, I'll put the Charles Bar on the list for the traditional after the
limo tour. We can confirm the presence of Charles at that time as we
approach DLV 2005.

This is a very good mainstream bar activity. It's very out in the open,
but at that time of night it's not too crowded in the casino there.

We'll also be more explicit this coming year WRT where exactly the
Charles Bar is, how to get to it from the casino main entrance, etc.

Question here, by "find some places", do you mean that we should be
seriously looking for places other than Goodtimes and Flex for such
things as the WC and AM?

Hmmmm ... Local people? Is that little get-together at the Tropicana
still going on? If not, why did it stop? Any issues with the venue?

Anyway ...

Let's take the Tropicana bar as an example here, and let's imagine doing
the Welcome Celebration in that casino bar.

Although the bar itself is somewhat secluded, the trip thru the casino
would scare (away) a good portion of our newcomers, and, not to name
names, but I can see a few of our returnees and volunteers being
intimidated by the trek to the bar. These are people who have come a
long way in the past few years, but still get very nervous in wide-open
situations.

Then there's the restroom situation. With 10 or so, flying under the
radar is possible, particularly for those who are familiar with what to
do and what not to do. With 50-70 or more, the group is gonna get
noticed. There's also the anxiety factor of those who are new to using
public restrooms.

>I know there are others that have issues with the bars as well and for
>there reasons would probably prefer to be quiet simply 'cause they
>can't provide a solution. I admit that I don't have any immediate
>solutions.

I do admit that I've been approaching this with the idea in mind that it
is up to those who see it as a priority to deal with it and to find
solutions.

Let's open the floor now for those who see it as an issue, but don't
have solutions to speak up. Please do so. I would like to hear from
those who want to go more mainstream/upscale, but don't have any idea of
where.

Comments? Discussion?

I think it should be our goal (for the Welcome Celebration and Annual
Mixer and such) to have optimum turnout, translated: minimum fallout,
meaning to go for a minimum of those who are in Las Vegas but for some
reason or another choose to skip it.

It's (still) my impression that a place like Flex or Goodtimes will
result in less fallout (therefore greater turnout) for such an affair
than would some place such as the Tropicana or the San Remo casino bar.

If anybody disagrees with this last sentence, please say so, I would
like to hear your reasoning.

The one idea I'm still having trouble fully understanding is the
perception that places like Goodtimes/Flex are perceived as closets.

It seems to be that the primary difference between Goodtimes and a
casino bar is conspicuous visibility to hundreds/thousands of people.

The only difference between Goodtimes and a place such as PT's is that
Goodtimes is known to be friendly to the t* community. Both are equally
nonvisible to the Teeming Millions in Las Vegas.

Is it the visibility that's desired here? Help me understand this,
please. What really is desired that exists at the casino bars but
does not at a place like Goodtimes?

Remember that I'm one who's admittedly cynical of the shuttered hotel
conference room, commonplace in the mainline t* conventions, so the
concept of a communal closet is not really foreign to me.

Is this going to be your choice for your Eating Out Night location, or
do you want to propose this for some kind of other gathering, or just as
a general suggestion for the group?
