This issue is being sent out early due to the volume of material that
has come in. Everything received on ORG by Saturday morning should
appear here. Material received after about 10:00am Saturday will
appear in the next mailing.
I've seeded the DLV 2005 activity database with the activities mentioned
recently. You can always check the latest state of this on the web at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/org05arc/acts.html
You will notice that everything is now in the "proposed" category. When
we get a timeframe decided upon we can then start assigning timeslots to
activities and fitting them in.
Please look this over, and if anything you volunteered for is not there,
or if you want to add something, please say so.
. . . . .
As some of you know, we received a few spam complaints last week, and it
was very obvious the entire DLV 2004 e-mail directory was spammed. The
person responsible was sent a polite but very firm note stating that it
was a no-no to do so {slap!}. We're probably the least of her worries,
since one of the spam complaints was also cc'd to two other abuse
departments.
Ironically, even though I was sent the spam, I didn't see it until the
first complaint came in, since the spam traps here did their job and
kept it out of sight.

Sacramento next year with it that early. :)
>When is the Laughlin Motorcycle Run in 2005?
According to Laughlin Chamber Of Commerce, April 20-24, adjacent to
our proposed dates.
>Is there any super-major convention during either of those time periods

>early?
Biggest one in April is the NAB convention, April 18-22.
Networld+Interop, May 1-6 of course, but it's not as large as it was
pre-911 (yet) and recently has negligible effect on room rates except at
the LV Hilton. Next year it's gonna be down at the Mandalay Bay, so the
LV Hilton will probably not be affected by it.
>There used to be a convention calendar site, but I can't find it now.

Laughlin River Run affects only one of our people. Julie, how bad is
it for you if DLV starts on Sunday, April 24?
In 2003 we started the day after Easter, with some pre-pre-DLV things
going on Easter with no bitching. Only major complaints have been about
Mothers Day, which we are now forbidden to touch or even come close to.
In years gone by, the major conventions would give the hotels an excuse
to raise room rates, with Comdex (fall) being the worst. Post 9-11, even
Comdex has not brought out enough of a crowd to affect rates all over
the city anymore. Larger events at the LVCC will cause rates at the
Sahara (and LV Hilton and Riviera) to rise.

Yes, I agree, it was a non-climax of an ending.

Isn't that what DLV, and Las Vegas in general is for? You know, to do

I do tend to agree that we need to close on an uptick, or at least with
something of equal significance to the prime evening activities of the
week.
The San Remo/Flex ending was something I thought up on the fly as a
last resort. Up until a week or so before, I was still confident that
Cagle was gonna find a showroom.
I was really hoping that somebody, like one of you, would say "eeewww,
that sucks, let's do ... instead" but that never happened.

This week seems to be a good choice for all, only down side is that it
abuts the Laughlin River Run as stated above. We need to hear what the

My big question here is: Will this increase overall enthusiasm for
golf (and DLV in general) or will the two golf activities dilute each
other? A related question: Will this result in a calling to "go easy"
on evening activities prior to both golf activities?
Another very important question: Do we have the volunteer commitment
to coordinate two golf activities to the adequate degree of quality?

We've had good results with the Area 51 and the Rhyolite trip. I see
this as being just slightly longer time and mileage wise. We won't be
able to cover nearly all of it, just the southern end, but we can hit
things like Badwater, the Artist Drive, and Zabriskie Point. If we went
up as far as Scotty's Castle and that big crater thing we would probably
not get back until well after dinner time.

Even though I don't forsee a mass dogpile on the nun bandwagon this
coming year, some kind of a general costume thing would cover the nun
outfit as well as just about anything else.

to one of our bar type activities.

Yes, there appears to be a demand for (at least) one activity that gets
together as many of our people as possible at one place at one time.
Personally, I think that getting a maximum contingent of DLV'ers all
together would be a Good Thing<tm>.

Ok, I've got this on the list, calling it "Ballroom Activity" for now
with you as the coordinator.
I do see something like this as a possibility for a maximum-turnout
activities. I also see, however, two double-edged swords hanging
above it.
First sword ... the keyword you used above was "rent", and that usually
implies money. :)
I'm sure you know that we don't have any means of funding such a thing
except for a charge from those who are attending. I'm sure you've also
seen the opinions on mandatory prepayment.
>From experience dealing with the DLV crowd, a prepayment hoop-jump often
translates into lower turnout.
If it's pay at the door, there's the risk of a financial bath.
Now for the second sword ...
If the turnout is to be maximal, the venue has to be such that those who
are just coming out will be comfortable, while also not giving
claustrophobia to those who have been out a while.
It appears that you may have a double balancing act to perform here. :)
>I love the ideas that are cropping up and eagerly anticipate DLV 2005!
Oh yes! I think we're getting some very good ideas, lots of variety and
lots of enthusiasm toward DLV 2005 already.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

If there is a desire (and there appears to be so) for new bar type
venues, it's up to those who want to see it happen to make it happen.
Yes, the local people do have an advantage here, but with the model
under which we're organized we can't just say "turn to" and expect them
to go do it. :) Whoever does it, whether it's one person or a whole
group, will have to take the initiative to do so.
>Also I like the last week in April idea or even the first week in April

It seems like there's a lot of support for the last week in April. We
still have the better part of two months to decide, so please keep the
thoughts and feelings WRT timeframe coming in.

Personally, I think that was one of the best-organized limo tours that
we've had. I think you did a very good job, especially with visiting all
