Activities:
This mailing deals with activities only, and is really intended to be a
conversation starter about what things we want to do for DLV 2005.
Please look over the various activity suggestions and discussion items
in this mailing. See if there are any you particularly like and would
want to take on as the organizer of that activity.
If you want to do something else that is not in this mailing, please
write in and say so.
Other items that have come in will appear in the next regular ORG
mailing this coming Wednesday.

What worked, what didn't:
Here's my opinions of what worked, what did not, what we should vow to
repeat, and what we should ash-can ...
The floor is open for comments and discussion on this year's activities,
with respect to forward-looking observations. Please feel free to let
your thoughts and feelings be known.
. . . . .
+ 9:45am Metro Comm Church service (MCC - SV)
Worked. Should definitely be repeated, assuming we span a Sunday next
year, which I'm sure will happen.
+ 5:30pm Pre-DLV Happy Hour (Freezone - SV)
Worked. Not as highly rated as the other bar activities, but I did not
see anything wrong.
I think it's fair to say that happy hours, in general, work. We
discussed back prior to 2003 a scheme for having a daily happy hour in
one fixed location, but I think it works better doing them in various
facilities, hopefully one close to where the next major activity will be
taking place.
+ 6:30pm Pre-DLV dinner (Milano's - MV)
Worked. Next year we do need to let them know in advance that we will be
invading.
+ 8:00pm Pre-DLV get-together (Spotlight lounge - SV)
Worked. Some complaints about the place. It's not my favorite, but I
don't really see anything wrong with it.
+ 10:00am Trip to Rhyolite (Rhyolite - MS)
Worked. I'm planning to sponsor a similar trip to Death Valley next DLV.
+ 1:00pm Lunch with or without Ginger (Sahara buffet - MS)
Again this year, worked. I admit it ain't the Bellagio buffet, but I
don't envision any place that will please everybody.
+ 7:00pm Dinner (Hamburger Mary's - MV)
Worked. This is one that I did not have good luck at, but it was not
really their fault.
+ 8:30pm Welcome Celebration (Flex - SV)
Worked. Good crowd, many stayed for Karaoke. Unfortunately Flex has
decreased its floor space. :(
IMAO, we need to have one large strictly social get-together toward the
beginning of DLV, the purpose of which is just to socialize and to get
to know each other, etc.
+ 10:30am Thrift Shop Tour (Various - MS)
Worked, from what I hear. I was not there.
+ 10:30am Boat cruise (Lake Mead - MS)
Ditto, very good reports.
+ 1:00pm Bowling (Sams Town - MS)
Did not work. No-show problem. I'm not saying this should not be tried
again, just that this year it did not work out. It may be the case that
there were too many conflicting other things.
+ 6:00pm NSD local Happy Hour and post-cathouse thing
This is the only thing on this list that I would categorize as a total
flop! It was a mistake to use this place. Like totally 144 to the max,
school's out ya know, fer-shure. :(
My preference is to avoid this place for anything that appears on our
schedule unless it makes a marked turn in the positive direction.
+ 6:00pm Night of the Soiled Doves (Side trip)
Definitely worked. The killer activity of DLV 2004! Need I say more?
+ 11:00am Star Trek Experience (LV Hilton)
+ 12:30pm Lunch (Quark's Bar, LV Hilton)
>From what I heard, worked. That was about the time I was coming back to
life, and retrieving my vehicle from the San Remo. :)
+ 2:00pm Shopping expedition (LV Premium Outlets - MS)
Didn't hear too much on this, from what I heard, small crowd, but
definitely worked.
+ 6:00pm Happy Hour (Hard Rock Cafe - MV)
+ 7:00pm Hard Rock Dinner (Hard Rock Cafe - MV)
+ Ev Secretaries Night (HRC - MV)
Worked. I had a very good time and I enjoyed the food. Drinks seemed to
be a bit on the spendy side, though. I don't remember seeing too much
of the secretary theme, however.
+ 10:00pm Karaoke (Goodtimes - SV)
Worked. This will almost always be a special-interest activity, but
those who are not into performing can listen, drink, and socialize.
+ 9:00am Golf (Desert Rose - MS)
Worked. Again a special-interest thing, but very popular. There's even
a suggestion to do this twice. #include <standard-answer.h>
+ 10:00am Art tour (TBD - MS)
>From what I heard, worked. Again, special interest.
+ 1:00pm SO's Luncheon (Crown And Anchor)
I wasn't there. (Obviously {duh}) From what I heard, the turnout was
suboptimal. My hunch is that part of this was due to the fact that it
was not finalized in time to make the activity sign-up thing.
We apparently had one SO thing a couple years ago which was very well
attended, but most of them have not been.
I think we need to encourage SO activities, but they do need to be
planned in time to adequately schedule and promote them.
Also, IMAO, any SO activities we have should be all-inclusive of such
things as male SO's and other nontraditional SO's.
Comments?
+ 1:00pm Glamour Boutique Open House (Glamour Boutique - SV)
Worked, I guess. I think. Can anybody confirm?
The past 2 years when I went there to the GB Open House, it was wall to
wall people, standing room only and barely room to stand.
This year I went there expecting same. Nope. Looked just like any other
day. There were people there, but no big crowd. They said that there
were larger crowds in the 2 days before.
However, there were quite a few responses to this one on the survey, so
I must have missed the crowd.
Comments?
+ 7:00pm Ovation, The Show (Aladdin, Desert Passage - MS)
Definitely worked, but some were not sure even at show time if it was
Ovation that worked or "V" that worked. :)
I'm just glad I wasn't in charge of this one. Aiko really did a great
job on it, but I dunno how she kept her sanity. :)
+ 8:00pm Big Show Pity Party (Mindy's residence - SV(s))
>From what I heard this worked. I wasn't there, but those I talked to
said they had a good time.
+ 8:50pm Limo Tour (Aladdin - MS)
Definitely worked. This is one of my personal faves. :)
+ 2:00am Charles Bar get-together (Bellagio - MS)
Worked. Some confusion as to what the "Charles Bar" was and where it
was. One lesson learned is that we need to refer to the venues by their
proper names.
+ 12:00n Bellagio Lunch (Bellagio Buffet - MS)
Small crowd, but I heard it worked. Must have, it aced the evaluation.
+ 2:00pm Bad Attitude Corset Workshop (Bad Attitude Boutique)
>From what I heard it worked.
+ 2:00pm English High Tea (Cobblestone Tea Room - MS)
And again ... I heard it worked, but there were some delays. NBD.
+ 5:00pm Happy Hour (Carluccio's - MV)
+ 6:00pm Carluccio's Dinner (Carluccio's Tivoli Gardens - MV)
This one was a winner. Very enjoyable, good food. Highly rated.
+ 7:30pm Annual Mixer (Goodtimes - SV)
Again, worked. They said they would have the new dance floor open, but
I guess it was not to be. We had to pose for the group photos outside,
which was somewhat of a mess, but ...
Again, IMAO, we do need some kind of large social gathering on one of
the peak-attendance days in a facility that is comfortable to all.
The topic of a "theme" for something like this is open for discussion.
The group photo thing is getting messy. I had hoped for the new dance
floor to be open, so we could have used it, but we ended up doing this
outside. Comments?
+ 11:00pm Dance Night (Gipsy, et. al - SV)
>From what I heard, this was one of the best attended and most
enthusiastic of these that we've ever seen. I think the key is to have a
plan and stick to it. Nobody got lost, nobody wondered where the group
really was.
+ 9:30am Claude Hall Gun Show (Cashman Field - MS)
Not my thing, but reports indicated that it worked.
(Bang bang shoo-oot shoot.)
+ 11:00am Garden Party (Mindy's residence - SV)
Yep, definitely worked.
Too bad Mindy and Diane will most likely be moving before next DLV. :(
A house party such as this is one thing that sets DLV off from the
conventions, and it's part of the real-world experience that our group
enjoys. The atmosphere of this activity is most certainly comfortable to
99.99% of our people. It also answers the calling for daytime activities
where it's ok to dress up a bit.
+ 6:00pm Happy Hour (San Remo Casino (Showroom) Bar - MS)
+ 7:00pm Dinner (San Remo buffet/coffee shop - MS)
+ 8:30pm Farewell Get-Together (Flex - SV)
These worked, but were a last-minute fill-in for the defunct Cagle show.
Crowd at Flex was definitely not that large, but was rated highly.
Ok, gang, let's hear some chatter. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Volunteers and activities on record:
Here's a synopsis of what I have on record as of this time of people
volunteering for various activities ...
Due to the many conversations and the notes appearing here and there in
other messages, it's quite possible that you volunteered for something
but do not appear here. If this is the case, please write in and
re-state what you would like to do.
Within the next week or so I'll get the activity database started and
seeded with these as well as some of our regular recurring activities.
Everything will be in the "proposed" category until we get a timeframe
in which to schedule them.
. . . . .
Gina:
+Opportunities for next year:
+We will have a 4x4 trip in the Hummer and any other vehicles that the
+girls can muster up, and in either a DLV sanctioned or not, a shooting
+expedition to a local range. I'll be in charge of those two items,
+along with Charles Bar and anything else that we need help on.
Not what's typical for a t* gathering at all, but ... :) I've made
a few comments on a similar item below.
. . . . .
Diane (AZ):
+I'll coordinate or co-coordinate the church service, roommmate process
+and boat cruise again next year.
+As I told you the other night, you can sign me up again for
+coordinating the following
+ Roomate
+ Church
+ Boat Cruise and
+ Shopping Tour
. . . . .
Michelle (NZ):
+I may raise my hand and host some upmarket eating adventures.
+Later this year I will make some suggestions for alternative eating
+places, and despite my DNV policy I may raise my hand and host some
+upmarket eating adventures. (For those that don't know, DNV = Does Not
+Volunteer)
We do have witnesses to this! :)
. . . . .
Aiko is on record volunteering to coordinate something of a Night Of
The Soiled Doves II activity, perhaps including a barbeque up at the
CR. From Aiko's notes, we would need at least 50 to make this happen,
which should not be a problem.
+I had so much fun with NSD04 that I'd like to volunteer to put together
+NSDII for DLV2005.
. . . . .
Mindy is on record to coordinate Golf, High Tea, and something along
the line of a Garden Party, although it will be at their new location
next year.
. . . . .
I (Annie) will coordinate a driving tour of the lower portion of Death
Valley. This will take most of the day, and I would like to schedule
this for the first weekday of DLV 2005.
. . . . .
Nora:
+Just to make sure I want to go on record as Volunteering - First as
+the big sister coordinator also for coordinating a dinner event and in
+any way I can be of help.
. . . . .
Sarah:
+I'd love to do the Art Tour again next year.
I'm sure there will be more than enough demand to see this one repeated.
I think the door is wide open for this and many other possible special
interest daytime activities. We always seem to get a good turnout at
evening things, but most daytime things have never attracted a very
large crowd. The answer might be to have more of the smaller ones that
don't appeal to all.
+Also there was a suggestion that we do a "4 wheel drive" off-road side
+trip, renting a Humvee, etc. While I'm not interested in renting when I
+have a Jeep already, I'd love to do this trip as well. Sign me up!
To make a long story long ... I'm not the ourdoorsy type at all, but on
one business trip to Las Vegas the rental agency was short on vehicles
and the guy at the lot just said to "take the next one that comes out of
the car wash" so I did. It was a Suzuki Grand {mumble} 4 wheel drive
jeep type thing. I just said what the heck with it and grabbed it. Some
of you may have seen me driving it to Sasha's and Flex that trip.
The next morning (this was an off-hours overnight work thing) some of
the cow-orkers and I had a great time exploring the "Wetlands" area
which is kinda behind Sam Boyd Stadium and extends over in the general
direction of Lake Mead. This is the first time I ever recall seeing
desert wetlands, and we drove all over the almost-roads and non-roads
and eventually came out over by Lake Las Vegas. We could have NEVER done
that in a regular car.
I think something like a trip thru boonies like this would be a lot of
fun for DLV.
Now, and this is one thing we do need to pay attention to if our people
go renting 4wd vehicles, one of the others at the office, after hearing
what we did, informed me that even though I rented a 4wd vehicle, I was
most certainly in violation of the rental agreement by taking it off of
the real roads.
Well, I then did something I don't think I ever did, and that was I
actually read the rental agreement that I had signed. I believe the term
they used was "hard surfaced roads" but it definitely stated that the
vehicle was not to be used off road. The way I read it, it was actually
a violation for me to drive up that dirt road up to the old cement plant
by Carrara this last spring.
Anyway, for those renting 4wd drive vehicles, they should probably at
least be aware of this.
I don't really care about going shooting, but I might consider doing it
just for the heck of it. :)
. . . . .
Densie:
+I would like to propose indoor skydiving again for 2005, and to put air
+tours back on the schedule for one day only (not the day after the limo
+tour).
Hmmmm ... is indoor skydiving gonna be the new Rhyolite? :) :) :)
. . . . .
Diane (AZ):
Group Dance lesson ...
+Got feedback from AthurMurray. See Below. I'll organize it if the
+org group thinks it is good and if it will fly....
+>>I'm part of a group of about 110 people that visit Las Vegas once
+>>a year. 2005 will be our nineth year. We just concluded this
+>>year's vist on the 9th of May. We usually have it somethime
+>>during the month of May. I'm on the organizing group that is
+>>looking for new events to add to our week's stay.
+>>Would it be possible for the group to get a lesson (for about 30)?
+>>If so what days and times do each of your two two locations offer
+>>this service ?
+>What a fun group it must be! And, yes, we would be happy to arrange a
+>private group class for your members. Our usual rate is $15 per
+>person (min. of 8 people). We can teach you any dance you would like
+>from Swing to Salsa and since it would be a private group, you would
+>be able to schedule it at a time that would be convenient for you.
+>Keep us in mind for your next trip.

Comments, gang? Is this something that would be of interest?

Survey activity suggestions:
These are the definitive activity suggestions from the verbal survey
comments.
I don't think any of these have been discussed in depth.
Please feel free to discuss, or, if any of these are just absolutely
screaming "do me" at you, please state that you want to coordinate such
an activity.
. . . . . . . . . .
+A nightime walking tour of the strip may be
+worth looking into. This could be done with small groups.
In 1999, 2000, and 2001 I coordinated a daytime walking/driving tour of
the Strip. In 1999 we did the Trop/Strip area and the Harrah's/IP area.
In 2000 we did the Mirage/TI/FS Mall/Frontier/Stardust corridor followed
by din-din at the Palace Station buffet.
We had a fairly good turnout both in 1999 and 2000.
In 2001 we tried it again, concentrating on the Ballys/Paris/Aladdin
area, but this one was not that well attended at all.
I haven't pushed anything like that since.
However, a similar thing at night might work. Only one way to find
out for sure.
. . . . .
+I would like to see perhaps another round of golf at a different course
+(2 days, 2 courses)
Golfers?
Is there enough demand for two golf sessions?
+and a ballroom dance venue for the DLV'ers
Anybody wanna take this ball(room) and run with it? :)
. . . . .
+I think that possibly having an Evening of Dinner, Street Dancing, and
+shopping on Fremont Street would be fun and low cost. An evening or day
+trip to the Rio to see the Mardi Gras in the sky show would be fun as
+well.
Uh, is there street dancing on FSE on a regular basis? I don't remember
it, although I haven't been there much lately. Shopping on Fremont St???
. . . . .
+perhaps dinner at Benihana Village at the LV Hilton....
Yes, and all it takes to make it happen is ...
. . . . .
+How about miniature golf
Yes, and all it takes to make it happen is ...
. . . . .
+Can we have one or more nonsmoking events, please. The level of smoke
+in some places was awful. Also, can you mention to please be
+considerate and go outside if you must smoke! Thanks.
Jeez, I dunno how to answer this. A "nonsmoking party" ???????????? :)
. . . . .
+How about a costume party!
Yes, and all it takes to make it happen is ...
But seriously, we've had suggestions over and over for various
costume/theme affairs, but it seems like few of them ever got off the
ground. I guess the best we ever had of these was the proposal for "Slut
Night" being manifested in the Night Of The Soiled Doves.
* Red Shoe night (happened)
* Blonde Hair night (happened)
* Slut night (happened)
* Secretaries night (kinda happened)
* Retro night
* Ethnic them night
* Prom night
* Nunfest :)
* Hawaiian night
At times I've suggested that instead of a narrowly-defined specialty
theme night, just do a general costume party. Nobody has ever seemed
to be too terribly excited about it, however.
Comments? Volunteers?
. . . . .
+I like to have one bid [sic] event that we all can get dressed up (like
+a ball) and meet as many of the girls at one time. I can see that would
+be hard with girls coming and going home every day
. . . . .
+For those who are there only for a few days, it is nice to have a
+"mixer" opportunity maybe every other day. No signup required at a
+comfortable location. That way we get a chance to visit with the
+larger group.
. . . . .
+Would like at least one venue that gathers all
+of the gals in one location for a banquite or somthing. With events all
+spread out only met one third of the contingent.
. . . . .
These are three comments that have a common theme of a large gathering
with maximum exposure to the others attending.
As you know, we'll never get everybody. Taking a trip to the real world,
if this is to happen, it will have to be in a place that's comfortable
to the newly-out. It also has to be someplace that those who are
avowedly sooooooo mainstream will not have to stoop to enter.
The theme will have to be such that it appeals to a very wide audience.
I do think there is merit in planning some activities that encourage
maximum turnout.
Comments, on this or any of the suggestions here?
