This is the DLV 2004 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

This mailing:

This mailing is somewhat long, and consists only of various activity
items coming in on the survey, the Call For Volunteers, etc.

There are some non-activity items in the queue and those will come out in
the next regular mailing next Wednesday.

Activity planning:

First of all, I would like to ask everybody to please bookmark this
link:

http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/org04arc/acts.html

This is our ongoing database of proposed and scheduled activities. I've
seeded it with the suggestions that came in on the survey (see below)
plus all the serious ones (and some not-so-serious ones) that I've
heard or received in e-mail.

You can pull this up anytime from your browser and it will always show
the latest state of our activites and schedule.

The activities which have been scheduled, meaning they have particular
day/time timeslots, will appear first, and those which have been proposed
but not scheduled will appear in the second part in the reverse order
in which they were suggested.

You will notice that at this time, all of them appear on the second
part. When we get our DLV days on the calendar nailed down, then we
can start moving them up to the scheduled part and adjusting them
as needed.

For those who volunteered to take on something specific, I've put down
the volunteer coordinators names, with the exception of the Limo Tour
which has many volunteers and all may or may not be needed.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Some activity notes:

I'm putting the side trip to Rhyolite on the proposed list. This *WILL*
happen this next year, even if it's me and Densie riding rusty bicycles
with Densie carrying the lethal weapon of choice. :) (I will carry That
Damn Camera<tm> and the Peeps.)

I want to do this on the first morning and afternoon. I think it will
work best if we get people for this while they're fresh and not all
overloaded or burned out.

The side trip to Area 51 worked well, and this could be something very
similar.

For those who don't know the history here, this will be the 4th time
this is scheduled. It never really happened due to such thing as lack
of interest at the time, lack of energy, minor injuries, etc.

Rhyolite is a true "ghost town" north of Las Vegas near the California
state line. It's not a cheesy re-creation. No staged gunfights, etc.
There is some restoration work going on, but it's mostly untouched. The
population went from 10,000 or so in its heyday during the early 1900's
to zero now, except for a part-time caretaker.
. . . . .

"V" The Ultimate Variety Show. If the group here wants, I'll look into
getting us a deal on this show which is playing at the Venetian. This
is produced by David Saxe Productions. They also produce Showgirls Of
Magic and their sales director said they would make us a good deal on
group rates for "V" if we are interested.

I can see this working either as a primary show on Saturday, or a
non-primary show on a weekday evening, depending on what somebody
else wants to schedule.
. . . . .

I'm also volunteering to do one smaller side trip, such as Red Rock
Canyon, Valley Of Fire, or a drive around Lake Mead.
. . . . .

Now for some of our old favorites. I'm putting the Annual Mixer in
there for the DLV Friday at Goodtimes. This is the only activity that
has happened each DLV.

Carluccio's worked so well along with it this past year that I'm just
gonna pencil it in. I'm hoping Leah will adopt this one this year as
well. (Please?) :)
. . . . .

Welcome Celebration. I'm assuming we will have some kind of a strictly
social kick-off gathering in a place everybody can feel comfortable.
I'm penciling in both Flex and Spotlight for this, since we don't
know what day of the week it will be, and one of them may have some
special event on the day we start.

I'm also holding off on a farewell gathering until we consider and
vote up or down the big-bang ending on Saturday night.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity suggestions:

These are the activity suggestions that came in on the survey. I've
added a few comments here and there.

Yes, a couple of these are off topic, but I did not move them.

I would like to open the floor up for discussion not only on these
suggestions, but for activity discussion, both general and specific.

Lines with + at the beginning are included text from the comments.
Lines without this are my comments.
. . . . .

+1. More mainstream venues.

Personally, I think we have a very good mix of mainstream and
alternative venues, and the survey numbers seem to agree, but there
are always some who are calling for more mainstream activities.

It all depends on what our organizers (that's US, gang) volunteer to
plan and coordinate. If people volunteer to coordinate more activities
in mainstream venues, then this will happen. We do need to keep in
mind the issues we had in mainstream venues this year.

See some further thoughts and notes on this below.
. . . . .

+2. Would be interested in a major headliner show like Tom Jones, Penn
+& Teller, etc.

Again, all it takes is for somebody to step forward and make this
happen.

Volunteers?
. . . . .

+3. Keeping in mind a few people wore extreme and inappropriate clothing
+at some venues next year why don't we do one or more fetish
+opportunities toward providing an appropriate venue for this and
+emphasizing appropriate attire the rest of the time.

Yes, I think the idea for a "Slut Night" or "Pimp N Ho" party might
work fine. More suggestions and notes below on this topic.

The emphasis of appropriate dress (and behavior) for mainstream venues
will happen. Although those who did not dress and act appropriately are
a small minority, we do need to get the word out that appropriate dress
and behavior is a requirement for our mainstream activities. We await
the reports from our ad-hoc committee in regard to this.
. . . . .

+4. Let's try The Hard rock Cafe for supper next time out.

Agreed. I would like to find a way to work this into the schedule next
year.
. . . . .

+5. 10 - 20 Seat Limo tour instead of the six seat cars.

This will really be up to those who volunteer to plan the limo tour for
DLV 2004. It appears that there are several who are interested in doing
this, so it's really up to them.

+More use of
+mainstream Casino lounges instead of secluded places: Flex, Goodtimes,
+etc.

See above.

However, I'm very much opposed to eliminating the use of the popular
gathering spots such as Flex and Goodtimes. Why? Because our people
like them. If it ain't broke ...

+Hard Rock Cafe

Again, see above.
. . . . .

+6. I think I am ready to be a big sister. With two DLV's under my wing,
+I think I have established a dressing style the confidence in myself
+that I think I could comfortably guide a little sister who may find
+herself not quite ready to venture out on her own.

This appeared in activity suggestions. As most of you know, we will
have a call for big sister volunteers around the first of the year.
. . . . .

+7. My proposal for the inappropriate and perhaps risque attire that
+apparently caused some embarrassment is to have one or more fetish
+activities where such attire is appropriate. These activities could
+even take place simultaneously with more mainstream activities with the
+warning that inappropriate attire at mainstream activities will be most
+unwelcome.

Yes, see above ... and below.

I don't think we need to necessarily schedule anything else against in.
In fact, I would hate to be the coordinator whose activity has to
compete for people with a Slut Night or Pimp N Ho party. :)
. . . . .

+8. I would suggest much larger limos so the party could be a bit more
+wild.

You mean it's not wild enough in the limos? :)
. . . . .

+9. Have the chosen hotels aware of the DLV convention so they can give
+attendees information contacts for DLV

Comments?
. . . . .

+10. I'll be there!

I will too! :)
. . . . .

+11. You were all wonderful. I left early and went home because I
+couldn't put myself back together. I have learned some very valuable
+lessons and love you for planning such an awesome event. THANK YOU!

I am happy to report that despite a night of hell (actually, after that
night, hell will seem like Club Med by comparison), there appears to be
no permanent damage.

The person who was the primary recipient of the TI restroom incident has
volunteered to assist and is with us now in the ORG group. If she is to
be identified, it will be her choice, but I salute her and award her our
equivalent of the Purple Heart.
. . . . .

+12. Name tags could be smaller but that's not a priority. Color coded
+for and against having one's photo taken would be considerate
+especially in crowded areas.

Smaller? Anyway, this will most likely be up to those who volunteer
to do name tags this year.
. . . . .

+13. I know it's difficult but the late night activities combined with
+the next days early scheduled events make us choose between events. Was
+scheduled for limo ride Wednesday night & 8 O'clock Grand Canyon
+flight. Chose Grand Canyon, It was wonderful!!!

Yes, it's impossible to be two or more places at once, and sometimes
it's difficult to be one place at 4 in the morning and another at 8, but
sometimes choices have to be made.

We need to consider the side effects of planning late night and early
morning activities, but we can't let this alone restrict what our people
want to plan.
. . . . .

+14. Maybe a Casino night.

Yes, and it would not take that much to coordinate it.

Now just try getting people to agree on which one. :) :) :)
. . . . .

+15. Evening SBS costume garden party @ Mindy's, theme: slut fetish,
+lingerie, costume, uniform,

Yes, I think that would be a fun activity.

Now that you've volunteered Mindy's house, we need to let Mindy and
Diane know about it. :) :) :)

+Maybe even have costume contest.

Why not! (Some people take contests at t* events FAR too seriously, but
one that's informal and all in fun would be great.)
. . . . .

+16. Do not let Monuqie do as many events. She was spread way to thin
+and the Limo trip seemed to REALLY upset her when things were not JUST
+right. I admier any volunter and thank them many times over, but she
+needs fewer things to be involved in.

Ok, gang, I dunno who wrote this, but AFAIC, it will be Monique who
decides her own limits. Hopefully she sets these limits within her
energy and comfort levels, but that will be her call.

<bitchmode>
If anybody is to blame for any disorganization on the limo tour, it is
not Monique, but the inconsiderate jer^H^H^H people who signed up for
it and failed to follow through.
</bitchmode>

One thing we need to do is to continue to recognize and thank the people
whose efforts made DLV what it is, even if things don't always work out
in the most ideal manner.

+The liquor for the Limos should
+just be wine and such, it made no since at all this time around. Any
+other booze should be brought by the person that wants it. I vote for
+BIGGER limos next year and not so long a hike at the stops.

Again, these can be considered by those who plan the 2004 limo tour.
. . . . .

+17. a central hotel with a hospitality suite for signups and payments
+would be helpful

Uh ... (HWGA)

No, Densie, you don't smell a rubber chicken baking! :) :) :)
. . . . .

+18. Move it further away from April 15th Tax Day.

Hmmmm ... who was it who said that they paid for the trip with their
tax refund? :)
. . . . .

+19. Dress codes at specific functions need to be better enforced, eg
+High Tea.

Agreed. This will happen.

+better organization on tour. Number Limos and specify someone to lead
+the whole group to the Photo location. I did like the time spent with
+the general public while on the tour.

And yet again, those who volunteer to do the 2004 limo tour can consider
these as well.
. . . . .

+20. Day at the spa being pampered

Hmmmm ... Comments?
. . . . .

+21. (This came in activity suggestions.) It was a great relaxing and
fun vacation which I need to extend beyond three days next year. Liked
the variety of events. Enjoyed all of the Sisters that I met at DIVA. I
feel very forunate to have found DIVA Las Vegas.
. . . . .

+22. Allow more time between events such as the Hamberger Marys Dinner
+and the Show. Not enough time with travel and everything.

I assume this is referring to Thursday evening. IIRC, the HM's thing was
to be an alternative to the show. Maybe we have to make careful notes on
activities that are not intended to be done sequentially.

+I would also
+like to see a more central area where people stay and a singular area
+where we could get a hold of DLV people and meet others.

HWGA. Comments?
. . . . .

+23. being a non-smoker I felt overwhelmed by the number of girls who
+did - it would be nice if some consideration could be given and or
+events for non-smokers to attend. I found myself avoiding some of the
+other girls and I felt badly that some may have formed the opinion I
+was rude - but I'm not going to have my clothes and hair ruined.

I don't know the answer to this one. Smoking appears to be, for some
reason, more prevalent in the t* community than in the general
population. It's been this way for as long as I remember.

I also admit that Las Vegas is not very nonsmoker-friendly. An attempt
at a nonsmoking casino failed miserably, and attempts to have nonsmoking
bars always have met a similar fate.

I have yet to see, however, any of our people who do smoke to be
discourteous about it when nonsmokers are present. We did state that
the limo tour this year was to be totally nonsmoking, even though we
did discuss having segregated cars for those who do and don't.

If it's a priority to anybody in the ORG group to have more activities
where smoking is limited, please feel free to plan them. IIRC the
pajama party a few years back was also designated nonsmoking, am I
correct?

+Otherwise I thought it was very well organized.

+I don't understand that anyone could have complaints about that. I
+thought almost everyone dressed appropriately but there were a few gals
+that made questionable choices.

+I would like to see the group attend the clubs in the casinos, and
+leave the neighborhood gay bars to those who enjoy that environment.

Speaking freely here, and I know this is not what some people want to
hear, but our feedback continues to tell us that the overwhelming
majority of our people do indeed "enjoy" the activities in the
"neighborhood gay bars" and I just can't see us moving such thing
as the Annual Mixer into a casino lounge.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Various activity items:

Diane writes:

I am interested in:

>b. The Parm valley shopping expedition (had a GREAT Time)

We'll put you down to coordinate a shopping trip. A suggestion I might
make is to keep the location open for now. There will be a new outlet
center opening this fall right off Charleston and Grand Central, and
that is closer and will be less repetitive than another Primm trip.

We've found that to get a consistently good turnout year to year,
it helps if there is some variety.

>c. A Picnic lunch / boat cruise down on the lake (wrote about this
>earlier)

Yes, please give us details on your ideas and approximate costs and
such when you can.

>d. Would it be possible to get/find a non denominational church service
>to attend - Preferably one with an open mind. Although I'm about 275
>miles from Vegas, I'd be willing to help setup / sponsor this event.

One project from last year that was dropped from the queue was to make a
list of churches and synagogues (and other religious institutions) that
welcome GLBT people. One of our people had a list, but could not find it
when we put the schedule for DLV together.

If you would like to take on this project, either to create a list or to
lead a group to one of the services, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

I know there is a MCC church in LV and a Unitarian church that welcome
GLBT people, but I don't have any first-hand experience with either.

Some might argue that "non denominational" does not actually exist. :)
. . . . .

Densie writes:

>I will coordinate the Galiano Challenge,

And some people might not think you're serious on this.

>Air Tours (along with Gina),

Ok, we'll get you down for that.

>skydiving,

And again, some may not think you're serious. :)

>and the Nuns at the Del-Mar event (need a catchy name for this one).

We unfortunately have so many volunteers for this activity this year that
you're going to have to wait for next year to do this, I'm afraid.
. . . . .

Ginger writes:

>Specifically,

>there - where else can one get that much fresh citrus fruit ready to
>eat and other fresh salad veggies for any price – no where else in Las

>other temptations!

Ok, Brunch with or without Tina becomes Lunch with or without Ginger for
next year.
. . . . .

Limo Tour:

We've had as number of people volunteer to coordinate the Limo Tour this
coming year. Three appear below, and there are others who have mentioned
they might be interested as well.

I would like to ask that anybody else who is interested in doing this or
helping out with this please write in and say you are interested, and
please use this forum as a clearing house on this activity until it's
decided who will be doing it.
. . . . .

Tootsye writes:

>I have spoken to Jamie Renae and Nora and the three of us would like to
>volunteer to sponsor (if that is the word) The Limo Tour. We have some
>ideas about how to minimize the *no show* problem!

I think many of us would be interested in hearing more about your ideas
of reducing the no-show problem, especially if it can be applied to
other activities as well.

Please let us know what's on your mind in regards to that.
. . . . .

Nora writes:

>Please add my name to the Volunteer list. I would like to assist
>Tootsye and Jamie Renae in next years Limo tour and if I am needed in

. . . . .

Jamie writes:

>Tootsey and I have been talking about setting up and taking care of the
>Limo Tour for 2004. Please add me to your list.
. . . . .

I think it's safe to say that this is the greatest degree of enthusiasm
I've seen throughout the history of DLV for coordinating any one
particular activity.
