This is being sent out mid-week due to the volume of material that has
been received. There are a couple more non-time-sensitive items still
in the queue and those will go out this weekend.

I think that a choice of N items will keep most people happy and
eliminate (most of) the griping that happens at the one-item meals.

I do remember, however, a couple complaints last year at Sasha's that
people could not order from the regular menu unless they sat at the bar.

One place another (non-T) group I belong to occasionally uses has what
they call a "party menu" which has a subset of their regular menu (at
slightly reduced prices) and is given to the people in the private
rooms. The good side of their policy is that they give a slight break to
the groups on the prices, and if somebody does insist, they will let
them order from the regular menu, at regular prices, of course.

Something like this would be ideal, but I can see a restaurant not
wanting to do it.

Cash bar is a cash cow. :)

Prix fixe is handy both for the people and for the restaurant, but I do
think it's best to unbundle drinks from the meal prices. Some people do
not drink, and of those who do drink, some will be happy with beer or a
simple {house brand} and {mix} while others will insist on {ex$pen$ive
call brand} and {mix} or foofoo drinks. Also, some will be quite content
with one glass of white wine while others will want to toss them down.

>At worst we should maybe think about instructing our attendees to be
>prepared to possibly split a bill for the whole table you are seated at
>when out to a group dinner. Shades of little blue-haired old ladies at
>Thursday lunch arguing over who had what, etc.!!

This is a technique that works well with some people but not with
others. We can try suggesting that, but ... I'm sure some tables will
have people who just throw bills into a pile until the ante is reached,
but others will have somebody who pulls out the PDA and computes each
tab to the penny. :)

>Just a thought or two on the subject from <disclaimer> someone who has
>not waited tables but can imagine what it is like for a big group
>demanding separate checks </disclaimer>.

I've never waited tables either, but I've known many who have, and what
they say has a common thread. Larger groups with separate checks tend to
not tip well. Many places around here have a one-check and gratuity
added policy for groups of N or more. I don't blame them. Invariably,
the tip (anywhere between marginal and generous) will be added for all
large groups, but I've found that a little extra, often on the spot,
gets better, often personal service, such as an exception to the no
substitutions policy for large parties ... kinda like a few $$$ got
past that "Valet Parking Full" sign at the Riviera last year. :)

Quite possibly that was it. Don't know for sure, however. You're much
closer to the source than I am.

Your vote is noted. I can assure you that unless something totally
unexpected occurs, what we know as DLV The Vacation will be with us for
the forseeable future.

>I agree that a convention in LV is good idea, and would probably attend
>it if I can afford the cost and time. I probably learn alot since I've

>conventions provide.

Assuming a convention spinoff does indeed occur, unless arrangements are
made for convenient joint participation in both, I will most likely skip
the convention.

I can envision something like a week-long vacation, and a weekend
convention overlapping, with the convention being one option for those
doing DLV The Vacation. Those who don't wanna listen to Electrolysis 101
can always find many other things to do in Las Vegas, and I'm sure
Milano's will be happy to serve those who want to skip the Rubber
Chicken Banquet at the hotel. :)

>But ... it should be separate from DLV and its vacation concept.

Agreed. I do think that if both groups agree, there could be an overlap
and could even be some kind of a joint activity.

Ok, to make a long story long ... :)

The DLV lore regarding this was (for those who missed it in person)
Densie and Tony bribing a waiter at Milano's to serve me a rubber
chicken (a gag one from Spencer Gifts or wherever) on a plate instead of
what I had ordered. :) The stunt actually made my day and the rubber
chicken has become quite the conversation piece at the office. This was,
of course, a reference to me stating that DLV will have a Rubber Chicken
Banquet over my dead body.

#include <no-neck_dinner_scene_soliloquy.h>

Meals at the traditional t* conventions are typically served in the
hotel's banquet hall and are right off the hotel's catering department's
list of what will give a good margin and yet get the fewest complaints.
Typically it's overdone leather sirloin, overdone prime rib (anybody
from Omaha knows that if it's well done, it ain't prime rib), or any of
countless variations of boneless chicken breast stuffed with {whatever}
or on a bed of {whatever} or with {whatever} sauce. This is not unique
to t* conventions, it's what you get at wedding receptions, trade show
banquets, employee recognition dinners, etc.

I've made jovial references to the Rubber Chicken Banquet as a
convention custom (not just t* conventions) for years. In the past I've
raised some eyebrows by referring to the "Annual Us And Them Banquet"
at t* conventions, but that's a story for a long rainy Thursday. :)

People seldom if ever rave about convention food. It's usually not bad
enough to complain about, but seldom good enough to want seconds. :)

I have seen a couple innovative but not fancy convention meals, one
in Denver where they had a local BBQ joint cater the affair, to the
chagrin of the local hotel catering department, and one at a Fall
Harvest (St Louis? Milwaukee?) where they had a Junk Food Buffet.

HM's is a chain, and I was recently told it originated in Hawaii. I know
they are at various places in California. I have no clue as to why they
have the large GLBT clientele. It kinda reminds me of a chain we have
here called Fuddruckers. (Yes, that name sounds like something that
some third grade boy would scrawl on the restroom wall.)

Both open houses were crowded. Yes, the one at GB was so bad that it
was difficult to move between areas in the shop.

They cleaned up! Totally! Both shops did, actually.

Overall for that week they did very well. That's why John asked me not
to go into bitchmode about the no-shows. The sales they made to our
people throughout the week more than made up for the minor bath on
Saturday.

If you recall, they were going to do a makeup demo thing on Saturday but
they had a limit of {mumble} people that they could comfortably seat in
the room. When we started signing up people for activities, we hit that
limit very quickly and Steph agreed to do two sessions. At DLV time we
had signups that pushed both sessions almost to the limit.

When it came down to demo time, the turnout was abysmal! They had less
than half show up. They had rented extra chairs and provided soda and
munchies which they had to eat. (Bad choice of words. :)

My gut tells me that our people will not really care about entertainment
at this hour ... they will want to chat and admire each others' outfits,
not go from one show to another show. Even that deserted bar (which may
indeed stay open longer on Saturday) would probably be a good choice for
this.

We still don't know how many of our people will be staying at the San
Remo (I am considering it just for a change) but having people staying
there would increase the demand and turnout for something like this.

Yes, and there's been a note that the limo could easily swing by the
local Taco Alpo in lieu of dinner earlier.

One thing we still don't have an answer on is food at Flex. Did they

I saw this several years ago and agree that it is a good show. I don't
think any of the three (Folies, Jubilee, Splash) totally eclipse the
others, and that any of the three would be enjoyed by our group. These
shows do have an ever-changing lineup, so any of them will be fresh in
the minds of our people who see them.

When I saw this it had bribe seating, but another show I've seen at
Bally's since then had reserved seating, so I assume they went to this
for Jubilee as well. I do remember that when I saw it, the line snaked
around the perimeter of the casino as people were being seated. I assume
this will not be the case now, assuming they have reserved seating that
is.

I don't think coming on strong can be categorized as a trait of those
who frequent any type of bar. Some straight/gay/admirer males are
perfect gentleman while others in all three categories come on like a
Mack truck.

A fair number will be (potentially) bi whether or not they identify with
the term.

I would say that the majority of our people prefer gg's as partners,
with those exclusively preferring males as partners being in the
minority.
