Call for nominations:
This summer we had a number of suggestions for possible hotels. If you
still think that those hotels you suggested would be good for our DLV
2003 people, please place them into nomination by sending a brief note
to this list (dlvorg@geekbabe.com) or by replying to this mailing.

Hotels:

>It's always OK to say anything on this list in the spirit of friendly

Yes, to question is the answer! :)
>Let me play devil's advocate for a minute.
Only a minute? :)
>I know that people have their favorite hotels and will stay at their
>own favorite if it's really important to them, but there is something
>that has always puzzled me about the Sahara and IP.
>They've always been recommended because they're the favorites of some
>of the very original Year 1 girls, right?
Yes and no. Margeth has always stayed at the IP since 1997, and that's
kinda how that started. Sahara came about because some of the 1999
people stayed there and liked it.
For the first 3 years, I stayed at the Riviera and the Stardust, and
we've had people stay at both but never any major group.
>To me, they seem pretty close to each other (in terms of Strip
>geography)
Not really. Sahara is the northernmost of the major hotels on the "Real
Strip" (where the Strip really begins and ends is somewhat a subject of
endless-loop debate) and Imperial Palace is just north of the Four
Corners intersection of Flamingo and LVB. (Which intersection is most
deserving of the name "Four Corners" is also a subject of endless-loop
debate.)
>and pretty similar in terms of price and services.
Yes, in terms of services. :) However, Sahara has been somewhat lower in
price for the past two years. It appears to me that prices at the IP
have been creeping upward over the history of DLV, at a rate higher than
that at most other places.
>When we recommend both of them, are we really offering much of a
>choice to new girls, or are we just cluttering up the menu with
>unnecessary options?
Big choice between the two is location. Imperial Palace is much closer
to the center of the action of the Strip, but that also means that the
area is horribly congested with traffic (vehicle and foot) especially on
the weekends.
>I keep waiting for a hotel suggestion that will really light my fire
>and make me want to stay at a DLV recommended hotel. Every year I hear
>such mixed reviews about the Sahara and IP that I never feel any
>interest in staying there.
I agree that both the IP and the Sahara have their fans and non-fans
within the DLV community.
I have stayed at both (although not at the IP over DLV) and have few
complaints regarding either.
>And, of course, there are never any DLV activities that actually occur
>there.
And quite possibly there never will be. :)
>I do think that the Sahara/IP duo map reasonably well in terms of
>proximity of location to many of our activites:
>- close to the Commercial Center area (Serge's, Hidden Woman, LV
>Lounge, etc.)
>- close to the Riviera (for years when we see LaCage)

>- Carluccios (although perhaps not formally)
>- Triangle dance clubs
>- Hamburger Mary's
>- Goodtimes is fairly close
>I seem to remember seeing a number of small hotels around there.
>Anybody remember any names?
The Alexis Park is right by HM's. It's nice but does not have a casino.
There's a {mumble} between Paradise and Swenson at Harmon. There's also
a HoJo and a {mumble} on Paradise just south of Tropicana. This assumes
you can sleep thru frequent jet engine blasts if/when they take off to
the northeast.
>I was never involved in the slumber party last year. Was that hotel
>near the Triangle?
No. Close to the Convention Center. General vicinity of the LV Hilton
and the Sahara. It's also well into three figures per day.
>Of course, these "no-name" or chain hotels would not be guaranteed
>t-friendly, more like the t-oblivious that Annie often mentions. Is
>there an option near the Triangle that I am missing?
San Remp {sic} is not that far away. :) As you know we were well
received there. Terrible's is at Flamingo and Paradise. I've played
there with no problems.
Now my turn to play Devil's Advocate. :)
It's been my observation that proximity to our activities is, at most, a
minor consideration for our people when selecting a hotel.
"Close" really doesn't mean much in most of Las Vegas. Even if somebody
stays in a hotel "close" to many of our activities, it's still gonna be
at a distance to make transportation an issue.
I guess I should rephrase that to say that there is no hotel or set of
hotels that will significantly reduce our transportation issues.
Sure, we may attempt to concentrate our people more. That may help
somewhat, but there's still a ride required for each person to and from
each activity.
The reasons I've heard our people state for selecting a hotel include:
. Price. Probably the most frequent reason I've heard, by far, and it's
a major consideration for me. The bottom line is the bottom line, not
to sound like a stuck CD. :)
. Known t-friendliness (obliviousness). They want some kind of assurance
that they will at least be tolerated.
. Familiarity with the property. A favorite place to stay and play.
. Availability of comps or casino rate.
. Because {so and so} is staying there.
. Because nobody else from DLV is staying there. (This has been
whispered to me a couple times. I think this is a larger factor than we
may be aware of, actually. :)
. So I can walk from the room to the car without going thru
hotel/casino. This has been mentioned countless times, over and over. I
can even cite one person who cancelled a DLV registration when the
Stardust motor inn rooms were closed, and gave this reason for the
cancellation.
. More upscale. This was never heard during the early years of DLV,
but some people chose this for 2002. Some of our people want a more
glamorous and luxurious vacation, and, imao, that should be an option
if they want it.
For me, personally, price and comfort are the most important factors. I
can be absent from a $39 room just as easily as I can be from a $200 room.
I want something that's clean, quiet, and has a solid phone line.
I prefer a hotel with a casino that has the games I like, a buffet that
is reasonable and non-gross, and a 24 hour coffee shop. Of the three
places I've stayed for DLV (Riviera, Stardust, Sahara) all three have
been a good fit, for me, anyway.
For the past few years, I've been under one additional constraint, and
that is the hotel has to be ok with our corporate travel people, since
I've attended DLV and N+I back to back.
I see our hotel suggestions primarily going toward two types of people:
1. Newcomers who are unfamiliar with the area and the hotels.
2. Newcomers and returnees who want to be with the others. (For any of a
variety of reasons.)
I don't think it will ever be possible with our current model to
concentrate our people in any particular hotel or area. Our people are
too independent and have varying needs and wants.
The only argument I can see in favor of concentrating is for convenience
of transportation.
We have some comments below on the shuttle issue. At this time I have no
clue as to whether this will work or not.
A case can be made (in favor of concentrating) for rates, but I don't
think that will readily happen with our current volume and event model.
Comments, ladies (gentlemen)?
As an aside, I've had people contact me with regard to suggestions for
alternative hotels in the area for the upcoming Fall Harvest (Omaha in
December). Reasons cited were "I want something cheaper" and "I don't
want to stay where everybody else is."

Shuttle and parking:

With the responses that have come in, I'm questioning whether there's
going to be a demand or not. We've only received one positive comment
and a few negative ones.
With only had 4-5 responses on this out of 300-some on the list, it
appears to be that at this time, it's not of interest, but ...
Perhaps this topic ought to be revisited when registration begins.
Yes, if we do it we should make arrangements for return trips and
intermediate trips as well.
>Someone, maybe you, asked about the parking around the Triangle
>District...... as far as I know there has been no agreement to provide
>additional parking so everything remains status quo..... unfortunately.
I would think they would want to ease the parking crunch. It was the
doorman at Sasha's who told me they were going to be offering valet
parking. I think it would help their business to offer this.
>I also think Hamburger Mary's is a good spot for the pre-DLV
>gathering.... cold food or not. lol
We've definitely outgrown Milano's for this. :) I'm gonna pencil this in
on the schedule as the location. I'll mark it as a combined Happy Hour
and meal.

Correspondence with Tiny:
Here's a synopsis of my recent correspondence with Tiny Bubbles of
Showgirls Of Magic fame ...
+a>Hi Tiny,
+a>Just to let you know how plans are coming for DLV 2003.
+a>The dates have now been finalized for Diva Las Vegas 2003. It will
+a>run from Tuesday April 22 thru Sunday April 27, with a possible
+a>extension of one day either way if the demand and the volunteers are
+a>there.
+a>We're tentatively planning to visit your show on Saturday, April 26,
+a>most likely the late show.
+a>It's far too early to give a headcount, but I think it's safe to say
+a>that at least 50 will be attending the show, probably more. We're
+a>projecting a total headcount of 100-120, but as you know, everything
+a>is optional.
+a>I'm also recommending your show to some (straight) friends who will
+a>be visiting Las Vegas next month.
+a>Anyway, as plans progress I'll keep you in the loop. Everybody who
+a>saw the show loved it, and it was pretty much a unanimous choice for
+a>the big show on Saturday.
+a>OBTW, Vince is back in Omaha in his new position.
+a>Take care, hope things are going well with you.
. . . . .
+t>WOW! WE are the "big" show for Saturday night? YIPPEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! (I
+t>understand it is all tenitive, but still it's nice to know we are "in
+t>the running!") ;o)
+t>Lots happening here in Vegas... SIX (?!?) Showgirls of Magic and
+t>myself are bneing flown to TOKYO, JAPAN to do 4 to 6 weeks of shows
+t>there! I get back in Feburary and fly up to Lake Tahoe to open our
+t>second unit of Showgirls of Magic for a one year run up there - (I
+t>will only be there 4 weeks to help get the show off and running
+t>smoothly... I HATE Snow, it drys my skin out!) heehee
+t>Can't wait to see you all again! This will be a HOOT!
+t>Tell Vince I said I want to bear his children, give EVERYONE in Omaha
+t>my personal number, and I'll talk to ya again real soon! Thanks again
+t>for the updates!
