Org List:
This is the DLV 2003 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
Ongoing activity database appears on line at:

Vote results:
Polls closed Friday afternoon, 24 hours after the last vote was
received.
The first vote came within seconds, literally, of the sending of the
call for votes.
Of the 44 people eligible to vote (the list has 46 members, including
one test address and one ringer), 24 votes were received. Totals are:
18 votes for 1: Tuesday, April 22 thru Sunday, April 27.
6 votes for 2: Thursday, May 1 thru Tuesday, May 6.
One vote was received in duplicate, and the second reception was
discarded. One person voted specifying the month of option 2 and the
days of option 1 and a resend was requested and received.
One abstain was received, with a comment that it was an equal preference
for either option.
Due to the results, I'm marking the tentative dates on the web site and
we'll announce them, with a one month call for comments, in the mailing
to the general list next week.
The Message-ID lines of the votes are as follows. If you don't think
yours is in here, please let me know.
Raw votes are on file if necessary.

Moving forward:
Now that we have our dates tentatively set, here are some items on our
do-it list for the months to come:
1. Activity planning. Our most important and most critical function.
2. Hotel selection. Which hotels we will suggest for our people for
DLV 2003.
3. Promotion and publicity. I really think we have most of this covered
already this year. With Laura's articles, we should have some very deep
and broad exposure. We just have to be sure we hit all the usual t*
event calendars, newsletters, etc.
4. Transportation.
5. Big Sisters. Do we want to continue our method of informally matching
sisters one to one, or do we need more coordination and formalization in
this area?
6. Anything else that will take a significant amount of lead time. If
anybody thinks of something that may come up after there's no time to
do anything about it, please put it on the plate now.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity planning:
This will be our most important and critical job. We now have our dates
set, but our day-to-day schedule of activities is still, for the most
part, tabula rasa.
We'll now add the schedule summary to each of our DLVORG mailings. As
before, it will be marked as "updated" in the TOC following each
nontrivial change or addition.
I've taken the liberty of plugging in the few activities which we've
more or less had a consensus on over the past few months. As you can
see below, holes predominate.
It's now up to us, individually and collectively, to step up to the
plate, take a swing at things, and fill in those blanks.
I'm volunteering to coordinate the Showgirls Of Magic show on Saturday
evening. In conjunction with this, let's also plan for a buffet dinner
just before (at the San Remo), with the option of having a happy hour
there, if it fits in with our plans for our ongoing happy hour. (This
would mean 2-3 activities in the same place without a move.)
Now, what activity do YOU want to adopt? :)
We're now about 1/4 of the way through the year to DLV 2003. I would like
to see us have a schedule of activities painted in broad strokes by the
end of the year. Details can then be filled in, if necessary, during the
first few months of 2003.
We'll need to have any activity that requires a signup, hoop-jump,
advance payment, reservation, etc. in stone by the end of March,
possibly before in the case of high-demand items that often sell out.
Let's keep this in mind as we plan things.
We'll also need to consider (but not be handcuffed by) such thing as
transportation, down-time, and other activities that may preceed,
follow, or run concurrently, when planning any activities.
I also envision two-tracking as an option for just about every timeslot
except for the feature evening activities on the weekend.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hotel selection:
We've had a number of hotels mentioned over the past few months as
possibilities of being the hotels we suggest to the DLV 2003 people.
We've had a lot of discussion regarding these, not much lately, however,
but I did not see a consensus forming with regard to which properties to
suggest and how many to suggest.
We've seen a number of issues emerge, such as a call to concentrate and
a call to diversify, a call for an upscale suggestion such as the Mandalay
Bay or Bellagio, and a call to suggest places known to be t-friendly.
We've previously agreed that November is the timeframe in which we
should have these selections made. From now until the middle of
November, let's (continue to) discuss the various properties and the
issues surrounding our selections.
Then let's call the question in November by a popular vote on each
property that has been nominated from this point on.
This will settle not only the issue of which properties, but also the
issues of how many, centralization, diversification, up/down scale, etc.
For example, those who want to centralize can vote for one and only one
hotel. If only one hotel shows a majority, then the tribe has spoken and
we centralize. Those who want to see us diversify can vote for all.
Those who want to see us centered around the Trop/Strip area, vote only
for those in that area.
Please send in your hotel choices for discussion and eventual vote.
I would like to place three properties on the block as nominations:
1. Sahara. Why? Because our people like it. Only negative I can think of
for the Sahara is that some consider it to be suboptimally located. If
it ain't broke, don't fix it.
2. Imperial Palace. Why? Because our people like it. Yes, some consider
it to be a bit plebean for their taste, but there have been no major
problems there. It's the only hotel that has been used by DLV people
every year. Only negative I can personally think of is that it's in an
area that is heavily congested with vehicle and foot traffic.
3. Bellagio. Why? Because I'm hearing a calling for a more upscale
suggestion for those who want it. I've never stayed there, but it's
been rated as t-friendly (or at least t-oblivious) by somebody whose
opinions I value. Only negative I can think of is $$$$$. (I can sleep
just as soundly and be mostly absent from a $39 room as I can a $200
room.)
We've set November as our target for deciding, and we have until then to
discuss, but we don't want to put this on the back burner.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Transportation:
This was a major topic of discussion just after DLV 2002. This was
apparently on the mind of many, but did not show as a major difficulty
on the post-DLV survey.
I see a number of options we have involving this:
1. Keep the same procedure we have. Everybody ultimately responsible for
their own transportation, but compile and distribute lists of volunteer
drivers and those who need rides. Is it broken? Do we need to fix it?
2. Streamline the process. Ask those who need rides to stay in one of
our suggested hotels. Ask all drivers to swing by the pick-up point at a
designated pick-up time.
3. Chartered shuttle. If this is to work, those using it **MUST** be
ready on time, and must be ready to leave an activity when the boat
leaves. It will also require some busy work and some $$$ work to
coordinate.
4. None. Each participant is responsible for their own. Encourage people
to share rides and carpool, but don't do any matching or organizing.

I'm assuming for something like this, the special shirt/blouse would be
optional. I do agree with you that the benefit/cost-effort ratio might
be quite low.

DVD and multimedia:

I'm sure we can put something like that on the server here. If it's
too big, I may want to put it in a user area other than DLV, so it does
not cause the DLV site to be locked out if it gets pulled too many times
in a short period.
>I'm also looking for a free site I can post some projects, can anyone
>refer some free sites or low cost ones?
Although I'm quite partial to the geekbabe.com and girlmode.com sites
<bfg> I've been sending people to the usual ones such as geocities when
they indicate they will be posting tons of pics or audio/video stuff.
Most web space providers, both free and pay, now have some type of limit,
either rate limit or transfer limit. Bandwidth is the expensive part of
the web-hosting equation.

Here's the list of those who registered who stated they are from the Las
Vegas area. Some did not show, but this is the most complete list. I see
a few on there who have attended in the past, multiple times, but did
not show this year. (?????)
