This mailing:

There are a number of items this week regarding security. I would like
to see us discuss these items here, to a conclusion, and not dwell
upon them when the main list gets going in January.

As we discussed at dinner in Las Vegas last month, we need to keep a
positive "spin" on this year's DLV. We need to emphasize the fun we're
gonna have over any uncertainty or security issues.

We need to answer any security questions and concerns with accurate
no-bullsh*t answers that will not lead to endless-loop discussion and
debate.

Web pages:

In cleaning up the boilerplate files in anticipation of when the regular
mailing list goes forward, I tested a few of the URL's on the web page
listing and found a number to be dead or badly out of date.

Therefore, I would like to start the DLV personal web page listing over
from scratch.

If you have a personal web site, and want to see it listed in the
boilerplate of the regular DLV 2002 mailings, please reply to this and
give us your URL. Thanks.

That's too bad. I really didn't think they would make a go of it out
there in Yuppieville. They need a place with a good solid visitor and
tourist base.

Thanks. Keep an eye open for us, please.

Aiko is the official volunteer of record for this, and we have one other
who kinda volunteered to volunteer previously. Perhaps you and Aiko could
get together on this. I'll forward initial e-mails if you two want.

Ok, we'll check back with you just before DLV. We've got a "Mall Crawl"
scheduled for Saturday. (I'm still hoping that somebody will schedule
something new and exciting {HINT} for that timeslot so that will be
bumped to another afternoon.) We'll definitely do Belz on that trip.

The unclaimed prizes for the previous DLV door prize drawings can be
used for this. There are three small items, iirc. I may want to ship
them out to you rather than schlep them on the plane, since I'm sure
I will be carrying a full load.

I'll also donate one of those gold/silver strike pendants to the cause.

I'm not a golfer, but one thing I would like to have you consider is
keeping it affordable for those who want to do it. As you know, we
have a broad spectrum of people, financially speaking, from those who
are very flush, to those who are barely getting by. I don't wanna see
anybody locked out due to $$$$$.

That's good to hear. I do want to be sure we let our people know what
is going on, and what to expect, but I don't wanna alarm them.

Well, we don't have any late-nite gaming on the schedule, at least yet.
Looking at the schedule, the only night we don't have any late thing
going is Tuesday. It could also be an option for any evening, or for
any day, actually. It could second-track against almost anything.

>if anybody has any ideas let me know
>and i will talk to management and the host dept.

Does your place do promotional match-play coupons? Maybe handing these
out to DLV people, maybe with a note that Boardwalk welcomes them to
play in either mode would get some people in there.

I have a feeling that a lot of our people would *like* to do the tables
and machines in girlmode but are just a bit shy or uneasy to do so. I'm
sure that if the casino made even a modest promotion, they would get
quite a few of our people.

I don't think this is necessary, in fact, I don't want to see it happen.
{grab can of worms, walk toward can opener} I don't think we want to be
in the (fake) ID business, period.

Metro police and casino security people will want to see some kind of
an official government ID, and not something created by a group they
most likely have never heard of, let alone by one of us.

If I may speak very freely here, I think the issue of security is
being dwelled upon far in excess of its need. The facts are: Vehicle
inspections are the exception, not the rule, and the places we patronize
for DLV value us as customers and want our business.

I think we need to be aware of what's going on in regards to security,
both regarding travel and LV venues, and give our people quick no-BS
answers to their questions and concerns, which will definitely arise.

Thanks for the report and the response. However, my observations are
quite different, both in terms of me and those I've talked to. I've
been out in Omaha, Las Vegas, and Chicago since the attack, and had
no trouble at all. Granted, there's a higher police and security
presence than there was before.

At Pinkfest in Chicago, although most of us stayed in motels out in
the burbs, we had people staying at the Hilton and the Palmer house
downtown, which I would consider in the same class as the Crowne and
the LA Marriott. Nobody reported any difficulties.

The only thing I would call a hassle with security would have happened
just the same even if the two involved were in boymode.

Regarding hotel security checkpoints, yes, those spook some of our
people, and many places in Las Vegas use them, including the Sahara in
two of the towers and the Stardust in the larger tower. I have yet to
hear of any of our people having a hassle at the checkpoints. Usually
they will just look at the room key and wave you on thru. Sometimes they
will run the key card thru the card reader and see if it's current. The
most I've ever heard those guards doing is asking the number of the room
and comparing it to what the card reader shows.

As far as security information and "warnings" to our people, I know the
subject is gonna come up on the general mailing list once it gets going.
Sure, some people may use the security concerns, both fear of injury and
fear of confrontation, as an excuse to not come to DLV, but most will
want the straight story.

We know from experience that most hotels in LV want our business, both
as guests and as players. They're not gonna hassle a valued guest if
they don't have a reason to do so, especially now since paying guests
are a bit more valuable than they were before September.

I don't see any reason to change our practice of recommending a few
properties we know to be nice and t-friendly, and letting our people
stay there, or other places if they have a reason to do so.

Word gets out fast, in abundance, and persists ad infinitum, when a
hotel is judged to be t-unfriendly. It has to be going on ten years
since the original incident happened at c**2, but whenever somebody asks
about Las Vegas in the newsfroups, a chorus of No Circus resounds. The
list I maintain still has c**2 marked with a yellow light, even though
we've had DLV people stay there and I've played there with no problems.
