Timing and some concerns:

We how have three weeks until we wind this list down for the holidays.
As I've said before, we have most of our major bases covered, and a
well-rounded schedule of activities that I'm sure will appeal to the
DLV 2002 potential participants.

However, I have one major concern here, regarding one major un-done
item on the schedule. That is the Saturday evening show. We've had
several calls for comments and discussion with very little in the way
of comments and discussion.

More importantly, nobody has stepped forward and expressed any interest
in doing the legwork to make this happen. We're gonna have to have one
(or more) of our DLV vounteers (that's us, gang) agree to do this if we
want it to happen.

I'll start the discussion here. Please continue. Let's hear your
thoughts, feelings, and concerns.

A reasonably accurate list of shows of various types appears in the Neon
section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. http://www.lvrj.com/neon/

We probably don't want a FI type show for Saturday, since we're doing
Frank Marino on Thursday and since we did a (kinda) FI show on Saturday
last year. That leaves basically these types of shows, those being:

1. Legacy Las Vegas variety shows, you know, the ones with showgirls,
animals, showgirls, dancers, showgirls, magicians, showgirls, guest
stars, showgirls, gauchos, did I mention showgirls? :) These are
becoming a scarce item now, but there are a few still out there, such as
Folies (did that last year), Jubilee, Splash (did that in 2000) and a
new one, LaFemme. They tell me (the ubiquitous "they) that Skintight
has closed or is closing.

2. I'll call these the non-FI musical impression shows, such as Legends
In Concert, American Superstars, Honky Tonk Angels, Rat Pack, etc.

3. The non-showgirl musical/dance/magic/whatever show, such as EFX and
even such things as Lord Of The Dance. I'm unclear whether Wayne Newton
fits here or in 1, since I don't know how many showgirls he has in his
show. :) S&R would probably fit here.

4. The newer "artsy" show such as Mystere or O. I would put Blue Man
Group in here too, but it's much earthier than the other two. De La
Guardia has closed or is closing.

Anyway, I can imagine shows of any category above being candidates.
Categories 3 and 4 tend to be a bit more spendy than those in 1 and
2, but there are reasonably-priced shows and expensive shows in just
about any category.

We can discuss the shows here, but I prefer that the final selection of
the specific show be up to the person(s) who volunteers to coordinate
the activity for DLV.

For those who are hesitant toward volunteering due to the hoop-jumping
and complexities, there are some shows where the collection of $$$ is
not necessary. For Kenny Kerr last year, all I had to do was to provide
them an approximate headcount as the date approaches. Everybody paid
separately. Experience has shown us that with La Cage, it's not
difficult to get the group seated together, even though they paid
separately as long as everybody is on time.

Anyway, I would like to see us get some discussion (and some volunteers)
on this before we break for the holidays.

Comments? (volunteers?)

Side trips and such:

Thanks. I've never been up there. Sounds like there is not really that
much to do.

Ouch! :(

Yes, there is a charge, both for Red Rock and Valley of Fire, as well as
the Lake Mead Rec. Area. Seems like when I've been to all three, the
collection is kinda sporadic. Last time at VOF, they had a note on the
booth to pay at the visitor center.

A few $$$ per car, iirc. At RRC one year, one of our people had a
National Park pass or something like that, which got our vehicle in.

We were strictly sightseeing, not hiking. :)

>I'll keep my eyes open on options for a day trip that might be

Ok, thanks. I'm thinking of something close and quick as something that
will work for Sunday afternoon. I know we've had proposals for a few
hardcore outdoorsy things, but those have never had people jumping up
and down and waving their hands and yellling "ooo oooh". :)

Buffets and Keys:

I admit I enjoy many of the Las Vegas buffets. On my trip a few weeks
ago, I think the only meal I did not eat in a buffet was at Keys that
one evening.

Buffets do, unfortunately, vary in selection and quality. Places with
"Station" in their name seem to be quite consistently good. I've always
liked the Sahara buffet, but some of our people last year complained
about it. I've enjoyed both the Fitzgerald's and even Boardwalk, even
though the LV discussion groups will tell you both are to be avoided.
I do agree that the buffets at C**2 and Westward Ho are toxic.

More I think of it, the more I'm leaning toward suggesting a modest
buffet for the Keys evening. A couple main items that are well-liked and
some sides, maybe a small salad spread as well. Certainly nothing fancy,
but something that most everybody will enjoy.

Leah, next time you're in there, can you ask them what kinds of items
they could do for something like this and give us some ideas? Then we
can make some informed decisions.

Very true. With the lavish all-u-can-scarf buffets and the loss-leader
specials, it is hard for the independent places to keep up. However, Las
Vegas does seem to have a good variety of non-casino restaurants and the
casino specials do help keep prices reasonable.

I think for this year, I'm gonna put a section on this in the War And
Peace edition of the newsletter that goes out right before DLV. We might
also warn everybody while we are taking the group shots that if they
don't wanna appear on the web, or even on the front page of their
hometown newspaper ... who knows where those pics will end up ... then
they should not pose.

I don't really think the person who complained last year was aware of
the fact that the chance of being recognized by a casual web surfer is
so small as to be statistically insignificant.

Do we really want to post that to this list? :)

Uh ...

>And what's this I keep hearing about you and lidocaine?

Yes, unfortunately, I have to go to the dentist every so often ...

>>I don't think this is DIRECTLY due to the attack, but more of a ripple

>Ripple?!? Before you were drinking Galliano!

Actually, for once I'm gonna have to admit something you said was
correct. :) Years ago I was helping console a FOAF after a recent
breakup and three of us consumed this huge container of Ripple in a
very short time with no food. I was *very* sick the next morning.

Ripple doesn't taste that bad, sneaks up on you, and does not make you
simply inebriated, but very sick.

Galiano {sic} on the other hand smells nasty, tastes totally 144, and
at least gives the clue that it might not be the best thing to be
consuming, along with such things as kerosene, Pine-Sol, dimethyl
hydrazine, and Yoohoo. :)

>>>They [Goodtimes] now have a dance floor area with DJ and put a new

Hey, just throw it in the hopper and flush! :)

T* shops:

I hope I'm right too, but only time will tell. I really think the t*
market in Las Vegas is a gusher just waiting to be tapped. GB is going
strongly for both the townie and transient people. They are doing ads
in both the Bugle (local) and What's On (transient) and if HW does as
well, they will both get traffic that is to this day unseen.

Look around at expressway interchanges. When a McDonalds appears, it is
only a matter of time until Arby's (or Wendy's, or BK, or Kentucky Fried
Rat) appears. Seldom if ever does Mickey's go outa business when the
others arrive. People see that collection of signs and pull off and
patronize all of them.

If I may speak very freely here, LVFT lacked exposure. I saw almost no
advertising, and their web site was not very effective. GB is indeed
reaching out and actively seeking customers.
