This Sunday:

If anybody did not get the word, I won't be able to meet at Keys this
Sunday. My conference was cancelled about 12 hours before I was to
get on the plane out to San Jose.

I'm suggesting that everybody go ahead and meet at Keys and have a
drink and a chat. You don't need me to have a good time. :)

Ironic, but the flight I was to take took off more or less on time.

Anyway, they will be rescheduling, and hopefully I will be able to
make it.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activities:

Looking over our scheduled and proposed activities, it looks like we're
starting to get a very rich set of things to do, some of them being old
favorites, and others being new and different. Put a selection of these
together, we'll have a DLV that will live in fond memories for a very
long time.

One thing that's missing, however, in many cases, are volunteers to make
these things happen.

Thanks to all who have already stepped forward and volunteered to help
make these things a reality. Hopefully others will now follow your
example.

If you don't think you're up to doing something alone, put in your name
and say you would be willing to assist.

Anyway, here are some of the activities which are now in need of
"adoption":

1. Thursday evening FI show. If it's gonna be La Cage as has been
suggested, it really does not take much effort on your part. All you
really have to do is find out when, where, and how much, and let the
people know what hoops they have to jump thru (like buy a ticket and
show up) if they want to attend.

2. Saturday evening Las Vegas show. This is probably the most visible
and most critical thing that has yet to be adopted. Depending on which
show is selected (and I would say anybody who steps forward to do this
should have considerable say in which show it is), it could either be
easy, such as telling people to show up and pay, or it could require a
bit of busywork, such as was required with the Folies show last year.

3. Limo tour. If this is to happen again this year, we need to have
somebody adopt it and give it a name. This could be almost any evening,
even after our "farewell" party on Sunday.

4. North Rim Grand Canyon trip. Won't really require much legwork other
than making some plans, picking a route, and deciding when to do it.

We also have a few items where people have volunteered to coordinate
something that we must decide on schedule and timeslot issues.

1. Robyn: You volunteered to coordinate a lunch at one of the better
buffets. Any ideas of when you want this to happen? Do you want this to
segue into the afternoon Liberace/LVFT/Goodtimes thing? Looking at the
schedule, Wednesday or Thursday looks like it would be a good fit.

2. Densie: Skydiving. I realize this is not for everybody, but where
on the schedule do you want this. Pick a time. :)

3. Annie: Mall Crawl. I'm gonna put this in for Saturday at Noon.

Why, you ask?

Because I want somebody to plan something big and exciting for Saturday
afternoon and bump this to a weekday ... really. :)

4. Annie: Side trip. I'm gonna put this one down for Sunday afternoon,
kind of as a replacement for the Dam tour. This will be subject to
preemption if/when somebody proposes something else in place of or in
addition to this.

We still have some open timeslots, and some where a second track or
alternative will work. For example, not everybody is gonna want to do
golf. A proposal for some additional activity for Friday afternoon would
be appropriate.

Schedule, etc.:

One thing we do need to keep an eye on is which time slots have NOT been
filled. :)

Do we need both a summary and a detailed schedule? I don't see any
problem with both, but yes it will add to the volume of this mailing.
I've included both in this issue.

Actually I'm thinking of you in particular, but considering everybody
when I think of the schedule problems that people encountered during
DLV 2001.

>Will 10:00am be early enough?

I'm not a golfer, but I would assume any earlier might not be that
great for those who want to golf and burn the midnite oil ("how do
we sleep while our beds are burning" :) late Thursday.

Any later and we would most likely run the risk of the golfers getting
into a time crunch for the evening activities.

Actually that would make a very good prize, and a great change

Actually, I think they realize that t* business is important to them.

I think most of you know my personal thoughts and feelings about this,
but I'll repeat them anyway. :) :) :)

Let's look at Michelle's burning questions ...

>Should DLV have an "official" hotel as in
> - a hotel that has good room rates
> - centrally located
> - T Friendly
> - $ friendly

I think most everybody agrees that we do need at least one hotel to
name as a suggested/recommended/official/whatever place for our people
to stay.

I think good room rates are a given for consideration as our official
hotel(s).

As for "centrally located", about our only favorite place to stay that
is considered (by LV regulars) to be really centrally located is the
Imperial Palace. The other DLV favorites (Sahara, Stardust, Riviera,
Palace Station, LV Hilton) are toward or off the north end of the Strip.

I think we've kinda gravitated toward those last ones for a number of
reasons, those being good rates (with exception of LV Hilton during
N+I), all of them having a reputation of being t-friendly, or at least
t-oblivious, and the fact that it's usually easy to get a room at one of
them even at short notice.

As to the t-friendliness of the various hotels, a t-hostile hotel in
Las Vegas is the exception and not the rule. I even think there's some
question as to the t-hostility of those that have the reputation of
being so, such as Circus-Circus.

But if we recommend one or more places, I think it's very important
that those places have established themselves as being at least tolerant
of our antics. :)

$$$-friendly? Most of our people want to pay less than 3 figures a day
for accommodations. (Those who want to pay more will have no problem
finding a place that will take their $$$.)
...

However (comma) ...

>1) We want an "official" hotel

Consensus: Yes, it's a Good Thing to get our people together.

Devil's Advocate: No, none of our activities are in that hotel, and our
people stay where they want, so why bother?

Comments?

>2) We select an appropriate one (Ie IP, Sahara, etc)

One question here, do we want to limit this to one and only one?

>3) Publish this on the basis that it's up to the participants to get a
>room and rate there, etc.

Yes, I think it's been firmly established that we don't wanna be in the
money-schlepping business, and that for the most part, our people can
get the best deals if they deal directly with the hotels or with a
travel agent, and take advantage of the bargains that are almost
always available.
...

Bottom line: Most seem to be in agreement that we need, for any of several
reasons, one or more recommended or official hotels. I think it's important
that we discuss these issues now and make some decisions prior to shutting
down this list for the holidays (roughly third week in November). That gives
us a little more than two months.

Personally, I don't see any compelling reason to change last year's
method of recommending two hotels, the Sahara and the Imperial Palace,
letting our people choose from them and others, etc., etc.

Dress Barn:

I know they have dresses, at least in most of them. I've been to the Las
Vegas (Belz, there are others) one and one in a small outlet mall a couple
exits up from where I live. I haven't bought anything there, nothing that
really caught my eye. They do seem to do a good business, and Dress Barn
stores seem to be popping up all over the place.

Well, I would do it ... for one nite that is. Suggestion: don't make it
right before Networld+Interop for obvious reasons.

Which evening are you thinking of for this?

Karaoke could easily be an after-whatever activity, or a second-track
activity any evening. On Wednesday we have the Keys thing, and those who
want to do or watch Karaoke could easily migrate over to Goodtimes at
the appropriate time.

Driving or flying day trip could be an option almost any day. Only days
that might be avoided would be Friday and Saturday. I've got a day trip
penciled in on Sunday, and this could be just that, or something in
addition to it. Wednesday and Thursday during the day are still wide
open.

>I also like the alternating approach, so this year would seem to be
>Frank's turn. Count me as another vote for Frank

Ok, another vote in the "Frank" column.

>Doesn't that mean reserved seats?

Not really. They claim to enforce seating more than they do. In
actuality they have two classes of seats, regular and VIP. VIP are the
seats up front, regular in back. IMAO, the extra few $$$ for the VIP
seats are well worth it.

History has shown that those who arrive on time and with the group will
be seated with the group, even though their tickets might not have been
ordered as part of the group. Trick to getting good seats together is to
get everybody on line early and together.

They fill the showroom from the very front of the two sections. If
somebody's late, they can't get up front even with a bribe.

On two occasions, we jumped thru hoops to get everybody's tickets
together only to find it was easy to get those who had purchased tickets
separately to be seated with the group.

>Since I consider Kenny far superior, I hope I find time to see his show
>again on the side. I'm worried that he needs the business.

Again, this could easily be a second-track or after-whatever activity.
I might be interested in going out there and seeing it as well.
