Going twice ...

Three weeks into our discussion period gives us not very much actual
discussion about the dates, but several comments stating people are
in favor of the May 2-7 timeframe.

Speak now or forever ...

Clubbing:

>I think the suggestion of going to a "straight" club is a good one.
>However, it is important to know whether or not it is place hostile to
>T-girls.

Yes, most definitely. We'll only schedule places we know to be ok.

>I know a local T-girl who was asked to leave the Beach Club,
>for example.

I've never been there. This is a place by the Convention Center where
they tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that convention-goers can pick up
local twentyboppers. I keep getting this one confused with The Drink,
but I've been to The Drink (a reception), but not The Beach.

Thanks for reporting this. I'll put a note on the big list of
not-recommended places.

>I love to go dancing, and will go every night if anyone
>wants to go with me.

And we've had others who enjoy this as well.

>Also, the "2-track" idea is excellent. Some may want to go to someplace
>such as Gipsy, and others to a more mainstream club. In any event, I
>think there should be a chance to all get together at the end of the
>evening, say at Keys.

I think most evenings, we'll probably have one official after-hours
place which is popular and also known to be "safe". I see such things
as late-nite hanging out at a casino lounge to be an alternate track
for those who want more real-world exposure.

Dates:

>The dates appear to be very good...coming before the
>real heat and avoiding any major conflicting dates.

That's what concensus seems to indicate.

Dates, travel, etc.:

>something for the Interop people to consider on the new dates, usually
>if, as a manager, I send someone on a trip to a convention or whatever,
>I allow them travel pay to and from the area and have no qualms about
>them taking a follow-on vacation. However, should they go there before
>the convention for a vacation and then go to a convention, I consider
>there travel to be from the place which they were at at the time so
>hence no travel pay if they were already there for vacation. ;-) don't
>know how other places work but it's something to start asking about. Of
>course you don't have to tell them that you are already there but plane
>ticket dates and travel reciepts generally give it away.

I suppose this varies quite a bit from company to company. Our travel
people don't really care, just as long as the expense report and what
is budgeted for the conference agree. Of course they won't pay for
meals and hotel for the vacation portion. :)

>I personally am OK with whatever date is set other than one semester
>being unavailable due to it, but I guess I could take a web course and
>finish it while there, but that wouldn't be any phun. If everyone else
>likes it then so be it but still kinda like the "do finals and get to
>DLV" concept.

I remember when I was back in college, many of the professors would allow
people to take the final early if they had a schedule conflict. This will
most likely vary from school to school and prof to prof.

>As for mother's day, my mother passed away in 83 and I don't have a
>wife anymore so it's not a biggie. Even still, if I did, I find that me
>being away and sending flowers is a wonderful gift to them!! They not
>only get a nice flower arrangement but their peace of mind for a week.
>:)

As you know, we've now had DLV over Mothers Day three times (you've been
there all three :).

Although we've had no major complaints until this year, concensus seems
to be that we avoid that weekend if at all possible.

Out or safe:

>> We might wanna either strive for a happy medium or have two alternatives
>> for people. Although we always want to encourage people to get out in
>> the public places, doing so will scare the hell out of many of our
>> newcomers. Two people mentioned to me they were very nervous (one used
>> the term "scared sh*tless") going to the Riviera to the show.

>Can you give a couple of examples of places that represent this happy
>medium?

Off hand, something like the Terrace Bar at the Stardust comes to mind.
It's off the beaten path and usually un-crowded weekday evenings.
Another might be the casino bar at the Imperial Palace, although it's
more out in the open. I know both the IP and the Stardust have seen a
bit of us over the years, with no problems.

Problem I see is these might be still too intimidating for many of the
people, especially when we consider people will be drinking, and nature
will call. Heck, we had people uneasy using the ladies room at
Goodtimes, which is a lockable one-seater.

Solution might be to have these things in the casino bar of our
"official" hotel, whatever that may be, so those who are a bit shy
about using the public facilities can use their rooms.

>> One idea would be to have two late-nite gathering places, one in a
>> familiar and, yes, safe place, and another in something like a strip
>> casino lounge. Those who are comfortable with it could go to the casino
>> and those who are not could go to the "safe" place.

>Although I have proposed alternative activities in past years, I think
>we should minimize them unless there is a sharp divergence in
>needs/interests/desires for a significant number of people.

>Rather than have two different late night gathering places every (or
>most nights), I would like to see a main designated place where everyone

>with the main activity.

A fallback place might be the answer here.

>> Besides, our people consistently say they really enjoy such places as
>> Keys, Goodtimes, and Las Vegas Lounge.

>We should continue to include Keys, LVL, and Goodtimes in our main

>advantage to them is that they get to go with experienced people.

>We definitely want to welcome and include newcomers, and we do a good
>job of this, but we don't need to have every single event be totally
>circumscribed by newcomer limits.

We need a constant influx of newcomers if we are to prevent DLV from
getting stale. See my notes in the "who comes to DLV" item.

Who comes to DLV:

As I looked over Tina's notes, I started thinking about who actually
comes to DLV, and where on the t* and social spectra they fall.

Socially, almost all our people are somewhat outgoing. Those who are
uneasy in public (as people, not as t's necessarily) or uncomfortable
meeting new people just don't come. We've had potential participants
remark on this already, that they were not scared of the public thing
as a t*, but uneasy around groups of people they don't know.

On the t* spectrum, we get the middle, so to speak. Our event will not
appeal to those who have been fully transitioned for many years. It
may appeal to those who are deep in the closet, but they will not be
the ones who actually show.

We do get a good broad selection from the middle. We have post-ops on
one end, and those who are just peeking out of the closet on the other
end. The post-ops tend to come because they know others who will be
there and want a nice get-away and such. Those just peeking out want a
(possibly first) chance to meet others and to test the en-femme waters.

A good percentage of our people therefore come from the center of the
center, the peak of the bell-curve. These are the people who go out
occasionally to regularly, have been to groups, local clubs, are perhaps
veterans of the cons such as Fanfair and Southern Comfort. In order to
keep these people, we have to have activities that are fresh and perhaps
challenging. This is the group who would most like to have more
experience in the mainline real-world as opposed to the world of GLBT
bars and "safe" activities. I think we can safely say this group will
lose interest with a repetitive DLV.

One purpose of DLV has always been to serve the community by encouraging
those in the closet to break out. Closetbusting, as I sometimes like to
call it. I like to think of our nervous-Nellie newcomers as our regulars
of tomorrow. This is the area where we can make a significant impact on
our community as a whole. This is the area where lives are changed for
the better on a grandiose scale.

Therefore, I see two groups of people we need to cater to in order to
allow DLV to be most effective, those who are just coming out of the
closet, and those who are out and active in the community.

We have to consider the common needs of both groups, and the specific
needs of both when planning DLV.
