Days until DLV:
>Well, one month down and only 11 to go to the next DLV. Who says
>obsession is a bad thing? :-)
Obsession can be good for you. :)
The waaaaaaaiting is the harrrrdest part. :)
And remember ...
<shamelessplug>Fall Harvest is only 4 months away!</shamelessplug>

A Dam Good Tour:
Roselinn has sent some excellent photos of the Hoover Dam tour. I've
got these on line with those I took a few years back.
Since there are a few in there showing people in boymode and such, I'm
not obviously linking to it or publishing the URL in the list.
If you would like to see it, please e-mail (just reply to this) and say
you would like the URL.
Thanks to Roselinn for the photos, and thanks again to De^H^HBob for
arranging the tour.

A new kind of web page:
We're getting more and more mail to the effect of "I'm going to be in
Las Vegas and I want to know where I can safely stay/play/shop/eat/party"
and such.
I've set up two pages and started some lists. I would appreciate if
you would look at these and send in any additions you may have, since
it's mostly places I've been.
General page is at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/lvthings.html
List of places is:

Limos:
>Say, have you ever thought of hiring a Limo to deliver the girls to
>the show or the club or something?
Yes, we looked into this in 1998 or 1999 (forget which). It was $35
per hour, iirc, plus tip and nuisance fees. I forget why this never
happened.

Hotel feedback:
>What's the chance of getting everybody all at the same place next year?
Uh, quite honestly, between slim and none, with Slim out of town.
>I'm sure there's some hotel manager who'd love to cut us a deal.
Here's an exercise for the student: Find any small to medium group
that plans a meeting or conference in Las Vegas and has negotiated
"Special Group Rates" at one or more hotels. Then compare these
<quote>Special</quote> rates to those offered by any travel agent
or ads in the Sunday papers such as the LA Times.
Then report back to the group on which is cheaper.
>It would be positively great to not have to worry about everyone
>showing up on time, or at all.
Yes, I agree it would be a good thing to have as many people together
as possible.
I'll say this again. If anybody has any connections or insider info on
one of the major hotels, and can arrange a true "deal" on room rates,
please let us know.
This year, some people took advantage of a special rate from Hilton and
others took advantage of another deal through a travel agent. These are
probably as good as we can do, as a group our size with no significant
gaming history.
>With things like StarDust or Imperial Palace, who could object? I've
>stayed at both and loved them both.
People who visit Las Vegas have very strong likes and dislikes. Plus,
those who regularly play at most casinos can get what's known as "Casino
Rate", which is almost always better than the best deal thru an
aggregator or travel agent.
Some people will not stay places for social and political reasons. Again
this year, I received a note from one of the people on the list warning
about the reputation of one of our recommended hotels. This was one of
the very few items I did not send on to the list. I simply sent a brief
and polite note to the sender saying we had declared that subject to be
off-topic back in 1998 or so.

Feedback:
>First of all, sorry this is so late. I've been so busy since I got
>back I just couldn't find the time.
Well, better late than never. The feedback is appreciated.
>>Overall, I think things went very well for the most part. Everybody
>>seemed to take the "dress down" request seriously, and I think that
>>helped keep our event free of major incidents again.
>Well, over all, it was Awesome! I had the time of my life!
>Thank you again and again.
You're welcome again and again. :)
Glad you had the time of your life. :)
>I wore slacks and a blouse most of the time. I didn't feel over or
>under dressed at all.
And, that type of outfit is quite appropriate for just about anything
in Las Vegas.
>>One couple got a cold response from one of the recommended vendors.
>>I spoke to the person who recommended this, and she was very surprised
>>and said she would talk to the contact person, who was out of town
>>for the DLV period.
>Annie, was this the shoe shop you talked about. I was going to go over
>there until you told us the story.
No it was not. I dunno if anybody visited NYC Shoes this year.
>I won't take up your space about things I didn't go to, just the ones
>I did.
>>What: Welcome get-together.
[chomp]
>>As with the other years, this turned out quite well, both in terms of
>>turnout and enthusiasm. No complaints, everybody had a good time that
>>I heard.
>This was super! Not really that exciting you could say, but enjoyable
>and easy. Nice place there.
This has always worked out very well. It's a nice low-key place, and very
appropriate for a first coming-out or for somebody who's been going out
for years.
>I was very surprised and amused by the variety in what people wore.
>Everything from bluejeans to fancy dresses.
Yes, this is a place where anything from casual to dressy is appropriate.
>>What: La Cage (Frank Marino Show).
[snip]
>>I enjoyed the show, even though this is the 4th year in a row I've seen
>>it with the DLV group. I thought the seats were much better than we had
>>the past couple years, although it still was a bit cramped.
>Good show! Good view! Good seats!
For the most part I agree. The seats were some of the better ones in that
showroom, but still not the most comfortable, imao.
>>There were a few issues reported here. One of our people lost a book in
>>the ladies room, there was a complaint of a discourteous bartender, and
>>reports of catcalls in the lounge and in the parking garage.
>Well, I didn't see any of that. Had a perfectly enjoyable time!
I didn't see it either, but unfortunately, doodoo happens.
>>I think that if we get that many people in that fancy a mode of dress in
>>any one place, yes, it will attract attention. I think the attention was
>>more due to the mode of dress than to the fact of who we are.
>I feel the dressing up added to the whole feeling of this. This is one
>thing I live to do.
And that's one reason we do have a couple dress-up evenings each year.
>Now, a few more comments here. No, I didn't go to everything. And no,
>I didn't feel I wasted any of the weekend. On Saturday I just walked
>around in the shops at Bally's and Ceasar's, had breakfast at the
>Flamingo, all en-femme. Played slots at Flamingo, Bally's, Belaggio,
>and that place on the corner. Had a nap, then ate dinner at the buffet
>downstairs, which was really good, but not really worth the money.
Great! I love it when somebody goes off and does something like this and
brings back positive reports.
>I wish I knew where you all were going to eat, I would of joined you.
>There was still plenty of time before the show.
I thought I passed the word the night before. I know I mentioned it on
the mailing list. You should have phoned or paged. :)
>Sunday I had breakfast buffet at the Imperial and it was absolutely
>awful! I'll never go there again! I was hoping to run into some of you
>all there but I didn't. Then I had to get changed and packed and checked
>out and on the way.
Hmmmmm, was this the big buffet, or the smaller buffet by the coffee
shop? I've eaten in the coffee shop several times, both off the menu and
from the buffet. Never had a bad meal there. It's not haute cuisine by
any means, but certainly not bad.
>Now in conclusion, a hale and hearty THANK YOU again for all you did
>to put this trip together. I wish I could remember the others who
>helped you and I could thank them personally.
You're very welcome once again. Thank you for the feedback.

>>
>>Most important, everybody was friendly and funloving. I have yet to
>>hear any reports of anybody not having a good time. :)
>If I may say something here. I feel the most important thing is just
>the ability for you to get out and be yourself. It doesn't matter
>what you do, just so you enjoy it.
>What's real important is to take something that you used to feel

Very well said! :)
>>What: Mary Kay Open House
[bobbitt]
>>I had expected a larger turnout, according to the responses on the
>>mail-in requests, but we did have a number of people there. I think
>>the Mary Kay ladies were satisfied with the turnout and the sales,
>Can I make a suggestion here.
>Don't have this before the big crowd of

>about the time you were finishing up with it.
We'll keep this in mind for next year. We may have to push forward the
official "start" of DLV to Thursday due to this and other things. We
found out that things like this do not work after the big weekend, and
I doubt if Saturday afternoon (when everybody wants to be out doing
things like shopping and sightseeing) would work either.
One thing we will have to discuss on dlvorg is the whole subject of
scheduling. Although nobody said they were bored, things did wind down
quite significantly after Sunday evening. One option may be to slide
the whole thing forward a day, Thursday thru Monday. For many years,
Fall Harvest has started on Thursday and that has worked quite well.

Hilton feedback:
>>>Some of the girls from Arizona stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton. We
>>>asked for the Spring Special which was $49.00 a night. That is very
>>>reasonable for Las Vegas.
>>That is a good price, especially on the weekends. I take it there were
>>no hassles or incidents there, correct?
>I didn't have any hassles or incidents at the Las Vegas Hilton. In
>fact, I went to the Roulette tables a couple of times and played the
>game. Some customer started talking to me during the game. No one
>asked me to leave.
And they had no reason to ask you to leave. As long as you were behaving
as a lady or gentleman, you were a valued customer there, and you were
treated as such.
It's ironic that the only place where anybody got a hint that they were
second-class customers was at a place alleged to be GLBT-friendly. :(

In defense of Southern Comfort:
>>>I've looked at going to other events(Southern Comfort, Fallharvest,
>>>ect...) and don't think I would care to goto any of them.
>>I will say that if you're looking for another thing like DLV, SC and
>>FH will not be one of them.
>In defense of Southern Comfort Conference, you are correct in saying
>that SCC is not like DLV. On the other hand, SCC does offer some
>wonderful tours of Atlanta. This is good especially for that
>"first-timer" who needs others with them to go out in public. At my
>first SCC event I took the tour to Lenox Mall and The Coca Cola Museum.
>These tours gave me confidence to venture out more on my own for
>shopping and things of that nature. Tours also include a visit to the
>CNN building and the Botanical Gardens.
I'm not trying to put down Southern Comfort (or Fall Harvest or Fanfair
or ...) I was trying to emphasize that if somebody goes to one of those
expecting the same atmosphere as DLV, they may be disappointed.
>Southern Comfort Conference is probably one the most organized tg events
>in this country. I know some of the girls that work all year to plan
>and organize all of the functions that take place at SCC. Their
>numbers in attendance grows every year. It's a wonderful event,
>especially the Saturday night event where all the girls are in their
>finest evening dresses.
Southern Comfort does appear to be one of the more popular and more
consistent of the t* conventions.
For somebody who is totally new to going out in public, I admit
something like one of the mainline t* conventions might be a bit
more appropriate and would offer a greater degree of security than
would DLV.
However, each year now, we've had people who have had their big
coming-out at DLV, and reported they enjoyed doing so in a
real-world atmosphere.
>DLV and SCC are two different kinds of events, both successful in their
>own right. I've attended SCC three years in a row and would go again
>this year if time allowed me. I will make plans to attend DLV next
>year if time allows me.
Hopefully time will allow you. :)
Good thing about DLV is that you're free to participate as little or as
much as your personal schedule allows.
>Speaking of time, it was very difficult to be off having fun and having
>to return home late on "Mother's Day." I know it's difficult to
>appease everyone on a particular weekend. Please keep that in mind for
>next year's DLV.
This is one of many factors that will have to be considered for the
scheduling of DLV 2001. I'm sure this will be discussed on the dlvorg
list again this year. If you want to review last year's discussion on
this topic, the dlvorg archives are at:
