Only 116 days left, gang!

Notes on this mailing:
There were some minor issues last week regarding the upgrade on the system
which hosts this list. One item that should have gone out in the last
issue was misplaced (it appears in this issue) and one change of address
did not get properly updated to the new system. This has been corrected.
Please accept my apology on these.

Airfare update:
Frontier and Sun Country are now showing $189 round trip to Las Vegas from
several cities. Checking with Travelocity, this price is REAL and DOES
cover the DLV period. From Omaha and Chicago, several other carriers are
meeting this price.
Southwest is hyping $99 each way ($198 rt) between most of the airports
they serve if booked by February 2. There are restrictions on which days
of the week you may fly at this price and not all flights may have seats
at this price.
Don't procrastinate, gang, this is about as low ...

Wig shop:
>Everything looks terrific.
Thanks. Things seem to be going well this year (almost scary). :)
>FYI-- In addition to makeovers there is a very TG friendly wig shop in
>Vegas. I have been there and all the women who work their are friendly
>and very helpful. It's called Vegas Girl Wigs. You may be familiar
>with it.
Yes I am. Although the person I knew there no longer works there, I keep
hearing very good reports. They actually have two locations, one on
Eastern Avenue (east of the Strip) and another in the Fantastic Indoor
Swap Meet on Decatur (west of the Strip).
We had some people visit the Eastern Ave. shop last year and reported a
very good experience.
>I mention this because we may have some girls attending who
>have been nervous about going to a wig store, and have always used mail
>order. I personally want to see what a style and color looks like on
>me before I buy it.
Thanks, and I tend to agree with you. It's my theory that the t* business
is vital to the success of any wig store, and that without it, they will
soon go broke.
Another one that our people have made good reports on is Serge's in
Commercial Center, just off Sahara (although I've never been there
myself). They have a regular shop and an "outlet" shop next door.

Mailbag:
>I hope I'm sendint this to the right place, I'm still new at all of
>this. I ran into Annie at a local place here and she gave me this
>mail address.
Well, since I (annie) moderate this list, it's safe to say you came
to the right place. :) Welcome!
>I'm interested in coming to your big shebang, but
>I'm a bit uncertain and I have a few questions.
>One, how much will this cost? I'm not poor by any means, but I'm not
>rich either.
This is discussed in some detail in the FAQ list at the following URL,
so I won't repeat it all here.
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2000/dlv2kfaq.html
There's also a link to a separate page which discusses making the most
of your $$$ at DLV, plus an example spreadsheet real-world bottom-dollar
budget for this year's event.
Getting a good air fare is one of the most important things to making
the trip affordable. Book early! (Book often :)
>Two, as I told Annie I've never been out before, and I
>want to know if there would be any problems if I would come and get
>scared and just wear boy-clothes. Is this a problem with you all?
No, no problem at all. Each year we've had people who have been in
boymode either part of the time or all the time. A few of the people
stayed in boymode during the day, and switched to girlmode in the
evening. You can be in one mode, the other, or both, depending on your
desire and comfort level.
>Thanks, and I find this idea very exciting.
You're welcome, I'm looking forward to it too. :)

Registration info:
>I'm planning to be in Las Vegas again this year for N+I and the DLV
>until Monday afternoon at the latest.
Great! Glad to have you with us again. :)
>Suggestion:
>When people respond with their attendance information maybe we could
>collect some details like:
>Name Michelle Jenkins
>Arrival (In LV) Date 4 May 2000
>Departure (From LV) Date 15 May 2000
>Attending N+I Yes
>DLV Thu Probably
>DLV Fri Yes
>DLV Sat Yes
>DLV Sun Yes
>DLV Mon Some
>DLV Tue Nope, gone!!
>Perhaps you could publish the template (Labels) in the newsletter making
>it easy for everyone to reply or even send out as separate item making
>it very easy for them to reply with information
Actually, I would be tickled pink if everybody who plans to attend would
simply send a brief note with when they plan to arrive, depart, hotel,
etc., somewhat in advance of the date. I'm willing to do the grunt work
of keeping this form of a list, as long as everybody sends in the info
in a human-readable form.
If people are willing to put it in this form, that would be better.
There are a few who have responded already with such things as hotel
info and flight numbers, but at this time, the majority who have
responded are still in the "maybe" or "definite maybe" categories.
Last year, I think we did very good, and the roster was probably about
80% complete in early April or so. The year before, 1998, most of the
definites came in within a month or so of show time.
I'll post a template here, and we can see how many responses we get.
I will remind everybody, I know it's still very early, but the sooner we
get this information, the sooner we can do headcount projections and
tentative rosters.
Please fill in the form below as appropriate and return via e-mail. You
mail mail to dlv2000@geekbabe.com or simply reply to this list. This will
help us better plan for DLV 2000. Thanks.

Flying vs. driving:
>Question, would you at all recomend driving your car instead of
>flying, both to save money, and to have a car when your there?
I think that depends on where you're coming from. If you're coming from
anyplace other than California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, etc., it
will most certainly be more economical to fly, and then rent a car if
you need one locally. (With RARE exception, somebody will be able to
give you a ride to all DLV function.)
If coming from LA, SD, Phoenix, etc., it's probably a tossup. We've had
people fly from the LA area just to save time and wear&tear on the car.
There is a perception that driving is cheaper than flying, and in many
cases, especially when Las Vegas is the destination, that is not true.
There are some exceptions, but you should be able to get rountrip air
from most major US airports for a $200-ish fare. In a few cases it may
pay to drive to another airport and fly from there (Buffalo and
Philadelphia come to mind). The cost of gas and incidentals on the road
can add up quickly to more than the price of a plane ticket. You also
have to consider your time. Yes, it has a real-dollar value to it. :)
Some people have inquired to Greyhound and Amtrak, and found them to
be about the same in price as airfare.
