Only 123 days left, gang!

Off to a good start ...
First, I would like to welcome those who just joined the mailing list.
We've gotten quite a bit of good exposure this first week. We are now
on the IFGE t* events calendar (thanks Stephanie) and a blurb in
alt.transgendered resulted in countless hits and quite a few queries.
Already the most common question is "How many people will be there?"
Answer for now is that it is far too early to even come up with some
kind of a guess.
When you decide you are likely to attend, please send in a brief note
to that effect (dlv2000@geekbabe.com or simply reply to this list).
That way we can start the tentative roster and be ready to do some
projections of headcount, which everybody seems to like. :)
(If you're one who is returning from the past years and already said
you will be attending this year, please send in a brief note to
"reconfirm" since I have not been keeping track of these.)
With all the activity so far, I think it's safe to say we will have a
somewhat larger crowd than last year, but just how large is yet to
be known.
This is also the time to be thinking about activities and events, and
filling the holes in the schedule. Take a look at the activity list
below, see if anything strikes your fancy, and let us know. If
something you would like to do is not on the list, please speak up.

Heads up:
The system which hosts this mailing list (and many others) had a major
upgrade this last week, with a new version of the OS and an updated
Majordomo list processor.
Please let us know if you see any problems with this list. If you send
anything that bounces with an error message, please forward it to:
annie@annie.net
Some of you may have gotten a truncated test version of this mailing.
Please accept my apology, it was supposed to have gone only to a test
list.

Golf:
>>I inquired to the local ladies about a golf outing, but did not get
>>much interest.
[chomp]
>You've got all kinds of courses. Green Fee's start something like $35
>if you're lucky, and go to over $100. I'm sending you the latest
>list of the open courses. Now I don't golf very often, but I have
>friends who do.
Thanks! :)
I'm placing this file on line at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2000/golf.gif
It's somewhat large, but quite readable.
If you're interested in a golf outing (we have it marked as a maybe for
Monday afternoon), please take a look at this. If anybody is familiar with
any of these courses, please share your opinions.

Hotels and such:
>Re hotels in LV, I have stayed on the Strip at Caesar's and Treasure
>Island, and gone out dressed from both hotels several times over the
>years. It is the usual crowd hassle of standing in long lines waiting
>for a taxi. Also, although I occasionally gamble enough to get some

>Since I (usually)

>admittedly can be lots of fun).
Actually, I admit I enjoy the atmosphere of the casino hotels, even the
moderate crowds. :)
>At DLV 99, I stayed in West LV at a LaQuinta Inn ($59 IIRC) just a block
>off the freeway and only about 5 blocks from Texas Station Casino. I
>got to all DLV events in less than 20 minutes because I skipped Strip

>So, I make this recommendation to girls looking for a place to stay.
This place is on what is now called the "Rancho Strip" area, northwest
of downtown. For those who do not want a casino hotel, La Quinta (and
the other national chains) are an option, and are almost always nice.
For those of you concerned about hotel room price, you will see Strip
hotel rooms often quoted in the $70-$100 per night range, but discounts
and specials are almost always available. There is what many consider
to be a room "glut" on the Strip. As the time approaches, we will
follow such things as the LA Times specials, etc. Sahara, Stratosphere,
Circus Circus, and Palace Station will almost always have rooms in the
$40-ish range. Stardust and IP will not be much higher. Downtown hotels
will be somewhat lower.

Frontier to close:
>Just in case you don't know, you probably don't want any of your
>people to reserve here, it may not be there.
>>Real estate developer Phil Ruffin said today he plans to
>>implode his New Frontier hotel-casino on the Las Vegas
>>Strip and replace it with a $700 million San
>>Francisco-themed resort.
>>
>>Two years after spending $165 million to acquire the
>>aging, 1,000-room hotel-casino, Ruffin has decided to
>>raze the structure and replace it with a sparkling new
>>property called "City by the Bay."
[bobbitt]
Thanks for the note. I think we had somebody stay there last year, but
as the included item says, it may not be around for this year's DLV.
