I guess dates should be added to the mailing list, I kind of assumed
everybody knew.
Officially (if there is such a thing) DLV runs from Friday evening, May
14, thru Tuesday, May 18th. Of course, you are free to join us any time
and leave any time if you can't make the entire period. Most of the big
activities will happen over the weekend.

Sahara info and feedback:
>How is the Sahara Hotel? Is it nice or a dump? I'm thinking of
>staying there.
Definitely not a dump. One of the true classic Strip hotels, and one of
a dying breed. I haven't stayed there, but I know it's having a total
remodel.
Here's some feedback that came in about it ...
>I've just booked myself into the Sahara for two nights (the 16th and
>17th) for $49 + tax each night. That rate is for the 27 story tower.
>The 14 story tower is going for $39 + tax per night. The reservation
>clerk said they have more available both smoking and non-smoking rooms.
>
>All rooms have been renovated in both towers and are very nice. The 27
>story tower has better access to the self-parking lot which means those
>of us who would prefer not to enter and exit through the casino have
>that option.
I have eaten there, and the buffet, while not spectacular, is good and
very reasonable.
>$39 dollars sounds too good to be true. Is it real?
I'm sure this will be the real-world rate for Sunday, Monday, and
Tuesday of the DLV period in the smaller tower, as stated above. I
think we can assume that the rooms in the taller (and more expesive)
tower will be a bit nicer. Although the LA Times ad does not say that
weekends and convention periods are higher, they may be. Phone the
hotel and ask.

Room rate phun:
>Your right, they do
>gouge people who don't reserve beforehand.
[chomp]
>My boss went to Vegas over Easter week. Luck him, I had to stay back
>and answer his phone and mail too. He liked it so much he wanted to
>stay 2 more days and see a show and drive back on Sunday instead
>of Friday. He paid $59 each day, but when he extended the stay,
>they made him pay $125 for the extra days EACH.
This may or may not actually be gouging, since weekends (Fri Sat) are
almost always more expensive than weekdays, but it is a very steep
increase, more than 2:1. Plus, the $59 could have been a promotional
deal.
What hotel was this? $125 is not really out of line for a weekend night
at many of the nicer places. Reserving in advance could have at least
eliminated the sticker shock.
This is one more example of what several people have reported when they
do not have reservations.

Continental is Closed:
As has been expected, the Continental Hotel and Casino closed its doors
on very short notice early this month. The note-holders have not
announced any plans for the property. I don't think anybody from our
group had reservations there, but do be advised, since they advertise
some very attractive prices.

Mailbag:
>I have my hotel reservations.
>Can I suggest that the next time you send out an update Email you
>include the suggestion that the "maybes" that hope to attend at least
>make their hotel/motel reservations. They can always cancel 48 hours
>prior to arrival, and it costs them nothing.
Uh, I've been trying to suggest that for the past few months, I'll let
you do it this time. :) :) :)
I do know one person who came to DLV last year without reservations and
lucked out, getting a better rate at the IP than somebody who had
reserved in advance, but, IMAO, that would be quite risky this year.
>I am staying at Comfort Inn on Koval. $42/ for every day of the week.
That's a good rate, especially for Friday and Saturday. For those who
don't know the area, this is off- Strip, but not that far from the
center of things.
>Also, it is easier to stay at a motel, and come and go dressed than for
>some girls to dress and have to walk through a casino lobby all by
>themselves.
That is a good point, especially if the rooms open directly to outside.
