Headcount:

This is still by far the most frequently asked question. Lately I
haven't copied these to the list, but replied with a boilerplate "too
soon to tell" note and a rough guess, as some of you know.

As it stands we now have 31 "definites" on the list. This counts those
who have stated they will be there for at least some of the time, and
have not said anything to the contrary. I'm not counting a few of the
LV locals who I kind of assume will be with us for part of the time,
and I may be missing some friends and SO's too. We still have quite a
few who "might show up", "will try to make it", etc.

Most will arrive in time for the Friday evening get-together, which
will probably be the most-attended event. Some will be arriving
Saturday, and two on Sunday.

If history repeats, we will have a few more definites over the next two
weeks, a few cancellations, a few who show up without any previous
notice (this is cool), and a few no-shows.

Rate updates:

We're gettin down to the wire, gang, and many places are full. I just
made a quick check of some of those we've been discussing ...

Silverton (waaayyyyyy south on the Strip) seems to be bottom dollar of
all the nice places that have rooms available for the DLV period at
$79/$39 weekend/weekday. Frontier (north strip) is not too bad at
$89/$49. Sahara is still advertising their $39 price, but that is for
the older smaller tower, and is most likely higher weekends.

Many properties are now showing sold out for at least one night of the
DLV weekend.

Las Vegas Reservation Systems (www.lvrs.com) is an agency/broker who
books for many of the properties in the area. You can phone them at
800-233-5594. They show availability for a number of properties they
book for, very few of them inexpensive, however.

Hotel Discounts (www.hoteldiscounts.com) is showing sold out for all
Las Vegas properties they book for.

For last-minute reservations (like from now until DLV) it might be best
to phone the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reservation
line at 800-332-5333. They know who has unsold rooms for upcoming dates
and can enter the reservation for you in most cases.

Please avoid the following properties unless you are VERY brave:
Western Hotel and Casino (Westward Ho, similar name, is acceptable),
Nevada Hotel (small hotel downtown, many decent places with similar
names), Aztec Inn (strip), Thunderbird (this used to be the name of a
classy Strip joint), Bonanza Inn (the local t* group sometimes rents
their meeting rooms, but still, I would not feel safe there).

Mailbag:

>I agree that Main St. is pretty run down. But I think it is safe in
>the daytime.

>However, the thrift shops there are nothing to brag about.

>There are better thrift shops on the Boulder Hwy., and on East
>Charlston.

>I also recommend motels for coming and going dressed.

Mailbag (Bellagio):

>Just to let you know. There are a lot of "High Slots" at the Belagio.
>When I was there last week, we found a good selection of 25 cent
>machines. You have to walk around to find them or ask, but they do
>have them. In fact my wife and I hit for almost $300.00 while we were
>there..

>Be looking forward to seeing every one soon :))

Yep, I'm looking forward to seeing everybody too :)

Don't dream it, be it:

>>Oh, and if you're dying to wear something really exotic in public and
>>have never had the chance, ANYTHING GOES for appropriate dress for
>>RHPS. You'll see many who dress as characters, but you will see all
>>kinds of different outfits.
[munch]
>>>Rice [uncooked]
>>>Rice is thrown right as Ralph and Betty are leaving the church. As the
>>>guests on the screen throw rice (uncooked), you should too.

>>>Bouquet [flowers]
>>>Throw toward screen when Betty throws hers. Aim for whoever plays Janet
>>>in the cast or somebody dressed like Janet.

>Is this a wedding scene? Can I be a Bride?

Yes and yes! Rocky Horror Picture Show begins with a wedding. In the
local casts, it's not always a gg who plays Betty Monroe, the bride.
I've also seen audience members as Betty Monroe as well. Go4it if you
wanna!

I take it you have never seen the film. This brings on a whole new
meaning to the term "virgin bride". :) :)

(Under the circumstances, formal dress is to be ... OPTIONAL!)

More Rocky:

>>RHPS. You'll see many who dress as characters, but you will see all
>>kinds of different outfits.

>I've seen this many years ago, but forgot most if it. Can you please
>refresh me and name some of the characters that are easy to go as?

I would recommend you check out some of the web sites such as
http://www.midnightinsanity.com for some pics and costume hints. Here's
an overview of some of the characters and some notes on what you can do
quickly and reasonably.

Dr Frank-n-Furter (a scientist)
Brad Majors (a hero)
Janet Weiss (a heroine)
Rocky Horror (a creation)
Riff-Raff (a handyman)
Magenta (a domestic)
Columbia (a groupie)
Eddie (an ex delivery boy)
Dr Scott (a rival scientist)
The Criminologist (a criminologist)
Trixie (usherette, in stage play, not in the film)

Frank's costume (Transvestite from Transylvania) is somewhat elaborate,
with corset, fishnets, platform shoes, cape, etc. Makeup is very goth-y.
I've seen some people "cheat" by doing Frank wearing surgical scrubs
and the makeup only.

Brad and Janet are the straight (yeah, right) couple. Janet is usually
seen in a violet dress with white hat. She also appears in a white bra
and white (torn) slip. She wears the corset/fishnets/heels for the
floor show. Some cast people have made Janet outfits that are accurate
to the last button.

Magenta can be done using a common French maid costume (carrying a dark
feather duster) and goth-y makeup. I've seen some people cheat and do
Magenta (and Columbia) with a baggy t-shirt or jammies and Mickey Mouse
Club ears. Magenta's costume at the end is quite elaborate.

Columbia's costume is very elaborate, with sequin tailcoat and gold top
hat. She also wears the corset/fishnets/heels in the floor show. Short
red hair and racing-stripe makeup.

Betty Monroe appears only in the opening scenes as the bride.

There are also various Transylvanians, wedding guests, etc.

Trixie, the usherette, appeared in the stage play but does not in the
film. Some local casts include this character.

As I've said before, ANYTHING goes as far as appropriate wear to a
Rocky Horror Picture Show screening.
