Only 9 days left, gang!

This may or may not be the last general-interest mailing to the DLV99
mailing list. I was gonna wait until Thursday or Friday or so to send
this out, but a lot of material has come in over the past few days.

If you have anything else that should be shared with the group, please
send it in ASAP.

There will be a large mailing this weekend of a detailed schedule,
directions to various events, and all kinds of important and trivial
stuff.

For the most part, things are looking good. I'm very much looking
forward to meeting everybody in person next week.

Mailbag:

>Also, a question. The schedule of events does not seem to include any
>nightlife until Monday. Are there plans to go to clubs (dancing) prior
>to Monday?

This is an option any evening. It's assumed that most will not want to
attend all of the scheduled production shows (look for another note
below) so that will give some free time.

Last year most of the group gravitated to the Keys after the major
events. Dancing would be an alternative to this for those who would
rather dance than hang out at a piano bar. A dance club might also be
an appropriate option for Friday after the get-together.

You might ask at the welcome get-together if anybody else is interested
in going dancing later that evening.

We'll be giving out a list of the local clubs. Right now some of those
who are local to LV are looking this over and making corrections.

Pre-DLV get-together (Thursday):

We've had suggestions of Gypsy (dance bar) and Keys (piano lounge) for
this. These are quite different, and rather than me arbitrarily picking
one, lemme propose this:

Let's meet at Good Times about 8:00pm and have a drink and a chat. This
is a (usually) quiet bar that is very easy to find and t-friendly. If
we then want to move on to Gypsy or Keys (or some to both) in a while,
depending on everybody's mood, then that will be fine. Gypsy is not too
far away. Keys is several miles, but not that far.

This is at the intersection of Tropicana and Spencer in the strip mall
right across from the Liberace Museum. Very detailed directions will
come out in the large mailing at the end of the week.

I'll be sure to be there by 8:00pm at the latest. For those who do not
know me by sight, I'll kinda keep an eye open for those who appear to
be looking for somebody.

Air and hotel:

7 day in advance prices (including special $198 fares via Southwest,
Delta, and others who have matched) expire Friday!

If you haven't yet made reservations, but want to attend, there is
still time, but ....

You will be able to still find air travel and hotel rooms, but they
will not be at favorable rates. Please heed the numerous warnings to be
sure you have a confirmed hotel reservation! Confiscatory and extortive
walk-in rates have been reported.

For air, contact a travel agent who writes for multiple airlines and
ask what they can do for you. Another option is www.priceline.com,
but I have yet to hear from anybody who has actually gotten what they
want at a good price from these guys.

For hotel rooms, the best option from now until next week is probably
to phone the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reservation
line at 800-332-5333. They know who has unsold rooms for upcoming dates
and can enter the reservation for you in most cases.

Airport pickup:

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED A PICKUP AT THE AIRPORT AND HAVE NOT
RECEIVED A BRIEF NOTE FROM ME CONFIRMING DATE/TIME/FLIGHT ETC.

To be sure I'm not missing anybody, I've sent a brief e-mail note to
all those I've got on my list who needs a ride from the airport,
confirming date, flight, etc.

If you need a ride from the airport, and you haven't received one of
these, please accept my apology, and please send an e-mail note back to
me (a return message to the list will be fine, or annie@annie.net) with
the following info:

1. Date/time
2. Airline
3. Flight number

I'll try to meet you right at your gate. However, if I should be a bit
late (and your flight is on time), I'll meet you just outside the bag
claim area for your airline.

For those who don't know me by sight, I'll be holding a sign that says
"DLV" in big letters. (Galakewicz :)

If we should miss each other, I will try to house-page you under the
name I know you best. You can also phone or page me.

If you should happen to miss a connecting flight, and will be coming in
on another one (this happened in 1997, and thanks to Wendy for noticing
my typo), please phone or page me as soon as you know your new flight
information. (Numbers will appear in the large mailing toward the end
of this week.)

Shows and such:

(somewhat edited for brevity)

>>* Boylesque (Kenny Kerr) Saturday evening, 8:00pm
>and
>>* Rocky Horror Picture Show. Saturday night, 12:00 midnight
>and
>>* La Cage (Frank Marino Show) Sunday evening, 9:30pm
>and
>>* Legends In Concert, Monday May 17, Imperial Palace (mid Strip)
>and
>>* Forever Plaid, Tuesday May 18, Flamingo. (mid Strip)

>Isn't this just a bit much, shows that is?

All the above (actually everything on the schedule) are simply
suggestions and everything is optional. You don't have to attend
anything you don't want to. Personally, I doubt if I'll make all four
production shows, though I'm kinda committed to those on Saturday and
Sunday evenings, plus RHPS. (The couple who had Forever Plaid on their
"must do" list and suggested it to the group has cancelled, so we may
or may not have a group going to that. It is still an option.)

>I don't know if I can afford that many.

You don't have to. :)

Actually, these are all very reasonably priced compared to many of the
headline shows in LV.

>I don't see any plans for free time, for shopping and gambling and
>things like that. Did you think of this?

It's up to everybody to budget their time between things on the
schedule and optional things. Remember, not everybody is gonna want to
do everything, and not everybody will want to do the same things at the
same times.

One of our people has stated that she simply wants to "... hang out at
NYNY and Caesar's for a day or so ..." This is certainly an option.

If some of the things don't interest you, like tours and shows, there
will be free time in the afternoons and evenings. Also, there's nothing
scheduled for the mornings, so this may be a time to get in such things
as gaming and shopping.

Mailbag:

>I not a local from Las Vegas, but I did go to Serge's Wigs. I was not
>dressed up as a woman but I did show the saleslady a couple of my
>pictures. She was very helpful. She put me in a private booth and
>helped me with my selection of wigs. Because of the amount of money I
>paid she also threw in a couple of freebie items.

I've wondered about that place, but never went there, or never knew
anybody who did. (It's my theory that any wig shop that is not
t-friendly will shortly go out of business. :)

For those who don't know what we're talking about, Serge's Wigs
advertises heavily in the LV area. Their shop, and an adjoining "wig
outlet", is in the Commercial Center on Sahara close to the Keys and
the Spotlight Lounge.

Good to know that you had a good experience there. Thanks. :)

Mailbag:

>This is a longshot. Down in Florida, a couple of the hotels have
>Internet in hotel rooms with kind of a Web-TV box with a real clumsy
>keyboard remote control thing. Do youknow of any of these in Vegas?

I have no idea. I've never seen anything like this, although I see
how it might be a nice service to offer guests. (My guess, though,
is that in LV, the hotel wants you downstairs playing, rather than
upstairs surfing. :)

I'll send this on to the list. Maybe somebody else knows.
