Subject: dlv99 Lots of information and stuff ...
From: Annie (annie )
Date: Sat May 08 1999 - 00:08:03 CST

(This mailing will not be archived on line.)

This will be the last major item on the DLV 99 mailing list. Sent
along with this list will be two additional items, a list of known
t-friendly vendors of all types, and a list of t-friendly clubs.

Only other items will be any important news or updates. If there are
any last minute schedule changes (this happened in 1998) I will post
them to this list as well as attempt to contact everybody in LV.

This one will be long, and there's lots of "The World According To
Ms. R." in it, but I hope it's informative.

If you don't wanna read the whole thing, please be sure to skim the
major headings and make note of items that interest you.

If you haven't made reservations yet, and would still like to attend,
there is time. (Please, gang, be sure you have a confirmed hotel
reservation before you travel. I don't wanna see you pay last-minute
walk-in rates that some have been reporting.)

All you really have to do is to show up at the Friday evening welcome
get-together. If you're there, you're included. :)

If you are on a tight schedule, and would like to participate for part
of the time, that's fine.

If you're uneasy about joining us, keep reading. :)
. . . . .

First of all, please read the following paragraphs, especially if
you're feeling a bit uneasy or uncertain about the upcoming weekend:

At every T* event I've ever attended, there's always been one or more
"no-shows". These are people who have registered for the event, paid
for travel and accommodations, but simply decided at the last minute
not to go to the event. I've spoken to a number of these people, and in
most cases, simple uneasiness and uncertainty caused them to, for lack
of a better term, "chicken out" at the last moment.

It's natural to feel uneasy when you travel to unfamiliar places, to
meet people you do not know or do not know very well. It's also natural
to feel uneasy when people have been telling you all your life that it
is *wrong* to feel and behave in the manner we do.

All of us have at times felt this way, I certainly know I have. :)

If you're uneasy to the point of considering bailing out, please keep
in mind that the group you will be joining wants you there, and will go
out of their way to help you feel comfortable. I know a number of the
people who will be there personally, and I can assure you that of those
I know, there is not a single jerk among them. They are very caring and
funloving individuals. We want to include you in our circle of
friendship for this very special weekend.

If you have never appeared in public, or are uneasy about doing so,
remember that we want you there in any shape or form you are in. If you
would rather stay in one mode for a while, and perhaps try the other
after you get to know everybody better, that's cool. If you want to
stay in boymode all weekend, that's cool too, as long as you're
comfortable with it.

If you're still uncertain and you would like to talk about it, write me
back. If you would rather talk one-to-one, page me, evenings are best,
the number is posted below, and I'll phone you back at my expense.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Airport pickup:

To be sure I'm not missing anybody, I've sent a brief e-mail note to
all those I've got on my list who needs a ride from the airport,
confirming date, flight, etc.

If you need a ride from the airport, and you haven't received one of
these, please send an e-mail note back to me (a return message to the
list will be fine, or annie@annie.net) with the following info:

1. Date/time
2. Airline
3. Flight number

I'll try to meet you right at your gate. However, if I should be a bit
late (and your flight is on time), I'll meet you just outside the bag
claim area for your airline.

For those who don't know me by sight, I'll be holding a sign that says
"DLV" in big letters. (Galakewicz :)

If we should miss each other, I will try to house-page you under the
name I know you best. You can also phone or page me.

If you should happen to miss a connecting flight, and will be coming in
on another one (this happened in 1997), please phone or page me as soon
as you know your new flight information.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Making contact:

The best way to make contact with the group is to simply show up at the
welcome get-together on Friday evening. Please try to show up between
7:00pm and 8:00pm.

This will be held at the Good Times Lounge in the strip mall at the
intersection of Tropicana and Spencer, directly across from the
Liberace Museum. Directions are posted below. I will be there shortly
before 7:00pm at the latest. If the group is not obvious to you, look
for me, and I'll be keeping an eye out for anybody who appears to be
looking for somebody. If you don't know me by sight, I am about 5'6
tall, dark brown hair, and I'll most likely be wearing a blue t-shirt
with the Diva Las Vegas logo on it. Just come up and introduce
yourself, I don't bite. :)

Yes, this place is very t-friendly. I and many of the others have been
there many times. Come as brother or sister, whichever you prefer.
We'll introduce ourselves, relax, and anticipate the goings on for the
rest of the time.

Need a ride? e-mail, phone, or page me. (Numbers posted below.)

Running late? I'll be sure that somebody from the group is at the Good
Times until 10:00pm or so. There's a very good chance that part or all
of the group will move on to another location as the night progresses,
so please phone or page if you're going to be later than 10:00pm or so.

If you miss the welcome get-together, phone or page as soon as you can.
Please feel free to phone or page me up until 1:00am or so on Friday
evening/Saturday morning. After that, please wait until about 10:00am
Saturday morning to phone or page unless it's urgent.

Directions:

Good Times Lounge is at 1775 East Tropicana. This is right across from
the Liberace Museum in the strip mall on the southwest corner of the
intersection of Tropicana and Spencer. Look for the Liberace Museum,
it, like its namesake, is very conspicuous. :)

To get to Good Times from McCarran Airport, take Swenson St. (plainly
marked as you exit the airport) to Tropicana. Turn right (east) on
Tropicana, which is the first major intersection after you leave the
airport. Good times will be on your right, on the south side of the
street. (If you should make a mistake and go through the tunnel, don't
panic, keep going. Follow signs to I-15 north, get off at the Tropicana
exit. Go right (east) on Tropicana past the Strip, Paradise, and
Swenson.)

If coming by taxi, most drivers will know the Good Times Lounge on
Tropicana. If he/she doesn't recognize it, mention the Liberace Museum.
If he/she does not recognize THAT, you landed at the wrong airport. :)

To get to Good Times from most Strip hotels, take Paradise Road, just
east of the Strip (you CAN take Las Vegas Blvd, but it is terribly
congested evenings) south to Tropicana. Turn left (east) on Tropicana.
Good times will be on your right, on the south side of the street in
the strip mall by Liberace Museum.

To get to Good Times from Downtown, take I-15 south to the Tropicana
exit. Take Tropicana east. Good times will be on your right, on the
south side of the street in the strip mall by Liberace Museum.

To get to Good Times from Boulder Strip, first take Boulder Highway
north or south (depending on your location) to Tropicana. Turn west
on Tropicana.

Contacting YOU:

Although I have a fairly complete list of who is attending, and where
everybody is staying, etc., I do not have enough information to contact
many of you should there be a short-notice schedule change or anything
important. Last year one of the production shows had just changed
schedule, and was one hour earlier than originally scheduled. Not
everybody got the word on it.

This is strictly voluntary ... If you want to be sure the group can get
in contact with you in case of something important, please send me a
brief e-mail with the following:

. Where you will be staying
. Phone number (if it's a major hotel, I already have it)
. Who should I ask for
(Many hotels will not complete a phone call to a room number.)

Of course, this info will be kept strictly confidential.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Schedule of events:

This year at DLV it appears we will have more than twice the crowd we
had in 1998. Therefore, we are going to have to formalize the schedule
a bit, and everybody will have to cooperate to insure all of us get the
most out of the weekend.

Please accept my apology in advance if I become assertive to the point
of being pushy, or even bitchy, if necessary, to keep everyone moving
and on time. The Las Vegas world will not slow down to let someone
catch up!

Each of these are strictly optional. You are free to do as few or as
many of these as you wish.

Headcounts:

Please become familiar with the planned activities and which ones you
want to attend. Headcounts will be taken beginning Friday evening.
Please be sure you are counted for each of the following you will be
attending:

* Saturday Noon, Driving/walking tour of Strip.
* Saturday evening, Boylesque (Kenny Kerr).
* Sunday afternoon, Hoover Dam tour.
* Sunday evening, La Cage (Frank Marino).
* Monday evening, Legends In Concert.
* Tuesday evening, Forever Plaid.

If you know you will be missing the Friday get-together and want to
attend the Saturday events, please e-mail me in advance. Please give
the number of people you are counting for (so's etc.).

Bibi {sniff, sob}
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Ok, in this next part, you'll get lots of "World According To Ms. R."
stuff. :) If you're a LV local, you can probably skip the majority of
it.

Hints for making the most of Diva Las Vegas:

Dress down! Casual is the norm for daytime wear in Las Vegas. (Yes, you
can dress **UP** in the evening. :)

Wear comfortable shoes !!! You WILL be spending considerable time on
your feet.

The Las Vegas sun can be very hot, even in the spring. Highs in the
90's are common in mid-May. Evenings vary from moderately warm to cool.
Keep this in mind when planning your wardrobe.

If you haven't been out in public much, carry a bail-out kit in your
car, consisting of such things as a change of outer clothing (jeans and
t-shirt, wet washcloth, dry towel, tennis shoes, nail polish remover,
etc.)

Obey traffic laws to the letter, even when on foot. Tickets for
pedestrian infractions such as jaywalking, while not frequent, are
given occasionally in the Las Vegas area.
..........

Tempus Fugit

Las Vegas is on Pacific Daylight Time.

In Las Vegas, it is very easy to lose track of time. Seldom if ever
will there be a clock in a hotel lobby or casino. The pace of
activities makes it very easy to become disoriented as far as time is
concerned.

Carry a watch!

Also keep in mind that such activities as walking to your car, finding
a restroom, returning to your hotel room for "just a minute", waiting
for the server to bring your drink, etc., will consume more time than
you think. It's VERY easy to get behind and run late.

Shows, tours, meetings, and other activities always start on time.

Production shows will often request that you be at the box office or
theater one hour before show time. Experience has shown that 1/2 hour
is adequate, but you should be there no later than 1/2 hour before
show time.

Lines can be long and slow.

Hotel elevators can be slow (check-out time especially) and out of
service.

Valet parking pick-up is usually prompt, but can be very slow at peak
times, like just after a production show lets out.

Traffic on the Strip is frequently very heavy and slow. Use Industrial
Road just west of the Strip, and Paradise Road just east of the Strip,
or I-15 if Strip traffic is slow. Avoid Industrial Road just south of
the Mirage right after a heavy rain.

Allow plenty of time when getting ready for and traveling to scheduled
events. Allow about four hours of get-ready-and-get-there time before
any dress-up event. For example, if the show starts at 8:00pm, you
should wind up your afternoon activities no later than 4:00pm. I know
this may sound like a bit much, but it's quite realistic.
..........

(T)o (I)nsure (P)roper (S)ervice

A smile goes a long way. :)

In Las Vegas, a buck goes a lot farther, and brings on smiles. $ :) $

If you establish a reputation as a generous tipper, you will certainly
be treated as the lady (or gentleman) you are.

For those unfamiliar with Las Vegas customs, tips are expected in many
cases, and they work wonders in obtaining fast and personal service.

TIPS ARE NOT MANDATORY. IF YOU RECEIVE RUDE OR SHODDY SERVICE FROM
ANYONE, DO NOT TIP AND LET MANAGEMENT KNOW YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH
THE SERVICE. Your dress and lifestyle should have nothing to do with
the degree of service you should expect and receive!

The usual rules of tipping people such as servers, bartenders, bell
persons, etc. apply in Las Vegas in most cases. The one exception is
that in most casinos, drinks (alcoholic or non) are on the house, and
servers will circulate and take drink orders. If you tip a buck a round
(or around a buck :), you will find that the servers will be back more
frequently and will fill your order more enthusiastically, than if you
do not tip.

In showrooms where tickets are not marked "gratuity included", it is
usually necessary to tip (bribe) to obtain a good seat. Those who tip
either the Maitre'd or the Captain (usher) around $10 or so per couple
can usually get center seats with a good view. Those who do not find
themselves in the nosebleed section. Many showrooms have done away with
this system, and issue reserved seats with gratuities included in the
ticket price. (This is usually opposed bitterly by the showroom staff.)
In this case, you will be shown to your marked seats and no tip is
necessary. Note that in most showrooms, the first row of booths is
normally reserved by the casino management for high rollers, and these
are not available to the general public without a VERY large tip, if at
all.

For the production shows that we will attend that have Maitre'd
Seating, we will pass the hat for a bri^H^H^Htip to assure good seats.

It is customary to tip dealers of table games when on a winning streak.
A chip of the denomination you are playing is usually sufficient. Some
players place a side bet for the dealer, with the winnings, if any,
going to the dealer. Most casinos allow this. Some do not.

If you hit a large slot payoff that requires a hand-paid jackpot, it
is customary to tip the attendant. A tip of 5% or so of your winnings,
within reason of course, will most likely be adequate.

It is against Gaming Commission regulations for employees to "hustle
tips" or encourage them using any means other than good service. Some
employees in some of the less elegant properties in the downtown area
are notorious for ignoring this. Feel free to ignore them in the same
manner as they ignore the law!

If you use any of the free valet parking services at the casinos, tip
when you pick up your car. A tip when you drop off your car is not
expected. I usually tip $2 if the service is extremely prompt, $1 if it
is ok, and nothing if it is slow. Valet parking pickup is often slow
just after a production show has let out.

If any nonmanagement employee goes out of his/her way to help you, a
tip may be appropriate. I recently flipped a hotel desk clerk a $5 for
finding me a room "up high, facing the strip, near the elevator" during
a very busy and hectic check-in time. Use your judgement in cases like
this.

Thus Endeth the Sermon :)
..........

(If you're new to Las Vegas gaming and culture, you might find the
following useful. If you're an old hand, skip it, you've heard it
before.)

P-Town Annie's Facts and Fallacies about Gaming:

* The house ALWAYS comes out ahead in the long run.

* SOME games of Video Poker and Blackjack do offer a slight positive
advantage to a VERY skilled player. (But don't quit your day job.)

* Worst game in the house (for the player): Keno.

* Second worst game in the house: Big-6 (wheel of fortune)

* The slot machine is the only common casino game where the player cannot
  determine the odds against him/her.

* Smile, you're on Candid Camera. Virtually every table and machine game in
most casinos will be continuously recorded on videotape. Every transaction
at the casino "cage" (cashier) and larger change booths will be recorded.
Newer installations use two cameras per window, one on the customer's
face, the other on the hands and the $$$. (Hey, I gave you a $20!!!
No you didn't! You gave me a $10. Wanna see the replay?)

You can safely assume that any place where cash is kept or changes hands
will be monitored in one way or another.

Security cameras also can be found in such places as parking lots,
passageways, elevators, shops, hotel desks, casino entryways, vending
  areas, etc.

* Photography is prohibited in most gaming areas. (Major exception to this
is all Circus-Circus properties, where it is permitted.) Ask a security
guard or casino host before taking pictures in gaming areas.

* 99% of the "Free" and "Special" come-ons offered by casinos are not
worth the time or effort to collect.

* There is no such thing as a slot machine that is "ready to hit" or
  "overdue to hit".

* Some slot machines are programmed to pay out more than others. Where
the most liberal ones are is the subject of much speculation.

* MYTH: Highest paying machines are always in certain locations, such
as by the door or window or end of aisle.

* MYTH: The casinos regularly adjust payback on slot machines, make them
pay less weekends, convention times, etc.

* Speaking of myths, yeah, I've heard the stories too, about the bathtub
and the kidney and such. If you are tempted to believe it, go to any
bookstore or libe and check out the works of Jan H. Brunvand. :)

* Very few crimes against persons (muggings, purse snatchings, assault)
occur in casinos or on the street in the gaming areas. However, don't
  let your guard down.

* If you do win a significant amount of cash, most casinos will have a
security guard escort you to your car or room. Likewise, most will
give you your winnings in the form of a check.

* If you win a significant amount ($1200 or so), the casino is required
to report the win to IRS and to withhold a percentage. The casino will
insist on identification and a TID/SSN in order to collect your $$$$.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Restrooms:

This can be a very tender subject. (Another slice, anyone? :)

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on line. This is not
legal advice.

It's been reported that there exists a law in Las Vegas (maybe Clark
County, maybe Nevada) requiring that one use only the restroom that is
intended for his/her anatomical sex. While there may have been such a
law at one time, both an attorney and a LV area police officer state
that there currently is no such law on the books.

There are, however, certain laws of public conduct that may be used, if
the circumstances warrant, such as trespass and disorderly conduct.

For example, if you insist upon using the ladies room, against the
objection of management, you are liable to be escorted off the
property, or even arrested for trespass. If you make a fuss when asked
to leave a ladies room, or when asked to leave the property, you are
liable to be charged with disorderly conduct.

Time, place, and circumstance should always be taken into
consideration, as well as a good dose of common sense.

If you don't pass well, or if you are uneasy about it, avoid public
restrooms unless you are very sure the management and other patrons
will have no objection. The management of most t-friendly clubs and
lounges will usually have no such objection, but the management of the
family-oriented "theme" properties and tourist attractions might.

If you use a public ladies room, be a lady, and be discreet. Get in, do
your thing, and get out, all very quietly. Don't push the envelope. And
please, don't go to the ladies room as a group.

Unless you do something to call attention to yourself, it's very
unlikely that you will be confronted.

Directions to various functions:

* Welcome get-together. Good Times Lounge.
Directions posted above.

* Piano-bar and early breakfast. Keys Lounge, 1000 East Sahara. If
coming from most Strip hotels, take either Las Vegas Blvd, Paradise, or
Industrial Rd. to Sahara. Turn right (east) on Sahara. If coming from
downtown, take either Main St. or Las Vegas Blvd. to Sahara. Turn left
(east) on Sahara. Keys will be on the north side of Sahara, opposite
Commercial Center, between Paradise and Maryland. Park either on Sahara
or in the lot in the rear of the building.

* Driving/walking tour of Strip, Beginning at NYNY, driving and
walking. NYNY is on the northwest corner of the Strip at Tropicana.
Take Las Vegas Blvd (Strip), Paradise, or I-15 to Tropicana. Both valet
and self parking are convenient. NYNY is very conspicuous, with the
skyscraper facade and roller coaster. Meet just outside the main
entrance.

* Boylesque (Kenny Kerr Show), Plaza Hotel. The Plaza Hotel is at the
foot of Fremont St. downtown. If coming from the Strip, take Las Vegas
Blvd north. Turn onto Main St. (bear left) just north of the Sahara
intersection. (Alternately take Paradise, Industrial, or I-15 to
Sahara, then Sahara to Las Vegas Blvd, to Main.)

Take Main St. north to downtown. Self parking is in a lot just to the
south of Fremont St (south of the Plaza Hotel). on the west side of
Main. Valet parking is at the circle drive at the very foot of Fremont.
Note that several blocks of Fremont St. downtown are closed to
vehicles. (Fremont St. Experience.) Plaza Hotel is very plainly marked.

* Rocky Horror Picture Show, Paradise Dollar Theater, Tropicana at
Pecos. Take either Paradise, Las Vegas Blvd, Maryland, or I-15 to
Tropicana. Turn left (east) on Tropicana. Drive east (past the Good
Times and Liberace Museum) to Pecos. If you pass under the I-515
underpass, turn around, you have gone too far. :)

* Hoover Dam Tour. We will meet our guide at a rendezvous point that is
not accessible to the general public. Travel in carpool if at all
possible. If you have a need to take your own vehicle, let me know, and
I will give you explicit instructions. Drive time from LV Strip and
downtown to the rendezvous point is about 30 minutes each way.

* La Cage (Frank Marino Show) Riviera Hotel, Strip at Riviera Blvd.
Self-parking is tricky from the Strip, involving a cut-through of a
small adjoining lot. I suggest you take Paradise south from Sahara and
follow signs to the Riviera parking garage, or use valet parking. If
valet parking, approach the Riviera from the south heading north.
Riviera (like most hotels) is very conspicuously marked.

* To get back to the airport: Best way is to take Paradise straight
south and keep going. Follow signs to rental car return or whatever.
Alternately take I-15 south to I-215 east and follow signs.

Transportation:

I will have a van for the weekend, and can give most anybody staying in
the main Strip area a lift to most activities. Please let me know as
early as possible if you will be needing a ride.

Denise has also volunteered to pick up people who will be staying at
the south end of the Strip, including the area out by Silverton.

Taxis are usually readily available, but are not cheap. Those who have
used Las Vegas taxis en femme have reported no difficulty.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
If you will be in early ...

Pre-DLV meeting:

Let's meet at Good Times about 8:00pm Thursday evening and have a drink
and a chat. This is a (usually) quiet bar that is very easy to find and
t-friendly. If we then want to move on to Gypsy or Keys (or some to
both) in a while, depending on everybody's mood, then that will be
fine. Gypsy is not too far away. Keys is several miles, but not that
far.

This is at the intersection of Tropicana and Spencer in the strip mall
right by the Liberace Museum. Detailed directions are above.

Need a ride. Page or phone. Numbers below.

I'll be sure to be there by 8:00pm at the latest. For those who do not
know me by sight, I'll kinda keep an eye open for those who appear to
be looking for somebody.

In early, got questions, just wanna check signals? If so, please feel
free to phone or page almost anytime after Monday the 10th.

Gonna be at Networld+Interop? I'll be there, wave if you see me! (Yeah,
right.) Seriously, if you want to get together during the week, just to
say hi, or to maybe have a drink or a bite, just phone or page almost
any time. Monday and Tuesday afternoon and evening will be busy, but
from then on I'll have a flexible schedule.

If for some reason you would like me to contact you, please e-mail me
back and give me the following information:

. Where you will be staying
. Phone number (if it's a major hotel, I already have it)
. Who should I ask for.

How to get in touch with me:

I'll be carrying a digital pager at all times. I'll also have a cell
phone which I will be carrying most of the time.

If you need to get in touch with me between now and Tuesday the 11th,
please page. You can phone after the business day of Tuesday if you
need to.

During DLV, feel free to page or phone anytime between the hours of
10:00am or so and 1:00am or so. After 1 in the morning, and before 10
in the morning, please do so only if it is urgent.

To page me, do the following:

Phone 1-800-555-5555 (toll free) from any Touch-Tone phone. When you
are prompted for the Pager ID, enter the number 555-5555. When you are
prompted to enter a numeric message, enter the number at which you can
be reached, INCLUDING EXTENSION OR ROOM NUMBER. (Note that some LV
hotels will not complete an incoming call to a guest room if the caller
only gives the room number. Ask at the desk when you check in, and if
this is the case, it would be better to phone the cellular.)

My cell phone number is 702-303-4242. This is a local call from the LV
metro area (just dial 303-4242). If I don't answer, try paging me.

I'll be checking e-mail at least once a day. (annie@annie.net)

If you are in early, local, or need to get in touch with me before the
event, feel free to phone or page. I'll be in meetings most of Monday
(10th) and Tuesday (11th) and I will quite possibly shut off the pager
and phone at those times.

I'll also be shutting them off during all the production shows
during DLV.
