Transvestism is, literally, Crossdressing the practice of wearing articles of clothing intended for the opposite sex/gender.
History
The term is attributed to Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, ca. 1919.
Contemporary Usage
The term is somewhat deprecated within the LGBT Community but does appear in clinical literature as the term Fetishistic Transvestism is currently defined as a category in the DSM 5.
