You bring up a very good point, as it's been affirmed over and
over that our single purpose is to coordinate one social event
a year in Las Vegas.
There seems to be a tendency in many TG organizations to try to
expand, and to try to be all things to all people. We (DLV) did
establish very early in our years that we were not going to try
to replicate what is already provided by support groups or the
major (at the time) TG events.
Also, public outreach has never been a stated purpose of DLV,
although our attendees have bordered on this several times
"on their own time" so to speak.

What negative publicity?
The only thing I can think of that even comes close to negative
publicity is one guilt-by-association allegation regarding some
behavior that was right out of Animal House. I've always heard
that it was concluded that our people were not responsible.

Grab can of worms, walk toward can opener. Enough said!
