Tina writes (pirated from another item):

+Re hotels, I usually stay at the:

+Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown North
+10 E. Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611
+Tel: 1-312-595-0000 Fax: 1-312-527-1989

+This is within short walking distance (2 or 3 blocks, and you know how
+I usually hate to walk) of 2 of the night spots we frequently visit:

+1). Baton Show Lounge
+2). Gentry on State Street

+There are several other hotels within a 2 block radius (Marriott
+Courtyard, Best Western, the place Annie stays that I can't remember
+the name of, etc). The Hilton Garden Inn sits literally on top of a
+subway stations, which makes it easy to get around in the daytime in boy
+mode.

The place I (annie) stayed last year was the Best Western River North at
Ohio and LaSalle. Nothing fancy, but clean, comfortable, and safe. It
was $120-ish including parking and real breakfast.

If I drive this year, I'll probably stay there, since free parking with
in-out is a big plus in that neighborhood. I may not drive, since air
is now cheaper than the gas to get there.

I've also stayed at the Holiday Inn City Center at Ohio and Fairbanks
and the Hyatt Regency on Wacker. Both of these are very nice but
$150-ish at minimum.

+The Magic Mile is within 6 blocks and their is a Nordstrom's right
+across from the hotel, a drug store on the side block, and several
+restaurants. So, you don't need a car if you are willing to take a
+taxi (they line up at many of these hotels) to more distant locations
+(like Boys Town).

+Don't take the subway at night in girl mode.

I might partly agree and disagree on that item. I would say that if you
dress to blend and know exactly where you are going, there should be no
problem taking the Red Line between the River North area and the
Boystown bar district at any time. I would definitely avoid going to
some areas via El/Subway at night, though, in either mode.

+That said, I do usually rent a car, because the daily rental is cheaper
+than the taxi fare one-way from O'Hare Airport.

If you're staying at Grand and State, it's a very easy train ride from
ORD right to your hotel. They have a nice station in the terminal, and
when you get downtown, take one of the underground tunnels (within fare
control) over to the Red Line and up to Grand.

+And I keep thinking that I will go to one of the museums or something
+during the day-time (hasn't happened yet, I'm usually sleeping). My
+hotel doesn't charge for overnight parking for registered guests. The
+Hilton isn't cheap, but I usually have points to stay free for at least
+some of the nights.

+There are big paid parking lots near Gentry on State, but parking in
+Boys Town (where Gentry #2 is) is very difficult, even with the limited
+paid parking down there. I always take a taxi to/from Boys Town, and I
+can sometime catch a ride back. Walking distances in Boys Town are
+very long. Comfortable (but pretty) shoes are an absolute requirement.
