File for PinkFest 2003:
A bartender at Gentry recommend The Nail Shop on Broadway in Boystown.
He does drag and says that there just are no nail shops currently in
the State Street area, just the expensive shops up on Michigan Avenue
(which he said weren't particularly friendly). He expects that
situation to change as they complete the residential high-rise
apartments directly across from my hotel.
He believes that many more basic service type shops will be opening up.
I had a lot of spare time today to walk around the area and there are
certainly plenty of open office and retail spaces, but also lots of
little things I didn't know about previously (small delis, adult book
shop, a straight piano bar, several sports bars, etc.) Also, I found 2
other hotels (Marriott Courtyard and Hampton Inn and Suites) both within
a block of Gentry.
Finally, thanks to Annie for clueing me in to the Chicago subway system.
I was embarrassed to discover that my hotel (the Hilton Garden Inn)
sits directly on top of a Red Line station. You literally turn right
out of the hotel, walk 10 steps and then down the stairway into the
subway entrance. This station was not handicapped accessible (some
stations are), so no easy way to get your luggage up and down (no ramps
or elevators, only steep stairs and lots of them).
