Sarajayne has volunteered to do some legwork in the form of checking
out some of the properties in regards to a meeting room and/or group
rates for regular hotel rooms.

SJ and I spoke briefly on line the other day, and she will make it clear
to the managements that this will be a pleasure trip, thus they should
not price this as if everybody were charging to an expense account.

I think the target price should be in the range of what they will
normally call "casino rate", which is what is offered to regular
low-rollers who play a moderate amount. This seems to be 40-60% of the
cold-call rate through the hotel desk for an advance reservation.

In order for our people to go for this, instead of going for their
favorite place, the price has to be right.

Also, some of our people (myself included) will get offers for comp
rooms. Free is a hard price to beat, so I think it can be assumed that
there will be some of our people staying other places, not to mention
those who live in LV.

Well, we won't know for sure until that weekend. :)

Seriously, at this time I would guess 35-60, with a closer projection
in early 2000. It's hard to say if it will snowball or compress as the
next few years go by. Historically, many of the traditional t* events
snowball the first few years, and then compress somewhat due to a
saturation factor. Gut feeling says it will grow significantly, since
people have been speaking highly of it and word is spreading.

We're already getting lots of hits on the DLV2000 web page, many more
than we got last year at this time on the DLV99 page. Many hits are
coming from the LV Trangendered web, with some coming from search
engines and other pages with links to DLV. We're getting about one
query per week via e-mail, many more than last year at this time. Most
frequent questions are what are the dates for next year, and how many
people will be attending.

I don't know who was there when this was discussed a few times, but the
concensus was that the minimum per person to attend DLV was in the $500
range, including air fare. Assuming $200-ish air fare, that means each
person will bring several hundred to the Las Vegas economy for such things
as accommodations, food, and entertainment. That's not including gaming,
which could be from $0 per person (or negative :) to hundreds, even
thousands. For those who go shopping (most did), add anywhere from tens
to hundreds.

Comments, ladies? How much would such a thing be worth to you?

IMAO, it should be optional. For example, we get the fish-bicycle
analogy if we look at it from the perspective of a fully-transitioned
LV local. However, there does seem to be a significant demand for
something like this.

Personally, I would be willing to pay $5 or so per day. I really don't
see myself using it much, but for $5 or so, it might be a nice option,
and worth it to support the concept. Anything significantly more than
that and I would be tempted to pass on it.

Hmmmmm.... Interesting. Again, reinforces what we've been saying the
past few years, that Las Vegas is quite "safe", and even if somebody
gets read, it's no big deal.

Dates for Networld+Interop 2000 have been announced. It will run from
Monday, May 8, thru Friday, May 12.

I'm proposing that we schedule DLV 2000 to run from Thursday evening,
May 11, thru Tuesday, May 16. N+I winds down significantly on Thursday,
so I don't think there will be problems with reservations or crowds.

Historically, weekends following large conventions are slow.

If anybody knows of any compelling reason to change this tradition,
please write to the list as soon as possible.

Hmmm.... I would be interested, and I know of a few others who would be
as well. I'll put that on the tentative schedule, and we can check to
see who's performing over the DLV dates when the HR schedule for that
time comes out next year.

This is a very good example of what deals you can get if you look
around. Many of the steak, lobster, and prime rib deals are very well
worth it. As some people have found out, many of the cheaper come-ons
are not worth it.

Ok, I'll put it on the ever-growing list of possible activities.

For those who don't know what this is, Rhyolite is a true "ghost town".
In the early 1900's the town had a population of about 15,000, iirc,
but for several decades has had a population of zero, not counting the
part-time caretaker. This is NOT one of those tourist-trapish so-called
ghost towns with staged gunfights and overpriced souvenirs, this is the
real thing.

We had this as an option this year, but it never happened, mostly
because there was so much to do (in LV) and limited time. If this
happens, it will probably take most of an afternoon.
