Happy Thanksgiving:

We have a briefer mailing this week. Happy Thanksgiving to you and
yours!

In years past we've kind of taken a semi-break in planning over the
holidays, but for the past two years we've been unable to do so, due to
the very early dates of the event.

This year, however, we're in more of a "normal" position on the
calendar, so between now and January we'll be doing ORG mailings on an
as-needed basis and we'll resume the heavy-duty planning after the first
of the year.

Hotels:

Cami is reporting that the negotiations with the Flamingo are almost
complete and we should have some black and white rates Real Soon Now.

Update on the update: A late note from Cami states the details are now
firm so we'll be able to roll this out VERY shortly. :)

We invite all to get a pre-peek at the 2018 hotel page, which will be
rolled out just as soon as the special rates are solid. It's on line
here:

https://divalas.vegas/dlv2018/2018hotels.html

We will also be sending out a general mailing once the hotel rates are
solid.

Please join me in thanking Cami for heading up this project! :)

Lunch With:

Aejaie writes:

I'm happy to host a lunch Monday and Wednesday.

Depending on my travel plans i might be available for Sunday.

I'm also looking at another event, once i have more details I'll contact
the group with details.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Aejaie. :)

The schedule below should reflect the Monday and Wednesday changes,
assuming the update process is working. :) Please let us know the
locations as soon as you set them and also the day/time of your other
activity as soon as you have plans made.

To all, particularly new volunteers. The "Lunch With" series is a very
good first activity and can be done with very little busy work and
formality. For a minimalist approach you can simply name a place and
agree to be there to welcome the others and direct traffic. This is
probably the easiest ticket to voting status that there is. Ginger is
used as a place-holder and default hostess, and it can be Lunch With
*YOU* if you wish. Just name a day! :)

Tag test update and clarification:

A comment was received on the name tag image test saying to the effect
that the tag image did print properly at the stated 3" x 5" dimensions,
but that the cut and folded tag would not properly fit the clip-on tag
holders that were handed out at DLV 2017.

This is correct, and the dimensions were just nice round numbers of the
approximate size, making it easy to see if intended dimensions were
properly printed.

Should all work out, the correct tag dimensions will be used for the
actual tag images.

Thanks to all for testing out the tag printing process.

Michelle (NV) writes:

As an extra test, I printed the name tag from my iPhone to a WiFi
connected home printer.

Worked fine!
. . . . .

Thanks Michelle. These are the kind of tests we need, with various
combinations of technology.

We'll most likely do a second test of this right after the first of the
year.

Convention within a vacation:

Annie writes:

If I'm understanding this correctly (and I'm gonna try to avoid using
the "c-word" here), what you're proposing is that we carve out one day,
Wednesday, and try some kind of a multi-activity single-location "event
within the event" type of thing.

The good news is that Wednesday is more or less wide open for about
anything.

My Big Burning Question would be the demand for such an affair from the
Teeming Millions, and the possible exceeding of the "attention span" of
attendees.

To all, would you, or would you not be interested in such an affair?

Thanks Cami.

I really do appreciate your confidence in me but Opening Night is always
a rush for me as my wife is usually with me at my DLV vacation and I
must spend some of my time with her.. (She does not go with me when I am
dressed as Katie). so my time must be balanced.

I had always assisted Bev with the Opener and once or twice with her
other activities in a small way too.

I did the intro for the New Attendees with Vera 2 years ago and
volunteered to do it again last year but no one replied to me or Vera
either so I assumed that you had someone else to do it. This turned out
to be not the case as Annie graciously stepped up and did it for the
Team.

If Vera is doing a presentation again in 2018 I will assist her. If
needed I promise to be there early enough to meet and greet the new
people and to keep my babbling short and to the point because attention
spans seem to dwindle a bit when we go on too long when the socializing
time appears to be passing us by.

Along with KKKK that is the extent of what I am prepared to do mainly
because I am getting too old to put enough interest into it then it
fails because I was not enthusiastic enough and I suspect it would
show..

I really think we need new Hostesses to move into the fray and if past
volunteers keep doing it why would someone else even ask to? Seriously
Girls. I think that prospective volunteers often get put off helping
when they see the heavy weights taking up the slack and doing 5 events.
Give them time and they will step up.

My suggestion would be just as in Pro Sports bring up a few new faces in
a secondary role and they will be ready for next season, Don't bring
them up and you will have an old and likely complacent team.
Fortunately for us we seem to have enough at the moment and DLV is still
successful in a lot of ways.

I think this part is important.... Ask someone who appears to be on the
outside looking in and who looks to be reasonably capable to help you
with an event Even if you don't need it and they will feel included and
probably be back next year with an event of their own.

I did this with a works golf tournament and it encouraged new organizers
to step in when 2 of us retired.

Annie responds:

To all, if our traditional annual opener at Bahama Breeze is to happen,
someone (as in one of you reading this right now) will need to step
forward and volunteer to coordinate it.

The one big risk is that the longer we wait, the greater the chance that
some other party will jump in and reserve "our room" for our preferred
evening, forcing us to either go with a different night (not very good
for an opener) or a different venue.

The staff of the Bahama Breeze is very familiar with our group, so there
will be no awkward cold-calling, explaining the nature of our group,
etc. You will basically need to be the go-between.

This would be a good "step up" activity, for those who have done the
simpler activities and want to get more involved in our program.

Please consider it.
