Org List:

This is the DLV 2016 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Regular ORG mailing:

This mailing contains the items not exclusively related to the final
major gathering. There's some cutting and fitting of the submitted items
to do this. :)

Everyone should have now received three special mid-cycle mailings that
have to do with the final major gathering.

Thanks to all who have commented on the final major gathering. Please
keep those cards and letters coming! :)

We'll have another special mailing covering the final major gathering
within the next day or two.

This mailing is somewhat long, but there are many items that volunteers
should be aware of. Please read thoroughly. :)
. . . . .

All, please look over the working schedule to be sure all of the newly
added activities are in their correct place.
. . . . .

As of this mailing our registered headcount stands at 110, which is
about 10% ahead of where we were in both 2014 and 2015 at this time in
January. Registrations, both newbee and veteran, are now trickling in
one every few days or so.

Mailing list joins have been coming in at about one per day.

We'll open the general registration flood-gate on or about February 1.

Shiloh Schedule:

Vera writes:

I'd like to do the Shiloh Horse Ranch Tour on Wednesday. Leaving Las
Vegas in the morning and returning to have lunch where we had lunch the
last time.

Thanks, Vera. It's on the schedule. We'll note that lunch will happen
in Jean on the way back.

Activity Highlights:

It's that time of year again. :)

Please be thinking of what you want to tell the world of your
activities.

This year we'll be trying a separate area in the Discussion Forum just
for activity highlights. We'll keep the activity highlights in the main
Discussion Forum area for 5 days then move them to the dedicated area.
We'll have an up-top "sticky" giving one link to the activity highlight
area.

This is, of course, to let the highlights remain in a featured area
without crowding out the normal Discussion Forum messages.

As things progress we can look at things such as times viewed and number
of replies to decide whether to do ths in coming years.

How can I help:

Sandy writes:

Hi Ladies sorry I have been a "bit" late in responding how can I help?
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks, Sandy.

Here are a few things you can do to help, both in the immediate future
and during the event itself. This applies not only to you but to other
new volunteers.

As of this time our number-one front-burner item is the final major
gathering and what we really need most of all at this time is feedback
and guidance on how to proceed. Please read over the special mailings on
the topic of the final major gathering and give us your thoughts. It
does appear that we have enough "voluntary volunteers" to make the final
gathering happen, so don't worry that you'll get coerced into a
high-maintenance job just by commenting.

Just hit REPLY to this mailing or any of the special mailings that have
come out during the past week and give us your thoughts.
. . . . .

What we will be needing in the immediate future are volunteers to agree
to coordinate many of the smaller (and easier to coordinate) activities
that will make up our schedule. In particular we'll need people to
coordinate such things as the dining options on a few evenings as well
as the various daytime activities.

Next week we'll do another schedule review and you (and the others who
have not selected an activity to coordinate yet) can get an idea of what
you might be interested in doing.

IIRC on your volunteer submission you said you were most interested in
coordinating some kind of dining activity. There will be countless
opportunities to do this, using a very simple method, or one that's more
elaborate. We'll identify some of the dining needs during the schedule
review next week.

If you need specific suggestions on how you can help, ask and you will
receive, in abundance. :)

Thanks again for volunteering! :)

Creative Wigs and such:

Cami writes:

So Wendi is going to come on Thursday and is willing to do a makeup and
wig seminar.

We should probably plan on it being around 2 o'clock with the location
to be determined. She really doesn't like that bar as it's kind of dark
and doesn't really work especially if we're going to do the make up
seminar as well. Any thoughts on where we might be able to go?

Also, I think I will do the carnival court afternoon dancing and
drinking thing on Friday. Lastly, I will likely do the higher end dinner
and show on Tuesday night. I think that kind of gets me caught up on
what I am doing.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the updates Cami.

As for a venue, the first one that comes to mind is Blue Ox. This would
also probably work well for a combined 2bshapely and Creative Wigs duo
type of thing.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Blue Ox is waaaayyyy out on
Sahara, almost out to Jones IIRC. It's an unfamiliar drive for most out
of towners and a quite spendy taxi ride. My hunch says that the turnout
would not be what is desired simply due to the distance.

Another option might be to do it in a hotel room. We've done this before
(Hidden Woman) but it's a challenge to pass the word on the hotel room
number to the teeming millions.

If you feel like doing some homework, maybe one of the bars in the Linq
vicinity would be willing to make a deal of the space in exchange for
the bar business, kinda like Spotlight has been doing.

Any other suggestions, gang?

All of the other activities sound good. Please let us know the details
as soon as they are solid.

PF Chang:

Sara (no "h" writes:

First of all, I would like to apologize for my radio silence of late. I
was in a car accident before Thanksgiving that has pretty much taken up
most of my attention. I think my recovery is such that I can focus on
getting ready for DLV which is less than three months away... where does
the time go?!?!

All that said, I have put out my annual message to P.F. Chang's and
pending their reply, I would like to pencil this in for the usual
Wednesday evening time slot from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

I'm a bit of a creature of habit and I have always enjoyed this venue in
terms of location and reasonable prices, not to mention that the
semi-private balcony area makes it feel more like a cocktail party with
a dinner option (which most seem to partake in) rather than a formal
dinner where everyone arrives at a set time, eats at the same time, etc.

Also, the annual pre-ending bash makeover event (now at Nordstrom) can
be put on the schedule once we know which day the grand finale will be.
. . . . .

Post-script on P.F. Chang's Planet Hollywood...

I sent my annual email to them and on top of all of the terms of our
previous visits, I asked specifically for separate checks in groups of
four (3 checks for the tables of 12, 4 for tables of 16), citing our
2015 survey results and discussion thereafter. Here is the reply...

+It's wonderful to hear from you again! I have the balcony reserved for
+you on Wednesday, March 30th at 5:00pm. I listed the guest count as
+40, but there is lots of flexibility up there. And, we have remodeled
+so it looks extra beautiful! Separate checks and regular menu will
+work fine for us and we hope that makes your job easier too! If you
+have any questions, please email or give us a call.

How awesome is that??? :)
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

It is awesome indeed! :) This is another gem, like Bahama Breeze.

I'm wondering if the remodeled upstairs would hold 60-70 bodies, with
not all of them dining? If so, this could be a good candidate for one
of our major gatherings.

Anyway, it's on the schedule. Please check the schedule below to be sure
that the timing is the way you want it, and thanks for agreeing to do
this one again! :)

Volunteer Luncheon:

Katie writes:

Hi Gang.

Are we not having a Volunteers lunch this year?

I do not see one on the schedule but would assume if we did decide to do
this then it would almost have to be Wednesday or Thursday (at Lunch
Time) Ha!

Also. I did not mention that Carlos n' Charlies would Definitely Not be
a closed room thing. It would be 100% mixing with the public! I am ok
with it but I am guessing it would not be ok for a lot of the DLV gang.

I am not plugging the joint and won't be getting free drinks there for
my efforts unfortunately but maybe C n'C's could be a kickoff point in
the early evenings for those who are always ready to go way too early
(Like Moi) and who like a bar stool to sit on and possibly take a few
piccies too before their night begins. I will likely be trying this at
least once during the week as an early evening Happy Hour place to relax
and get in the mood. Flam' temporary residents who are in the Spa Tower
will almost have to walk right past the place if they are going out in
the direction of the Strip or going ambling through the casino.

This might not be a decent choice to meet up with other ladies and get
to know what's going on and what the options might be for that evening
and the following day.

KKK of course is the Real place to get to know whats happening each day
I remember one day last year where I actually needed 2 hands to count
the attendees. Ha!

Dionne writes:

>+Monday, March 28: 12:00n: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms

If there is to be a volunteer luncheon, would it make sense to
combine it with a LwG?

Monday would be a good time to discuss last minute items and prep for
the Welcome Dinner. Of course, Monday would need to work for all of our
volunteers' schedules.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

IMAO, Monday daytime, for this year specifically, is not good for any
kind of featured activity of any type. It's an arrival day for many and
several of them are gonna be lucky to be fashionably late to our opening
gathering that evening.

Tuesday has golf, which always attracts a mid-size group of our people
and Wednesday has Shiloh, which is expected to take a similar-sized
group out of town over lunch. This leaves Thursday and Friday as the
better days for any kind of special luncheon.

JoAnn has been bouncing around ideas for a "tea" or "dessert reception"
as a volunteer recognition activity and that may be worth trying.

Comments, gang?

Dancing and Fantasy Ball:

Valorie writes:

Happy new year everyone!! I guess it is time for me to chime in again.

*Dance Lessons *

Last year there was a significant drop in pole dance class attendance (down
to 5 from 10+). I think this was a combination of several effects.

1) several pole dance regulars had unrelated injuries that prevented
them from attending

2) general drop in attendance towards the end of the DLV 2015 week.

3) lack of novelty in the 3rd year of classes On the other hand, the
event did inspire Zoe to host a similar and successful event at
Wildside.

My first suggestion is that we switch to a new form of dance (belly
dancing, ballroom etc). This would keep it fresh. Last year Dionne
recommended Ballroom Addiction.

Ballroom Addiction
http://www.ballroomaddiction.com
2301 Renaissance Dr.
Las Vegas, NV 89119
702-331-7711

There are several local belly dancing instructors that would give
private lessons. This will require a bit of research talking to the
different instructors and finding a suitable venue.

Amiras http://www.amirasbelly.com/
Estela instructor - http://raksestela.com/
Rocky Mountain Dance Compnay - http://www.rmbdc.org/

As for pole, I will still be taking one of the studio's regularly
scheduled pole dance lessons at some point during the week. The
difference is that these classes will be open to the public, not a
private party, though also slightly cheaper. If anyone wants to join me
they can.

Lap dancing for beginners - Friday April 1st, 12pm-1pm
. . . . .

*Fantasy ball*

The Fantasy ball was originally spawned by the temporary closure of EHM.
Yet the Fantasy ball is also suffering from the Wild Side effect. Some
people love the event, some where offended, some people never understood
what it was about. For me it is about three things.

1) an opportunity to wear more risque/costumed outfits
2) an opportunity to perform in an amateur talant show.
3) an opportunity for everyone to get up on pole stage and dance/hang out

Back in August, Annie suggested that we overhaul/suspend the Fantasy
Ball. We have had two successful fantasy balls, yet something doesn't
feel right. Options to revamp:

1) Move parts of event to EHM (risque outfits, talent show)
2) Split off talent show into a new event at new venue.
3) Move Fantasy Ball at "Kings of Hustler" to Wildside

The main advantages of the Hustler location are the cheap drinks and
great stage. The staff are helpful, though not as much as when Dr V
managed the club directly. The show could broaden to include comedy acts
and other talents. DLV does have some very talented performers, I would
love to see Cinnamon perform somewhere. I think one of the major
mistakes I made the last two years was not to have a dedicated dinner
option. Since people couldn't eat in their risque costumes, there was no
opportunity to get changed for the ball (same could apply to EHM)
. . . . .

*Mainstream clubbing*

Last year Club XS at the Wynn was great a success. The Light night club
at Mandalay Bay was rather loud and dull though the limo ride was great.
I suggest we go back to XS, probably on Friday night but other days
could work.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks for the thoughts, Valorie. :)

The Pole Dance Instruction has consistently received high enjoyment
scores. Some of the photos of same are among those getting the highest
view counts. It might be worth a shot to put attendance at one of the
public sessions on the schedule to see how it works.

I think the ballroom dance instruction thing could work. It was highly
rated back when we did it. I think it's worth bringing back.

Belly dancing? Only way to see if it will work is to try it!

Lap Dancing? ????? uh????? :)
. . . . .

As for late-night clubbing, I think there's probably the demand to do it
on more than one evening, provided that you (and/or someone else) are
willing to coordinate it.

Also see note below.
. . . . .

Saved the best for last. The Fantasy Ball.

I circled back to the ratings, the comments (including my own) and my
own recollections of the Fantasy Balls in 2014 and 2015.

This is the only activity I'm aware of where the headcount decreased
significantly from the first year to the second, but the enjoyment score
on the survey also significantly INCREASED!

It scored 4.11 in 2014 with 45 responses. Still a very respectable
enjoyment score. However, in 2015 it scored 4.53 with 32 responses,
which is toward the high end of the enjoyment scale.

My conclusion from those factoids is that the second year it was mostly
attended by those who were REALLY into it, and thus the enjoyment level
was very high.

And, I'm only aware of one case where anyone was offended. :)

Now, here are my personal impressions.

IIRC, we had 80-people (could have even been 90-ish?) in 2014. Even
most of those who I would not consider "really into it" appeared to be
enjoying the party.

Fast forward to 2015 and, IIRC, we had 50-some (somebody please correct
me if I'm wrong on this) through the door. My personal experience was
that the crowd did not appear to be as vibrant, the bartender not as
friendly as the year before, and the crowd seemed to dissipate sooner
than in 2014.

I bummed a ride to Paris as the crowd was breaking up and I remember
several from the KOH crowd had also vacated and were there at Paris.

It's also my impression that the expectations the staff had WRT the
number of heads through the door and the bar sales were not met.

Here are my thoughts and suggestions, aimed toward keeping this kind
of activity viable.

First of all, for those who genuinely enjoy the Kings Of Hustler club,
why not coordinate a late-evening trip to the club on one of their
regular nights? This could be part of a late-night clubbing series.

Second, I would (again) suggest putting all of the "edgy", "self
produced performance", and EHM energy into one high-profile evening
activity at EHM. Fantasy dress-up for those who want to do it, and a
self-produced amateur show for those who like to perform. Add to that a
self or docent-guided EHM tour and an informal Dr. Victoria session and
you have the recipe for a very special evening.

Comments on any of this, anyone?

Mini-golf:

Aejaie writes:

I keep hearing mention of the Rio Hotel and Mini Golf, is there a mini
golf course near the hotel people are considering?

I stay at the Rio Hotel several 4-5 times a year and know it doesn't
have mini golf on the property.

Dionne writes:

> I am also interested in the mini-golf and lunch activity if is not
> on Tuesday. I love the Rio buffet so I think this is a great idea

Not having this on Tuesday makes sense, although the better golfers will
be tough to beat (;-0)) Can you putt in your Pumps?

As per my previous suggestion, having the Formal dinner on Thursday and
mini-golf on Friday gives amble opportunities to get dressed up.

Remember, it's KISS themed with Glow-in-the-Dark golf balls and the
18th. hole shoots your ball into Gene Simmons long tongue.

Suggested attire is a wide range, such as Hard Rocker, golf-girl, casual
and boy-mode with bags packed in the car. Golfers can queue after lunch
or before dinner or during dinner. Any Friday evening event could follow
such as dancing.

Death Valley:

Delaney writes:

I went to Death Valley from DLV the year before last - I woke up on
East Coast work commuting time and was antsy.

It was a nice drive, and made very good time. I doubt many go to Death
Valley in April, but I can offer that the early departure may have
helped avoiding traffic, should there have been any later in the day.

It's one of those places that you're glad you went once, but probably
wouldn't be in a hurry to repeat. I couldn't face makeup at 3AM, so I
went guy-mode, but I saw nothing that would have caused me to believe
that wearing my tiara would have been a problem :-).

If you decide to go, I can give you a few minor tips, if you like - and
you don't need hiking shoes; sneakers would be fine, there isn't much
walking unless you are planning a specific hike.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

We did a Death Valley side trip in 2006. It's ripe for a re-run. We only
did the lower end of the Valley simply due to time constraints. We
entered via Shoshone, did the Badwater loop and returned via Furnace
Creek (is there really a creek there?) and Zabriskie Point.

For photos of this trip, surf here. About 1/2 way down the page.

http://divalas.vegas/dlv2006n/acts.html

The bad news is that it takes most of the day, and I would not suggest
it being done on the day of a very intense evening schedule.

Check splitting:

Michelle (NV) writes:

Ladies,

In recent soirees by a trans-gender group to which I belong--both here
in Las Vegas and in other cities--there is a really serious problem at
some big restaurants. It seems that it is very rare to be able to get
separate checks anymore. This seems to be a recent cultural change, as
it was only one or two years ago where you could get separate checks
easily.

What happens is a lot of hate and discontent when the "hostess" of the
event gets stuck holding a single bill, and trying to manage cash flow
becomes a drill! That hostess might be putting her own credit card at
risk.

For instance, last night we had 20 ladies at a mainstream restaurant,
and we had to come up with nearly $800 cash to pay the bill, taxes, and
tips. Dividing the bill by the number of diners and coming up with
"number" to pay isn't fair! There are some women who will be on austere
budgets and will eat a salad and a glass of water, and their "share" is
covering the proportions from one who is eating a steak and drinking
wine. (Saw this at First Event when we went to a local place for
dinner.)

I personally don't have any problems, but it will require me to carry
sufficient cash to cover my part of the bill either way. But one cannot
entertain the idea that they can pay their own portion with a credit
card. Isn't going to work.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks for the comments, Michelle.

I've seen check-splitting go smoothly, and I've seen it become a train
wreck!

IMAO the only way that's fair, is to have everyone pay for what they
ordered. When a check is shared, for some reason, all of those who
obviously passed Mrs. O'Hooley's grade-school math class have all kinds
of issues. It's not rocket surgery! It's not even linear algebra and
differential equations! It's simple addition and maybe some division.

The big issue is, of course, when somebody feels they are getting the
short end of the stick, meaning paying for someone else's indulgence.

For almost all of my Las Vegas dining and imbibing I almost always use
cash. A few years ago at Pinkfest (in Chicago but a DLV-ish group) I was
the only one out of a table of 10-12 who paid cash. All others paid with
credit cards. This was a formerly favorite restaurant which had recently
changed management.

The waiter went from person to person writing up a portion of the check
on each CC slip and finally came to ME expecting me to pay with cash,
the balance, which was well over $200! Yes, I went into total b*tchmode
and the settlement was stressful and awkward! There was a lot of bill
padding and upselling that we were not totally aware of! Fortunately
nobody in our party objected to paying her fair share, but the incident
sure exposed the aggressive and very intentional padding of the bill!
No, we've never been back!

Anyway, I personally do not consider check splitting a big deal, but we
do have some who do feel that they've paid more than their fair share
WRT shared-check situations at DLV.

The option receiving the highest peg count on our recent survey was "I
don't have problems splitting checks" and the second highest peg count
was "Assist with splitting ..." and I'm more than willing to step in, if
needed, and do the math for a table that's having issues.

Dr Victoria has us set for Wednesday, because other than Monday or
Tuesday evening, the puppetry penis show is in the showroom. Any other
day would work if we are just doing a lunch event there.

They let me see the last half hour of the show this last Friday evening
and these two nude guys do some creative things with their genitals that
probably hurts somewhat. The show is worthwhile to see for anyone into
something like that.

The show room is quite nice with the back 2/3rds of seating raised up
about 3' or so and a good sound system. The stage is nice with a camera
that projects on to the back wall of the stage (sorry Valorie, no pole).

The bar is gone because their for profit business can't serve alcohol
and no BYOB. Drinks can be purchased next door and brought in though.

The large lobby is really nice for socializing and the museum has lots
of new exhibits with admission being offered to us at $10.
