Holiday greetings:
Happy (belated) Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Festivus, and Happy New
Year from the PM Team, Annie, Bev, JoAnn. :)
Unless things that are earthshaking in nature arise, this will be the
last ORG mailing of the 2015 calendar year. We plan to resume ORG
mailings during the first full week of January.
One item to note and to keep in mind is that compared to many recent
years, we're a bit "behind the power curve" regarding the depth of our
programming at this point in time relative to the start of our event.
This means that when we actively resume the planning in January, we do
need to quickly tie up a few loose ends and put our programming on the
front burner.
Katie has introduced the subject of daytime activities below. This has
spun off into a very active thread in the Discussion Forum. One
"homework assignment" over the holidays (didn't you just HATE those!) is
to review that thread, add to it with your thoughts, if you like, and
prepare for a quiz on the first day of class. The discussion thread is
on line here:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/mydlv/mainforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3332
Another item toward the front of our plate when we resume will be
finalizing the days for our major activities. Please be thinking about
this as well. We appear to show a preference, but not a consensus, for
one particular strategy.
. . . . . . . . . .
Beverly has stated that she is willing to coordinate one session of golf
and has made contact with the course for a Tuesday tee-time.
There was discussion of, and a desire indicated, for more than one golf
session, following our 2015 event.
If two or more golf sessions are to happen, we will be needing
volunteers to coordinate them. If you are interested in coordinating
additional rounds of golf, now is the time to say so.
Don't be shy. :)
We'll give you contact information and guidance on how to proceed.
No, they do not bite! They are familiar with the nature of our group and
they want our business. :)
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks to all who have re-registered, as it gave the registration system
a very good shake-down.
As of this time we have a total of 34 individuals signed up to attend,
which is more than we had total in 1997 and 1998. If anyone had any
issues with re-registration, please let us know.
If anyone on this list did not get a first-round re-registration email,
please be assured that you're not being snubbed! The most likely reason
is that the email address on your DLV registration does not match the
address you use for this list. Just send us a note and we'll force the
re-registration email to you.
We'll be sending out the large batch of re-registration e-mails as soon
as we get the final Flamingo hotel reservation from Beverly.
. . . . . . . . . .
Delaney has stated that the Big Sister Team will be handling roommate
matching for DLV 2016. The roommate sharing screen has been re-optioned
into the registration system. If any of you wish to share a room, please
re-visit your Attendee Information Portal, go to "Update Registration",
and click the "Roommate" button.

Daily time crunch scheduling:

I see the stated times you offer, however, I'm not one be governed by
the minute -- thus I would say ---
Afternoon activities are best between 1:30pm to 4:00pm for the "safe
zone" to start and finish.
Just an observation....

Dean Martin Hologram:

In 2016, there is to be a Dean Martin Hologram show opening in LV.
I have only been able to find general information on it, not the
specifics (location, dates, cost). I was thinking about putting on the
DLV schedule, if timing works - although I'm not altogether sure: Is
this just too creepy or will it be amazing :-)?
If anyone, particularly the LV girls, hears any of the details, please
let me know.

Daytime activities:
(More discussion, with many examples, of daytime activities appears in
the DLV Discussion Forum at the link cited above.)
Katie writes:
Hi.
I am getting a bit concerned that we do not have much happening through
the day at DLV as the day trips used to be a big part of the week for
the girls but they have slipped to a distant 4th or 5th spot on the
calendar and I wondered if wondered if after coffee one morning some of
the girls might like to visit the Western Store on the Strip just past
the Airport exit on the right. It is quite large inside and has some
really interesting clothes and various trinkets for the purchasing of
gifts thereof. If it went well we could do a light lunch somewhere
simple but nothing definite as I kind of like to ad lib my way around
Vegas when I am there depending on what type of day it is and who shows
up.
I though maybe doing it as a small group thing if the right people show
up for coffee and are interested enough and it is only 10 minutes drive
South. It would be something different to do so it might gather some
casual interest. I would suggest that this should start from The
Starbucks in the Flamingo and we take one or two cars along. All people
dressed appropriately of course and I really would prefer no admirers
along unless they are already with someone. No disrespect to them, This
is just my thing and not meant to hurt any feelings. They of course will
be welcome to show up at the store if they wish to. This should fill a
morning spot on the schedule and possibly encourage other day activities
which do not need an appointment.

Annie responds:
I do admit that we've tended to have fewer cultural, recreational, and
participatory activities during the day over the last few years.
This has been brought to my attention not only regarding DLV but also in
regards to Pinkfest in Chicago.
I want to thank those who have participated in the Discussion Forum
thread, and it's my hope that we can move things forward and have at
least one cultural/recreational/participatory activity during each day
of our event.
A few comments on some of the ideas that have come forward ...
Golf (full-size, full-course type) has been the most popular of the
recurring daytime activities and at least one session will happen this
coming year. For those who don't want to spend all day on a full course
there have been suggestions of ...
Mini golf: We've done this (at least) once in our history. IIRC it had
a reasonably great turnout.
Ditto with bowling.
Lake Mead outing: This is a fairly easy one to coordinate, but there are
some concerns about the weather. It's a very relaxing and enjoyable tour
around the lake, and can pair quite nicely with about anything else in
the Boulder City area.
Skydiving: Not my thing. Beverly did it once. Anybody wanna coordinate
it as a DLV activity? How about this, I'll watch!
Valley Of Fire: Another very relaxing and scenic drive. You can either
go Couch Potato and view things from the car or rough it and climb the
stairs up Atalatl Rock (or however you spell it!).
Shiloh Horse Rescue: Complete with spitting alpacas, ankle-biting dogs,
and a wrangler who aspires to perform SRS. This will happen again this
coming year. Thanks, Vera!
DLV Slot Tournament: We could probably get the Flamingo or one of their
sister properties to help us out with this.
Shopping: It's been done several times, and even recently if you count
things such as Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet. IMAO, things like this will
have a much greater demand if the shops visited have a very broad
general interest and the price ranges are within reason.
Pinball Museum: This will happen again this coming year. If Cami does
not wanna do it again, I'll do it! :) It was a blast! :)
Hike or Ski Mt Charleston: Very weather-dependent, particularly for
skiing, but they tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that ski season does
often times extend into March.
Swimming: We haven't done this for many years. Anybody wanna take this
one on?
Tennis: Our CET contact people could probably help us out with the
reservations and arrangements.
Roller Derby: We actually had this on the schedule once, but for some
reason (forget?) it was scrubbed. There is a track available, which does
require signing a waiver a mile long, but it's possible.
Several various suggestions were mentioned all involving railfanning of
one type or another. It's always surprised me that there's such a
crossover between the TG and railfan communities.
Those suggestions, alone, are more than enough to fill our our daytime
schedule for all of the days of our event. One thing that these all have
in common is that they will take one or more of us to make them happen.
Now is the time for you (yes, YOU) to please be thinking of which of the
above activities (or others of your own choosing) you would be willing
to coordinate or assist with! That's a take-away for all of us. :)

Show:
Delaney writes:
I mention this as a possibility. I didn't want to put it out on dlvdisc,
unless you all agree, as it precedes DLV.

Mid week Show and dining:
Katie writes:
Hi Gang.
I think that the addition of a nice upbeat Mid week show would help us a
long the tracks a bit. So with that in mind how about this?
Steve Wynn's ShowStoppers - Showtimes, Deals & Reviews | Vegas.com
This is at The Wynn Resort and would give us a chance to dress upscale
for an evening out and there are Buffet Show tickets available too which
makes a whole night out easier to plan. The price is not as you might
think for the Wynn resort and with a Wynn buffet thrown in it might be a
really nice new event for our calendar.
What do you think Gang?
