Org List:
This is the DLV 2014 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Various items:
This mailing covers topics other than the Welcome Celebration.
We'll have a mailing covering the Welcome Celebration discussion in a
few days.
The Welcome Celebration survey is in progress and by next week we will
have some data regarding the preferences of the Teeming Millions.
Speaking of which ... :) ... if you haven't taken the survey yet, it's
on line here:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/2014wcsurvey.html
Responses from you, the volunteers, are encouraged. :)
. . . . .
If you're planning some activities which do not yet appear on the
schedule, please select timeslots, even if tentative, so we can start
getting an idea of our overall "fit".
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Let's review the schedule:
Although we are ahead of the curve in our programming phase, it will be
good to review the overall schedule and see where things stand.
We are in no hurry. Timeslots are filling and there are plenty of
openings for everything that has been discussed and then some.
It appears that all of our larger and most of our medium size activities
are covered. Our main need over the next couple of months is to plan
the smaller activities to round out our schedule.
We won't really be focusing on weak spots this time, since we still
have a number of things that are in the works but have not been
assigned timeslots.
We will not be covering Monday evening, Thursday evening, or Friday
evening this go-round since all of those potentially depend on our
Welcome Celebration plans.
. . . . . . . . . .
Obvious and possible omissions:
Other than shooting, we don't have much of anything recreational or
outdoorsy this year. We haven't had a side trip for several years. A
re-run of something like Red Rock, Valley Of Fire, or Shiloh Horse Ranch
could work. Springs Preserve, as mentioned in a previous item, flies
under the radar and could be a combined lunch and recreational thing.
There's always clamoring to "bring back the boat trip" (see below) on
the yearly surveys. This has not happened for several years. Very little
"grunt work" involved. Everybody buys their own ticket. This has been
paired with a lunch in the Boulder City area on occasion.
Shopping. Cited as a fave off and on. FISM keeps coming up over and
over. Due to their hours, the only possible day for this is Friday.
Commercial activities:
Kandi. Please select timeslots for the Bare Escentuals sessions when
you can. These will most likely be very popular.
Aejaie? Are you planning anything for Carla's Boutique this year?
Those who are in touch with Harmony Nails and Glamour Boutique please
check signals with them and see what they would like to do this year.
. . . . . . . . . .
Circling back to our Top Five:
As we kicked off our planning, you will recall that we had you, the
volunteers, pick out your Top Five suggestions from those on the survey.
We're very happy to report that the top three of those will be happening!
+Dancing At Paris (5)
+Frank Marino's diva show (4)
+Night of Soiled Doves (3)
Others appearing in the various Top Five lists will be happening as well,
such as:
+Golf (2)
+Surrender Night Club at Encore (2)
+Shooting Event (2)
+EHM
Others have been mentioned as favorites but no action has been taken on
them yet.
+Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet (2)
+Boat trip to Hoover Dam (2)
+Morning/daytime outdoor hike & photo excursion (2)
+observation wheel
+Garden Party
+Zip line Fremont street
+Bowling at The Red Rock (or anywhere else)
For those who want to do a dining option but don't know where, these
were cited by name on the survey:
+Guy Fieri - the Quad,
+Blue Ox
+Serendipity III
+Mon Ami Gabi
+McCormick & Schmick's
+Gallaghers at NY
+Pasta Mia West
+Cafe Bellagio
. . . . .
+High Tea
Marilyn and Danielle have first refusal rights to host(ess) this in 2014.
Marilyn? Danielle? Any plans?
. . . . .
+A swimming pool event.
This may not be practical this year. Many pools are not open in early
April and those which are tend to be very cold! An indoor pool may be
a possibility but few hotels have those. (Tropicana did at one time
have an enclosable pool but this may have changed with remodeling.)
+Art tour
Yes, the true artsy-type Art Tour does get a consistent following. We do
not have anything like this on the schedule so far this year and any
afternoon (or morning) would work.
. . . . . . . . . .
Let's go over day by day ...
+Sunday, March 30:
+ 10:00am: Religious services (Metropolitan Community Church) - sv
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
Sunday afternoon is wide open for perhaps something touristy, outdoorsy,
recreational, cultural, etc.
Sunday evening is shaping up nicely. Thanks to Valorie for getting
things moving for this! :)
+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Mob Bar Happy Hour (Mob Bar) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dining options (various)
+ 7:00pm: Mob Bar Dinner (Mob Bar) - ms
+ 8:30pm: After-dinner options (various)
+ 8:30pm: Scavenger Hunt (Mob Bar) - ms
+ 8:30pm: Fremont Street Experience (Fremont Street) - ms
We will need at least two more HH and dining options for Sunday. The
one we have (Mob Bar) is casual and informal so something upscale,
ethnic, or special-interest would work well.
It would be ideal if the Sunday dining options were centered around
the downtown area, but this is not absolutely imperative. There are,
however, countless dining options in the immediate downtown area. Grotto
at Golden Nugget has been mentioned. Downtown Denny's (or - LOL - Heart
Attack Grill) could work as well. The Tony Roma's in the Fremont Casino
has worked well for us. Oscar's at the Plaza could be a higher-end
option.
If someone wants to take it, and it would require almost no Busy Work,
the Zip Line (as noted above) could go as an activity here. Any takers?
If anyone wishes to plan it, and thinks we need it, a "safe" alternative
to the wide-open in-the-spotlight Fremont Street activities could be a
good fit here. Too bad that D&D closed!
+ 10:00pm: Late-night options (various)
+ 10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris - Cabaret Lounge) - ms
+ 11:00pm: Beauty Bar (Beauty Bar) - ms
Question: Do we want to keep Dancing At Paris on the schedule for Sunday
or let Beauty Bar be kind of our only late evening function?
. . . . .
+Monday, March 31:
+ 7:30am: Katie's Koffee Korner (Quad - Betty's Cyber Cafe) - ms
+ 11:00am: Studio Lites Open House (Studio Lites) - sv
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
Monday afternoon is wide open. See Cami's note below.
We also have some tentative plans for Bare Escentuals on Monday (and
possibly other days as well).
+ 5:00pm: New attendee Welcome and Orientation (tba) - mv
See note below on this. Other venue suggestions would be appreciated.
. . . . .
+Tuesday, April 1:
+ 7:30am: Katie's Koffee Korner (Quad - Betty's Cyber Cafe) - ms
+ 9:00am: Diva Las Vegas Invitational Golf (TBA) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
Golf is a popular activity, but it will not exhaust the pool of potential
participants for anything else. We could do about anything on Tuesday
morning or afternoon. Touristy, recreational, commercial dot dot dot.
+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Hofbrau Happy Hour (Hofbrauhaus) - ms
+ 6:00pm: Ruths Chris Happy Hour (Ruths Chris - Harrahs) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Eating Out Night (various)
+ 7:00pm: Ruths Chris option (Ruths Chris - Harrahs) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Hofbrau option (Hofbrauhaus) - ms
We will definitely need more HH and dining options for Tuesday evening.
About anything other than steak or German would be a good fit. There is
talk of a Continental option but that has not been scheduled yet.
Some kind of an inexpensive dining option would work well!
+ 9:00pm: Mainstream-Alternative Night (various)
+ 9:30pm: Frank Marino Show (The Quad) - ms
+ 10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris - Cabaret Lounge) - ms
We have one show, which is informal and reasonably priced. A higher-end
show would be a good fit, as well as something like the Wax Museum, a
Strip Tour, Eiffel Tower, Linq Project (observation wheel) etc.
A higher-end "Bar Crawl" such as last year's Audrey Tour would also work
well here and could end up meeting the rest of the group at Paris.
. . . . .
+Wednesday, April 2:
+ 7:30am: Katie's Koffee Korner (Quad - Betty's Cyber Cafe) - ms
+ 9:00am: Pistol and Rifle Shooting (TBA) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
+ 2:00pm: Pole Dance Instruction (Pole Fitness Studio) - ms
Shooting is a popular special-interest activity. Pole dancing will be
very popular again this year. However, neither can handle nearly all of
our people so there is plenty of room for about anything else.
+ 6:00pm: Dinner (Pahrump Valley Winery) - ms
Do we want a local dining option, for those not doing NSD?
+ 7:30pm: Night of the Soiled Doves (Private facility) - mv
Likewise, do we want a local second-track option against NSD?
They say that there will be no capacity limit for NSD this year, so this
will most likely be a heavily-attended activity.
. . . . .
+Thursday, April 3:
+ 7:30am: Katie's Koffee Korner (Quad - Betty's Cyber Cafe) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
Thursday daytime is still wide open. Commercial, recreational, touristy,
outdoorsy, shopping, about anything would be a good fit.
. . . . .
+Friday, April 4:
+ 7:30am: Katie's Koffee Korner (Quad - Betty's Cyber Cafe) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (tba) - ms
+ 3:00pm: Macy's Makeovers, session 1 (Macy's FSM) - ms
+ 3:45pm: Macy's Makeovers, session 2 (Macy's FSM) - ms
+ 4:30pm: Macy's Makeovers, session 3 (Macy's FSM) - ms
Again, still room Friday morning. About anything would fit. Fantastic
Indoor Swap Meet anyone? Very low-maintenance. Easy ticket to voting
status. :) Vera has first refusal rights to host(ess) this one.
Friday afternoon has the Macy's sessions, but those are very limited
in capacity. Almost any general or special interest activity would do
well here.

Beverly writes:
Let's add a plan for an outing on Thursday morning at 9:00. We will go
to Red Rock Canyon for hiking and photo ops. I may try find another
outside activity for Wednesday opposite the shooting activity for those
of us not into guns who want something else to do. I will give more
thought.
. . . . .
Annie responds:
Thanks Beverly, Red Rock is on the schedule. Please let us know if
and when you wish to add something else. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
SO activities:
Angela writes:
Hi,
I was made aware by some SO's that nothing is planned for the partners
to do during the Diva week. They wish to have a kind lunch or other
daytime event to have the opportunity to talk with each other about the
husbands without the husbands. For them it is a bigger fear to be
recognized with the husband in public than for us. Maybe it is a food
for thought !
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
We've had "SO Only" activities in the past but not in recent years. Only
one of these, IIRC 2003, had any significant turnout. In more recent
years we've had "SO and Partners" activities on occasion with a modest
turnout at times.
Typically these have been a luncheon of some type, a second-track in
additional to our regular recurring lunch.
The schedule is wide open for any SO related activities that our
volunteers choose to plan. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that
we do get a meaningful number of male SOs, TG-TG couples, and various
other nontraditional bondings. Please keep this in mind when planning.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Coordinator photos:
One thing we want to try this year is to include a small photo of
as many of the primary Coordinators as we can on the final detailed
schedule and the tabular schedule. This is, of course, so those who
wish to identify the person in charge of the activity can more easily
do so.
This will be strictly OPTIONAL and it is an opt-in process. No pressure
to participate, other than occasional reminders, will happen.
For those who wish to participate in this, we will need you to submit or
designate a particular photo to be used.
This should be a recent recognizable real-life photo of you which gives
a clear face view.
The final image will be sized to about 100-some pixels high, exact size
not known at this time. This will be similar in size to the typical
avatar photos used on phpBB (such as MyDLV) and vBulletin systems.
I (Annie) will do the busy work of sizing and doing minor correction for
color/brightness/contrast for you.
You can submit or designate a photo which you wish to be used for this
in several ways, including:
1. Reply to this mailing (or use any of our common e-mail addresses)
and file attach it using any sane method.
2. Give us the URL of a photo on the web which you want us to use.
3. Say that you want to use your MyDLV avatar.
We'll assure you that these photos will not be used for any other
purpose than the final DLV 2014 schedule.
Please submit these at your convenience. If you are at all confused
about this or need assistance, please yell. :)

Volunteer:
(Although this came in response to the Welcome Celebration mailing, it's
really more relevant to the general organizational discussion and was
moved here.)
Robin G. (Robin with an "I") writes:
I am fairly new to Diva Las Vegas, and not quite sure what you are
looking for in the way of a welcome Celebration venue.
Last year after Diva Las Vegas was over, I stayed a few extra days. I
had diner one night at Lawry's. It is famous for the prime rib. It is
kind of upscale, and a little on the expensive side. But the food and
service is excellent. They have separate party rooms available. Here is
a link to the website.
http://www.lawrysonline.com/lawrys-primerib/las-vegas/private-events/business-social
Just a suggestion.
Also I signed up to volunteer this year. Not sure what I can do, but I
will be available to help out as needed upon arrival.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Thanks, Robin.
First of all, thanks for volunteering. We will definitely use you and
we'll give you some ideas on how you can help out.
As to what we want for a Welcome Celebration setting, we want what will
give us the best participation and enjoyment, and our survey which is in
progress will help us zero in on what will do just that.
A place like Lawry's probably would not work for our Welcome
Celebration, simply due to the price point. It would, however, make an
excellent selection for a smaller dining activity on any of various
other evenings.
Lawry's in Chicago has become a favorite of Pinkfest (although one of
our senior volunteers - anyone's ears burning? - did not particularly
care for her dinner last month) :( and the one in LV could very well
become popular with DLVers as well.
If you wish to get involved as a DLV volunteer, host(ess)ing a dining
activity is a very easy way to start, and a quick ticket to voting
status.
It can be incredibly simple. (Simple is good, right, Ginger?) :)
For a minimalist approach, simply name a place and agree to be there
and welcome the others and coordinate things. Break the group up into
table-size groups of 3-6 and use available tables. Very little busy
work or formality.
You can get more elaborate if you wish, and some do, but that's up
to you.
We'll help you with such things as sign-up, headcounts, contact
information, etc.
Another thing we'll have a need for are lower-key daytime activities.
Touristy things, recreational things, outdoorsy things, use your
imagination. :)
If you need specific suggestions on what to plan, let us know. :)

Wig care:
Cami writes:
On another note, a women from SLC who owns a wig company here, is
willing to come to Vegas to host a seminar on wig care, styling and of
course is looking for new clients. We can plug her into a timeslot
before or after I host the Beading Party. This way two events can be
held, one hour each or so, so folks can do both at one location.
There is a possibilty that Spotlight Lounge might be willing to host us
and they have a long Happy Hour for those that care to cocktail.
The wig seminar might be best on Monday, so girls can do there wig in a
style or perhaps by a new one for that night's WC.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
The daytime schedule is wide open on Monday. FCFS! Just pick the
timeslots.
One possibility from looking at the schedule {wheels turning} if you
have this at the Spotlight is to segue' these activities into the
"Newcomer Welcome and Orientation" if the chosen main Welcome
Celebration venue will not work for this. Spotlight is about as "safe"
and comfortable as we can get, and I'm sure they would appreciate the
extra bar business prior to the evening hours.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hotels for DLV 2014:
No comments have been received regarding the suggested hotels for DLV
2014.
If there are no objections to declaring the previously-submitted list of
hotels as our suggested hotels for DLV 2014 during the next list cycle,
we'll consider this to have carried by consensus.
If there are objections, we'll vote. Those of voting status please watch
your inboxes during this next list cycle. :)

Makeovers:
Robyn (with a "Y") writes:
Just Curious.
Is there a reason why makeovers are on the last day?
If not, would it be better if it was on the Monday so all the gals can
utilize all of there new techniques for the rest of the D L V days.
. . . . . . . . . . .
The reason cited for the Macy's makeovers being on Friday is so those
participating could be ready for the big closing evening.
We will have other makeover options. There will be some Bare Escentuals
makeover sessions toward the beginning of the week as well, but they
have not been placed on the schedule yet.

Golf update:
Danielle writes:
Just wanted to let you know that I followed up on Mindy’s golf course
recommendation, and it works! Greens fees, cart and range balls are $59,
which is a jump from Desert Rose, but not outrageous. I’m negotiating on
lunch, but it should be in the $10 to $15 range, with a choice. Which I
think is reasonable today, as well.
I haven’t finalized all this yet, so please keep the details private for
now.
However, I think we can say that we’ll be teeing off on Tuesday, April
1, at 9 am at Wildhorse Golf Club in Henderson, NV.
www.golfwildhorse.com
. . . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Danielle.
We don't need to publish any details for some time, so please keep us in
the loop as things develop.
