Updates:

There is most definitely a degree of interest in the Artisan.

The way the wind appears to be blowing, the Artisan appears to
be a likely candidate for both a suggested hotel and for the
main part of our opening celebration.

For those who may be opposed to the use of the Artisan, please
suggest alternatives which meet our needs.
. . . . . . . . . . .

Some of you have noticed that we had a very significant systems
issue last Friday. This involved the necessity of reloading the
server which serves DLV's web services from scratch. No data
were lost. Nost services are now back on line, but the main MyDLV
section is still not ready for prime time.

It does not appear that any e-mail has been lost. If you sent in
anything and it appears to have fallen into a black hole, please
resend or remind.

JoAnn's Words:

It may seem we are starting to blur the (i) hotel listing and (ii)the
event scheduling.

So let the discussion go forward as we address feedback to each aspect.

Regarding the Artisan: I think Annie under the concept of "expanding
the strategy" has some good suggestions on the dining during the
Opening Welcome Celebration venue.

So my "words" --- maybe let the Welcome Event be at a site where
"options" for dinner are available while having another site [or two]
close-by.

Again, some flexibility, but with an understanding that the selected
Opening Site is the main opening event location.

Other sites to the Artisan need to be suggested, and in the least, they
may be on the list for other evenings during the DIVA Week.

Keep ideas coming. Great "brainstorming" occurs when we reserve the
"judgement" until later.

Expanding our strategy:

Let's now expand on our basic strategy for the upcoming event.

We've received no objections to the basic six-day strategy posted
in the last mailing, so we're taking this as approval, or at least
consent to the day-to-day layout.
. . . . .

Diva Las Vegas was a recurrent topic at last week's Pinkfest in
Chicago, as most of those attending this year's Pinkfest also
attended last April's DLV, and several of those are active DLV
volunteers. Nothing earthshaking was discussed, but plenty of
very good feedback came out. The Welcome Celebration and the
Erotic Heritage Museum were mentioned specifically as favorites.

The consensus appeared to be that the Artisan was about the best
venue there was for a large opening celebration.
. . . . .

Let's discuss some general and specific strategic details ...

+Sunday: MULTI - slow start evening

We can use our lessons learned from last year's first evening to
create a multi-track evening, with no activities very intense, and
none featured above the others. We need a few options for dining,
some safe, some very mainstream, some plain, some fancy, but when
taken as a whole, covering just about everyone's desires, whims,
and comfort levels.

Follow this with low-impact social and/or entertainment options,
with at least one being "safe" in nature and another being open
and unquestionably mainstream with a capital M.

Specific lessons learned: Don't have any two within a few blocks
of each other, and don't have any two be essentially similar in
nature.
. . . . .

+Monday: MAX - Welcome Celebration

The Big Burning Question with regard to our Welcome Celebration
is along the line of if the maximum-attendance gathering should
also include a meal.

One idea which was discussed, with respect to the Artisan and the
limitations on the food service there, was to not post a specific
dinner time, not take dinner sign-ups, but to simply state that
food service will be available before, during, and after the WC
and that immediate dinner seating will not be available at peak
arrival times.

Our Welcome Celebration typically runs its course in three hours
max.

Do we have any thoughts and comments regarding the Welcome
Celebration and the availability of, or the necessity of food
service?
. . . . .

+Tuesday: MULTI - various evening activities

Several dining options, none of them featured above the others,
and several activity options of all types. In the past we've
called this Eating Out Night and Mainstream-Alternative Night.
. . . . .

+Wednesday: ANCHOR - feature activity, other options

Sarah has called Dibs on Wednesday for the Erotic Heritage Museum
as the featured activity.

Dining options will be necessary, of course, (at least) one
second-track option would be appropriate, and perhaps one or
more post-EHM activities would work nicely as well.
. . . . .

+Thursday: ANCHOR - feature activity, other options

Sarah called Dibs on Wednesday for the EHM, so I (Annie) am gonna
call Dibs on Thursday for the Limo Tour as a featured activity.

The Limo Tour, of course, has some hard limitations on the number
of people it can handle, so at least one alternate-track activity
will be needed.

We usually have a medium-size dining activity prior to the Limo
Tour. That's not in stone, but it's been a nice fit. A show will
also work nicely prior to the Limo Tour as we've had sometimes
in the past.

The Limo Tour ends after midnight. It's kind of been a tradition
to follow the Limo Tour with the Charles Bar, and there does not
seem to be any reason to break that tradition. :)
. . . . .

+Friday: MAX - Farewell Bash

We've had very strong endings the last two years, both with the
same type of activity, HH, Dinner, and QST at Bahama Breeze. We
also had great showings at Paris afterwards.

Do we want to pursue the same type of ending bash, or look at
new ideas.

Thoughts?

Maps and other geekoid stuff:

Sherry writes:

While the Erotic H Museum event was a big hi-lite of DLV 2011 for
me, I got lost both going to and leaving the museum! I was using
the official DLV map that I printed and the tourist maps given
away all over Vegas.

In fact, using those maps, I got lost looking for many venues and
addresses and I'm pretty good with maps! Yes, I realize "everyone"
uses GPS's these days. However, in case there's a few other un-techies
out there like myself, maybe u could publish a more detailed Vegas
map next year? Especially involving hard to find event venues such
as the EHM?

Thanks for all your efforts!
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Sherry.

We do have some good news for you.

First of all, yes, last year's map sucked. There's no other term
for it! It was intended to be printed out and handed out in hard
copy form, but that never happened and the webified version just
did not display well or print well on home computer printers. :(

For maps this coming year, there are two approaches. The first
will be a Google map with activity locations and suggested hotels
noted. Those who need turn-by-turn directions can get them. Those
who just need a high-level view can get that too. If they want a
hardcopy, they can print it.

The second will be incorporated into the new tabular schedule,
and you can see a rough demo of how that will look. We used this
year's Pinkfest (just concluded) as a proof of concept and shake
down run of some new schedule displays. These will remain on line
for at least a few more weeks, until we clear it and start doing
the DLV 2012 schedule.

Two versions of the new tabular schedule, neither of which are
truly ready for prime time, are on line. Look here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/maincal.html

and/or here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/maincal2.html

>From the main schedule you are able to click on the various links
and "drill down" to the activity details, then to the venue info,
and then finally to a Google map of the venue.

Try it. Feedback is appreciated.

(The above functions have been verified as working since the outage.)
