Moving toward an end:
Here is what I think our best approach is ...
I think it's best if we survey the masses, as suggested,
and a draft of the proposed special mailing appears
below.
I would like to launch this tomorrow, so if there are
any serious objections or any concerns with the wording
and such, please let them be known ASAP.
Thanks to all for the other comments, concerns, and
suggestions.

Draft of special mailing:
Unless there are objections of some significance, this will
go out as a special mailing tomorrow.

Feedback requested:
Ladies? (Gentlemen?) we need your comments and feedback!
We are making tentative plans for an upscale dress-up
formal affair to serve as our ending bash for Diva Las
Vegas 2010. This is to happen on Friday, April 23.
Approximate timeframe for this set of activities will
be 7:00pm to 11:00pm or so.
This will require substantial planning and some up-front
costs, so it's very important that we are assured that
there is a demand for such an affair before we "pull
the trigger" and commit to it!
Please read the description below and please let us
know if this is something you WOULD or WOULD NOT like
to attend, considering all factors such as theme, food,
timing, dress code, and price point.
No, we're not asking for a commitment to attend at this
time, just a good-faith response of whether or not you
would attend this at the upcoming DLV 2010.
To enter your response, either reply to this mailing or
make a brief comment on the DLV Discussion Forum on
the web at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlvdisc/
What we are most interested in is a response, YES or NO,
from those already signed up to attend DLV 2010 and those
who are planning to attend.
Some of the details are not yet in place, but in general,
the evening will consist of a Happy Hour, Buffet Dinner,
social time and possible light entertainment consisting
of such things as self-produced "pity party" type acts
(whether or not the term "Pity Party" is designated for
that portion of the program), possible karaoke and/or
dancing with a deejay, and/or a brief awards presentation.
The venue is a mainstream general-public facility but the
area we would occupy is off to the side of the main bar and
dining areas.
Food: This will be a buffet dinner, multiple entrees, exact
menu to be determined but something like a meat dish, a
chicken dish, and a pasta dish with various salads, sides,
and desserts.
Cost: This will be approximately $55-$60 per person. There
will most likely be a requirement for prepayment in person
during DLV week. This will include food, incidentals, but
not alcohol. Cash bar will be available.
Dress: It's intended that the theme and the dress for this
activity be upscale, with "black tie optional" dress. For
those unfamiliar with this term, in general, this means
that dressy and formal attire is prefered, but that "smart
casual" or "business casual" is acceptable.
For women, an evening gown or long dress is suggested. A
tea-length dress, suit, a cocktail dress of appropriate
length, pantsuit, or business casual separates will be
appropriate. Things such as tank tops, tee shirts, etc.,
will not be appropriate. Costumes, slutty/fetish outfits,
etc., likewise, will not be appropriate. For men, jacket
and tie is suggested, but business casual will be acceptable.
As we said, we are mostly interested in a YES/NO response
on this question, but comments are welcome. All comments
received may be forwarded to the DLV Discussion Forum unless
stated otherwise. Any alternative suggestions received will
be held until we have a solid yes/no on this activity.
Please consider all factors, including cost, when you make
your yes/no response. Any questions, concerns, clarifications,
etc., please respond to this mailing and ask.
Thanks.

Ending comments:
Jamie Renae writes (first-person, no quoting):
Even though I am not going to be there this year, I feel the need to
throw in my 5 cents worth.
The cost of the IAC event seems like more than many people will be
willing to spend. Especially the regulars. I would be cautious on
going out on that limb, of expecting a large turn-out.
If there is a minimum charge that someone needs to put up, it could
easily be lost.
I know that there are problems with filling the slot, but I don't see
that the B.O. West is that far out of town. It is an easy drive and in
a good area. If I were attending this year , I would be pushing for
that.
. . . . .
Thanks, Jamie.
I do agree that there is risk of low participation. That's why I
think it's important that we get an idea of what the rank and file
attendees think.
Several concerns state the risk of financial loss, and the risk
of the DLV/GB relationship should they take a bath on this.
I really don't see a major problem with filling the slot, as we
do have a couple of "drop-in" options such as Bahama Breeze or
Carluccio's, but I am hoping for something a bit more fresh and
"exciting" for this year.
The Blue Ox far-west may be an option, yes, but as of this time
we haven't ascentained if they are able and willing to host such
a thing. Remember this is Friday, one of the more busy nights
for bar regulars, and they may not want to be "closed for private
party" on Friday.

Kat writes (first-person, no quoting):
>Okay as I stated before if the ending bash is at the IAC we will
>attend but not eat there. I do understand the requirement of food.
>I would like to have an ending bash and 55 may be a bit much but we
>would swing it. I do understand some people will not. We will not eat
>there and that is our choice even if we have to pay for the food.
>The halloween party had some performances and were quite good and
>fit well so why are we so adamant the pity party must be unbundled.
The unbundling of the Pity Party is not a Done Deal<tm>, but that
appears to be the way the wind is blowing. It may be the case that
we have some kind of light self-produced entertainment at the Ending
Formal, but that the term "Pity Party" is not used for that part of
the program.
>The third point is this who is backing the down payment and payment?
According to the original proposal, that would be Amy at the Glamour
Boutique.
>I know there is a price point that will have to be met even if there
>is not enough attending to get it done. Amy is wonderful but if we
>leave her holding the bag I think it would be a very bad thing.
Yes, agree, and I think much of the hesitancy we have to commit to
this has to do with consideration for the underwriter (Amy) and
the risk of a financial loss.
>Vegas is a hotel town and having economic woes from what I have
>heard and seen. Has anyone considered a hotel ballroom? I can try
>by email but I do not live in Vegas.
First of all, we do appreciate the offer to help chase down an
alternate facility.
Speaking very freely here, the rented hotel ballroom is most
likely the point at which I would withdraw my support. It's
just too much like the stereotypical TG conventions. I'll be
willing to listen to any serious proposals that use a hotel
ballroom, but I think that's over the line into "too secluded"
territory. I don't envision something like that being able to
attract a critical mass of our attendees.
If you do want to do some legwork, I would suggest looking for
restaurants or clubs which for some reason do not appear on our
radar screen. Nora has a very good handle of what's available
out there in LV land, but it's possible that she, and we, have
missed something.
>Just a thought I will send out email today to Paris, Sahara, IP
>and Harrah's and see what kind of info I get and pass it on to
>you. Just thought on all of this.
If you wish to do so, you can go ahead and establish initial
contact, but I'm very sure that an ending bash in a hotel
ballroom would get less support, both from the ORG people
here and the Teeming Millions, than the proposed bash at the
Italian-American club.
Please remember that in order to attract a good turnout from
our gang, a venue must have a mainstream component, must have
some air of safety, and it must appeal to the broad general
interests of our participants.
>I am off to try and get a quick bit of info. I hope the ending
>bash is not called off.
The "Ending Bash", in one form or another, will not be called off!
I'm sure that we'll have some kind of a larger ending activity.
I seriously doubt that Friday evening will be announced as
"Free Time" on the schedule, but as of this point in time we
are uncertain as to what, exactly, the ending affair will be.
