One step forward, two steps back:

We've made some forward progress. If you look at the schedule
the way it now sits, it's much "fuller and rounder" than it
was before.

Special thanks to Marisa for a number of art-related and
social items, see below.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that we need to re-group and re-plan the
ending festivities.

Please read Nora's item (below) carefully.

This in essence puts the kabosh on our planned Pity-Formal
and leaves the ending bash and the Pity Party up in the
air.

It's not Nora's job to work around this and plan something
else. The job in all of ours, including me, Nora, and YOU!
This will not go away until we act on it. The way out is
the way through!

We need to, collectively, propose and discuss our options,
and solidify our plans.

The good news, if there is to be a silver lining in this
cloud, is that we do have about 2 1/2 months to plan, but
we do need to get cracking!

Please consider the ending affair to be the number-one
priority for us at this time. Please continue to work on
other things as well, but this is something that we need
do take care of.

Pity Party fans, I think we're back at the point that we
can entertain suggestions for a stand-alone Pity Party
type of activity again.

Nora has made some thoughts and comments below, and I have
too. Your turn! :)

Back to square 1:

Nora writes (first-person, no quoting):

I saw Amy earlier today and we discussed the motions determined
by the group.

I explained to her that the DLV forum felt the best way to go
would be to have two options.

1-Without food at approximately 30 dollars per person
2-With food at approximately 55 per person.

Amy's immediate reaction was that the non food option was
a non starter.

The Italian American club is a catering hall and the package
that was discussed was for a dinner. To have two tiers one
with dinner and the other without would be to difficult to
control and there would be no one to police the serving of
the food.

So we are back to square one.

We still need a closing venue and there are very few options
available to us.

We need a restaurant that will be willing to have our attendees.
Have ample room to serve a group of approximately 80-100. Be
willing to serve from and existing menu and provide individual
checks. Not requiring a signed contract or advance payment. Not
to mention being having a location easily accessible and not
having a bathroom issue.

I thought that having the formal as initially proposed would
be acceptable to the majority. We have been asking for a formal
event for years it looked to me that we had a very good proposal
at a reasonable cost.

We still have a little over three months to locate something
but time will be closing in.
. . . . .

Thanks for the report, Nora. :( And thanks for the effort. We
did give it a good try.

I'll offer my thoughts, everyone please feel free to add yours.

As to where to go from here, I think we need to ask and
answer a few questions ...

1. Do we want/need a large maximum-attendance ending bash?

2. How important is it to have a formal-theme activity?

3. What venues which we have used in the past might be
appropriate for any kind of a final-day dinner with social
time?

4. Do we want to consider venues we have never used before?
. . . . .

I'm almost tempted to suggest that the Pity-Formal could
go ahead as Amy wishes (food as part of the package, $55-ish
price point) but not as an exclusive single-track maximum
attendance activity. I don't think this is entirely out of
the question, but my gut feeling, knowing on hour our
people act and react, is that we would only have a crowd
of maybe 30-ish in number, well below the "critical mass"
point.

We may very well get the size of a crowd this year that
we could get that critical mass, even on a non-exclusive
activity. We're expecting at least 150, more likely 175
or so, and 200 is not out of the question by any means.

I don't think it's fair to our attendees of modest means
to offer only one featured activity with a $55-ish toll
"just to walk through the door" on the final evening. We
would most certainly need a second lower-priced option if
we kept the Pity-Formal with food included.

If we want to reconsider a restaurant-style ending
HH and dinner, the obvious ones that come to mind are
Bahama Breeze and Carluccio's. However, I would hate
to just grab at "something, anything" or some kind of
path of least resistance. We may also want to revisit
the possibility of that still-open Blue Ox.

I think it's worth circling back to other options we
did discuss earlier, such as:

The Pity-formal as something other than a max-attendance
final night affair, meaning things like on Wednesday as
a third track against QEAH and Trevi-Limo, or as a local
option against NSD. or ...

Adopt a "formal" theme for Trevi, which would segue quite
well into the Limo Tour. Have a separate Pity Party on
Tuesday as an option or on Thursday as a local option
against NSD.

Thoughts, gang?

Art tour and other ideas:

Marisa writes:

>I'll start with some activities I'd like to host or cohost.

>On Sunday late afternoon I'd like to have a tour at the
>Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art at Fremont street
>followed by happy hour and dinner at the new Firefly at
>the Plaza hotel.

Good ideas!

Done. Thanks. I'll get that on the schedule. I'll put
sign-up requested for headcount for the Art Tour and
no sign-up, just show up for Firefly. Please let us know
if you want any of that changed.

>On monday late afternoon before Hard Rock, a art tour at
>the City Center might fit in nice since its a half block
>away from meet and greet.

Again, I'll get that on the schedule. Thanks. Sign-up
requested for headcount.

>Then on tuesday late afternoon a tour at the Arts Factory
>would really be fun. There are a bunch of very interesting
>galleries and it would be a place for newbies, since it has
>a low amount of public exposure.

And once again, I'll get that on the scheule. I'll select
times for your various activities as place-holders. Please
look over the summary schedule below and send in adjustments
and such.

>I'm thinking about a dinner after the tour.

That will work fine. Please let us know the venue when you
have decided upon it.

>Later at night I'd like have an event at the Level 107 lounge
>in the tower at Stratosphere. They're starting an alternative
>lifestyle night on tuesday's so on.

Done. Got it. Thanks. :) No sign-up, just show up. Let us know
if you want a sign-up for it.

>Would a pre-event on Saturday night at PT's work?

Yes, I'm sure it would.

I'm hoping (>>HINT<< anyone!) that somebody would use PT's
as a dining option for Sunday or Tuesday, as it's a very
safe, comfortable place for newbees but not claustrophobic
for those with lots of public exposure.

There's no reason, however, that it can't also be used for
a pre-DLV thing on Saturday and I'm hard-pressed to think
of a better venue for such a pre-DLV get-together. Please
hold that thought, and bring it up when we talk about any
pre-DLV things.

>Hope some or all of this works.

Oh yes! Oh my yes! We appreciate the volunteer effort you
are putting forward! If you look at the schedule, the
first few days are now looking very well filled out and
offer a variety of options.
