Org List:

This is the DLV 2010 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Moving forward:

Let's continue discussion on various other things, including
possible dates, as the voting on Michelle's motion progresses.
. . . . .

One important note on voting, since this was the first vote of
the year and the e-mail list of the electorate has not been
proven, if you coordinated (or assisted with) a DLV activity
in either 2008 or 2009 and did NOT receive a special ballot
e-mail a few days ago, be sure to write in (just reply to
this mailing) and let us know.

If this is the case, please remind us of the specific DLV
activity you coordinated so we can adjust the records.
. . . . .

While the vote on the motion goes on, let's move along with
the discussion of the dates.

We now have the following timeframes under consideration:

1. April 18-23 (nominated, multiple seconds)
2. March 14-19 (nominated, pending second)
3. March 21-26 (nominated, seconded)
4. March 21-27 (nominated, pending second)
5. April 18-24 (nominated, seconded)

We will continue to accept timeframe nominations pending the
outcome of the current vote. Should Michelle's motion carry,
we'll reconcile all currently-seconded date sets with the
new ballot format and continue.

Please continue to discuss both the timeframe and the length
of the 2010 event.

Project Manager for 2011-2012:

JoAnn writes:

(first-person, no quoting)

Given the Diva Event is held in 2010 from April 18th through April
24th I am able to ---

Chair the Limo Tour
Assistant Chair the Art Tour

Also.... as a thought....

I would be willing to be the Co-Project Manager for 2010 with Annie,
and go forward as Coordinating Project Manager in 2011 and 2012.

The 2012 year will need to have a Co-Project Manager who would become
the Chair the following two years.

My concern is to assure how we can keep this very important event
have a "succession program" !!

With care.....JoAnn
. . . . .

Please join me in thanking JoAnn for stepping forward for this
most important DLV function!

I enthusiastically welcome JoAnn as a Co-PM for this coming
year. JoAnn and I have begun to discuss her roles off-line.

To others who may be interested in assuming a leadership role
in DLV, please be thinking ahead. If you think you may have
the interest and the skill set, please let us know if you are
interested in accepting a Co-PM position for 2011-2012 as a
step to assume the PM position for 2013.
. . . . .

Now! I would like everyone to please re-read JoAnn's very
first sentence!

Notice that JoAnn speaks out in favor of a 7-day DLV (April
18 - 24) AND in the same sentence volunteers for TWO of the
nontrivial activities!

If all proponents of a longer DLV would show this level of
commitment, I would have no issue with extending for the
seventh day!

Administrative Committee nomination:

Kimberly Kael writes:

>Consider me intrigued but one step shy of self-nominating.

Ok, in that case let me push you over the last step.

I nominate you (Kimberly Kael) for the Administrative
Committee.

Do I hear a second? (Yes, you may self-second.)

Do we have any other nominations for the expiring Admin.
Committee seat?

>After reading the content online I'm still unclear on what
>the specific duties would be. Can anyone clarify?

The general concept is that the Administrative Committee
takes care of the non-activity business of DLV.

The specifics of the Administrative Committee are outlined
here:

http://dlv/administ/admcom.html

The significant items we covered last year were:

1. Publicity and promotion (Brochures and flyers at other
TG events.)

2. Printed schedule (Done.)

3. Awards of recognition (Discussed, dropped, recipient
not present at DLV 2009.)

4. General hospitality, greeting, inclusion (Discussed
briefly, no particular action taken.)

5. "Banning", conditional registration, dismissal (Motion
presented to ORG, carried.)

6. Liability "hold harmless" boilerplate (Some discussion,
no action taken.)

>Through this fall I'll be coming out at work and going
>full-time so I may well have my hands fairly full. On the
>flip side, I'll also be thinking a lot about things I enjoy
>doing out so I may have more activity ideas this year!

The Committee's business is low-impact and low-maintenance.
There's very little, if any "busy work" involved. Things go
in spurts, whenever there's an item of business to handle.

Anyway, do we have a second? (or a self-second?)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Another motion on the floor:

Gina writes:

>There also needs to be a second motion, that is to have Annie
>continue as PM for this year, I duly make that motion and will
>make every effort to support her.

Thanks, Gina. I appreciate the statement of confidence.

At no time in our history has the equivalent position of PM
ever been contested, but if the gang feels that a more formal
motion or nomination is in order, I have no objection.

The floor is now open for a second on Gina's motion.

There were a number of similar reports last Monday and Tuesday.
Several, but not all, were from users of Yahoo.

As everyone knows, e-mail is not a perfect medium and the
Internet is subject to transient outages.

This particular issue corrected itself before word got to us
of the problem and we could investigate. (For the geeks among
us, it appeared to be some kind of a transient failure of the
lookup of either SOA and/or MX records for the geekbabe.com
domain.)

Should anyone have any difficulty getting mail to the ORG list,
I suggest the following:

1. Wait a few hours and resend. Most Internet disruptions will
self-resolve quickly. (E-mail systems normally transparently
re-send on an initial failure. This issue was obviously seen
as more of a serious or "hard" failure.)

2. Send me a note informing of the situation at: annie@annie.net
Although this domain shares some of the DNS and MX servers as
geekbabe.com, it did not appear to be affected by last week's
outage.

3. If you experience repeated and protracted difficulty, send
a note to: dlvemergency@yahoo.com

This is our "emergency back-up" e-mail for DLV. It's not checked
except in times of known e-mail issues, so please do not use it
unless there is a definite ongoing e-mail issue.
. . . . .

Another e-mail item, if you ever send anything in and don't
either see it in a subsequent mailing or at least a referral
to it, please write in and remind me. E-mail is not perfect,
nor are humans. I do not intend to ever ignore anything valid
which is sent in.

About the only thing prohibited on the ORG list are "Grand
Exit" or "FOAD" messages. Anything relevant to the event,
even if unpopular or controversial, should at least be
referred to in a mailing.

Activity volunteer:

Vivian Wells writes:

>Freemont street experience with Vivianann. on Saturday night.

Thanks, Vivian. I have this recorded.

The only thing I would ask, for now, is that you remain open
and flexible on the particular day of the week for this.

We don't yet know if DLV will indeed span a Saturday, and we
will probably not know at least for a few months where an
activity like this will best fit within the overall DLV
schedule.

>I hope I sent this to the right person

Yes, you did.

The correct address to send activity proposals, discussion,
etc., is: dlvorg@geekbabe.com

(When it is working, that is -- VBFG.)

If you have difficulty sending, see the notes above.

Dates for DLV 2010:

This is a collection of the the various more succinct date
comments and responses, including suggestions, nominations,
and seconds. Please feel free to respond to any and all.

Thanks, Cathy. The week beginning April 18 does appear
to have quite a bit of support.

Thanks, Kimberly.

Although we haven't taken a vote yet, the week beginning
April 18th. appears to be the most popular so far.

So seconded. Thanks, Kimberly.

Sarona writes:

>Length of DLV: hotel rates go up on Saturday nights, so

Yes, Saturday is the most expensive day to stay in Las
Vegas since it's bookended by two hotel nights which are
typically 25%-100% higher than the weekdays.

>I agree that I get burned out if we have a seven day DLV.

First of all, congratulations and best wishes! :)

What I might suggest you consider is some kind of a
celebration, belated reception or something, concurrent
with one of the larger DLV activities.

We've done this before at times and it's always worked out
well.

>I will second the April 18-23 or April 18-24 dates if they
>need to be seconded.

Thanks, Sarona. April 18-23 has been seconded, multiple times
and we'll note your second on JoAnn's April 18-24 nomination.

I agree. Scheduling in March in an attempt to assure ideal
weather may very well backfire and result in such things as
complaints about it being too cold on the golf course, as
we saw a few years back.

>So I second the April 18 time frame.

And MB continues ...

>I'm thoroughly confused.

It shouldn't be that confusing. The currently nominated
and seconded timeframes all appear at the top of this
mailing.

Should Michelle's current motion carry, we'll reconcile the
current nominations and seconds to break them up by calendar
week and start day/length.

>I vote for whatever week has the cheapest hotel rates. End of
>discussion.

The only week where I believe we need to be concerned about
hotel rates this coming year is that of NAB, which has not
been nominated or even suggested.

Those who claim to be in the know predict that next spring's
hotel rates will be higher than we saw this year, but not
out of line, except for high-demand times, of which NAB is
the only one which could possibly affect DLV.

The all-knowing also predict that we'll again see more of
a differential between weekday and weekend rates as the
economy recovers.
. . . . .

Vivian Wells writes:

>I like the Idea of the third week of April for DLV 2010.

>I would also like Sunday through Saturday of DLV activities.

Thanks Vivian, both of these are currently in nomination with
seconds.

Kumiko writes:

(first-person, no quoting)

I can see dlv providing a rich choice of events.

We can also have the same number of events, but spread out
between more days. Why do we have to have an increase
number of events to match the number of days?

Those that 'do their own thing' will continue to do so.
There is no attendance requirement to dlv events. Attendees
will go to the events they want to, and not go to those
they don't care to go to...and 'do their own thing' during that
time. Those that have made friends and have a reunion during dlv
will get together and 'do their own thing' if they don't want to
attend a dlv event.

Increasing the days, can reduce the number of multi track options
by putting those options on the other days. This allow more
people to try options they weren't able to try because
they tried something else that night. Ie they signed up
EON and went to Milano's, and also wanted to try Trevi.
They could try Trevi if it was put on another night.
It doesn't increase the number volunteers needed, its just
done on another night, and may increase the number of
attendance, and with less options, attendees will see other
attendees more often if all attend.

Having more days and same number of events can allow
attendees to rest between events, and may reduce no shows
due to being too tired or short prep time conflicts rushing
from one event to another all day, staying up all night, every
day.

Being left out is a concern, but scheduling can take care of
this, as long as there is a minimum of one activity per day or
a way of informing where attendees are meeting.

The spread out activities and open times can allow attendees
to meet on their own too with other attendees to develop the
friendships better in a better social/talking environment dlv is
providng, and whatever they do, might be different from
any dlv activity, and if its fun or workable, these attendees may
volunteer and offer it as a event the following year. It gives
time for attendees to think on their own, find new activities to
do in LV, and maybe present them as a event. Right now we
don't have that as part of dlv...people or groups looking for
new activities or events to do for dlv.

Being spread out can allow newbies and Big Sisters more time
to practice basics on their own, and not restricted by time to be at
certain events all day and night. Especially those that may be
a bit scared to go out, or new at cd-ing and are all 'thumbs' to
dressing and make-up. It allows time for the Big Sister and newbie
to go shopping if needed to get basic items.

Events like the Pity party during the Limo Tour may not
be separated for it was for those that didn't go to one,
would attend another.

Just some thoughts....
. . . . .

To answer your question regarding why do we have to have
an increase number of {activities} when we increase the
number of days, it's very simple. We don't want to increase
quantity at the expense of quality!

I may sound like I am opposed to a 7-day DLV this year.

Should the gang here come up with a bang-up 7-day slate of
dynamite activities, including a strong ending day and evening,
I'm all for it!

I just don't see the benefit to the DLV program as a whole of
stretching out and weakening the schedule in order to provide
some individuals with more opportunities to skip things! :(

#include <spock_needs_of_the_many.h>

The priority of DLV should be with group activities and
inclusive group participation.

Dates and temperature:

Kate writes (first-person, no quoting):

Hi.

I suggested March because I have been going to Vegas for a long
time and have been there in almost every month of the year and
March suited me better than May or even April which was nice but
not as convenient or temperature acceptable as March.

Late September is actually the very best time to go there as the
Hotel pools are still open and the temperature is perfect for
what we like to do do but I have brought up September before to
the Org and was told this was not an option.

I like wearing suits of all kinds, evening and day wear suits
and May is Way too hot for them.

Yes. I have been to Vegas in May several times for all 4 of it's
weeks more than once and it was "always" too hot to wear anything
with sleeves.

I love May too but not as Katie, It's too warm for daytime stuff
and I need to be comfortable or it doesn't work for me.

I am not being selfish, I am being practical and as this is a
request for suggested times, I can only give My personal
preference.

A footnote to this would be. I would host an event If I were
able to go in March or September but as I can't do May I
can't host an event.

Katie.
. . . . .

What I said when you brought up September last year was that
although we don't have any standing rules against it, I would
envision a September DLV if and only if absolutely nothing in
the spring was workable.

You are free to nominate any set of dates for consideration,
September or any time.

(Speaking of September, if I am correct, the climate of
September in Las Vegas is very close to that of May, the
month to which you object due to the heat. Locals, please
help me out here, am I correct on this or am I on drugs?)

DLV has traditionally occurred in the spring. Should there
be a serious proposal to change it to late summer or fall,
either for one year or in perpetuity, I don't think it would
get much traction, either from the volunteers or from the
Teeming Millions.
