Working toward conclusion:
This mailing contains only the items regarding the currently
open motion. Other items will appear in subsequent mailings.
To review, as there seem to be some misunderstandings of what
the current motion will and will not do. The motion on the
floor reads as follows:
<begin motion>
We should vote in two parts (at the same time) :
- The best week
- The days of the week (and therefore length of DLV)
<end motion>
That's it, nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't set any
week or any days/dates. It simply modifies what we've been
doing for several years now.
That's what we'll vote on as an up/down vote very shortly,
no dates mentioned on the ballot for this motion, just a
yes/no aye/nay on Michelle's motion.
Should this motion carry, the ballot for date selection will
have two items, one for the specific week (eg. the third week
in April) and the days of the week for DLV (eg. Sunday thru
Friday).
Should the motion fail, the method of voting for DLV dates
which is established by precedent will remain.
. . . . .
In reading the comments below, the most outspoken comments are
in favor of moving things along and settling this motion.
Let's keep the floor open for 24 hours for further comments on
this motion and then call the question.
We'll summarize any remaining comments in a mailing tomorrow
and if no items of major significance come in regarding the
motion, we'll proceed to a Call For Votes.
To keep things moving along, please limit the remaining
discussion to the current motion only. Meta-discussions,
points of order, technicalities, etc., will only delay the
vote on the motion.

So noted.
We'll allow one more day for any remaining discussion on the
motion and then call for votes.

Thanks, Kate.
As a clarification, Michelle's motion explicitly stated that
the vote on the week and on the days/length would occur at
the same time.

>In short, what's the point?
The point is that Michelle wishes to separate the decision of
the week of DLV (such as the third week in April) from the
decision of the length of DLV and the start/stop days.

I am neutral regarding this matter.

Trust me, I am trying to keep things simple. :)
>I thought the motion was to pick the week?
The motion by Michelle is to pick the week as one measure on
the ballot, and pick the length and start/stop days as another
measure on the same ballot.
>Let us do that and understand the week is defined from previous
>history to commence on a Sunday and end at midnight on a
>Saturday. Spare us all from going through this process of
>discussions again.
Actually, that definition only applies to two previous years,
2004 and 2005. All DLVs since 2005 have started on Monday.
Prior to 2004, DLV always started midweek and in most cases
spanned a weekend.
>Hopefully we can agree that the "week" is a Sunday through
>Saturday event.
I really don't think there is any agreement or binding
precedent on this as of now, and there's certainly no
standing rule which covers it.
>Now let us pick the week and have the discussion around that
>issue--only.. Thank you. Now pick the week
>I offer the motion of the Week of 4/18 - 4/24 in 2010 [the 3rd
>week of April].
I'm copying this over to the item covering the date
nominations and seconds. When this current motion is
complete, we'll circle back to the actual date selection
discussion.
>Hopefully we can move on and not have to spend weeks of
>discussion about the duration of the week before we discuss
>all of the possibilities of the week that this event could occur.
>Do I sound impatient. Yes, I am getting too old having attended
>too many DIVA Weeks over the years for this extended type of
>discussion for the sake of discussion.
All of us need to understand that with a group as diverse as
this one, there will be diverse needs, wishes, and ideas of
what DLV is and should be.
The dates are of EXTREME importance to some, for a very wide
variety of reasons, but others are willing to settle for about
any timeframe. Others consider the expediency of settling the
date question to be very important to them.
Now, as for what I want to see, and what I intend to do this
year as PM, is I want to see things move forward, but I don't
want to rush things to the point that valid needs and valid
opinions are dismissed or not considered.
I want to be fair to all, I want everyone's opinion to be
appreciated as valid from their point of view. I want
everyone who has anything to say on any issue to have their
say.
Anyway, we need to focus on the motion at hand, tabling any
actual date selection and metadiscussions until the current
motion carries or fails.
