This mailing:

Sorry if this mailing is a bit haphazard and scatterbrained.
I want to get it out before we launch the survey, which is
planned for Friday morning.

Next big follow-up step will be the Call For Photographs,
sometime early next week. Those who know the drill can
start sending them in. Those who don't, don't. :) :)
. . . . .

Thanks to all who tested the survey. It looks like it's ready
to roll out. Only a few minor issues were reported.

One correction, which I don't think justfies wiping and
everybody re-taking, is that the Pistol/Rifle shooting
was overlooked and added.

If you already answered the survey and attended the shooting
activity and did not see it there, please go back to the
survey and answer ONLY the enjoyment and comfort for the
shooting activity and submit the response. That will make
the numbers come out correctly.

See additional survey comments below.
. . . . .

Now is the time to summarize, while things are fresh in
everybody's minds. We have a few summary items in this
mailing and I would ask all activity coordinators (and
participants) who would like to summarize any activities
to do so.

We need to know what worked, what did not work, what issues
you had in pulling off your activity, things like that.
. . . . .

Thanks to all who provided updated numbers.

Numbers game:

Thanks to all who sent in updates. We're still missing some of
the numbers for some activities. If you have a reasonably
accurate headcount for any activity marked with ?????, please
send it in (just reply to this mailing).

If you sent in some numbers and don't see them here, please
accept my apology and remind me. :)

Thanks for the report, Kimberly. It appears that this one
came off rather well.

Also, I commend your decision to split the group up, as
opposed to insisting on one big honking table. I think it
works better that way for several reasons.

The Milano's people almost insisted in adding additional
sections to our table as more of our people arrived. I
didn't stop them, but I think it would have worked out
fine just to have the group split up among existing
tables.

Thanks for the report. I'm going to use 8 for now, which is
probably about as close as we can get.

The only other report was from someone who said she was at
the garage meeting place at the time, found nobody else
there, and left. I'm glad to hear that this one actually
did come off.

Survey items:

Thanks again to all for testing the survey. I'm going to
consider all entries so far to be "for real", so if you
took the survey, please don't re-take it following the
announcement tomorrow.

I'm very hesitant to make any changes to the survey now,
and even from year to year, as one purpose of the survey
is to track trends from year to year. We've use this same
survey in more or less the same form from 2002 on, and it
has been very meaningful in many cases to compare the
results year to year.

We added two questions this year, the first a fill-in box
regarding suggestions for other things to do, and a question
about the printed schedule and map. We also retired two
questions, so the net-net is about the same.

Gina writes:

>The shooting activity wasn't in any of the questions... not
>that it needs to be.

It most definitely needs to be, since it was an official DLV
activity and we need to track it. It was a major oversight on
my part (mea maxima culpa) and I hope it's the only one. I
just went through the list again and didn't catch any more
of them.

Anyway, those who already took the survey and did the shooting
activity can go back and answer the items for shooting only
on their second submission.

Kimberly Kael writes:

>It's a shame the questions about what you enjoyed and how

>and review my first set of answers to make sure I didn't

Let's think about this for next year. I'm very hesitant
to do sweeping changes from year to year and I don't want
any more changes this year unless they are a matter of
life or death. I do see the point, however.

>The questions about how comfortable I was at a given event
>were somewhat ambiguous. What are we looking for?

Whatever the person perceives as comfort. It averages out.

>Is it just comfort being dressed in public spaces? Should
>I answer uncomfortable if it was too hot? Or if there were
>too many people smoking?

Yes to all of the above and then some. Much of this is
intended to be in the eye of the beholder, and subject to
interpretation by the beholder. How comfortable was the
attendee at the activity?

>The question "Did you participate in any of those "other"
>activities?" is too vague to get reliable answers.

We may have to agree to disagree on this one.

The answers to this one over the years have been very
reliable and meaningful.

Those I have talked to in previous years all knew EXACTLY
what "other" activities were being referred to, and over
the years we have used this question, it hasn't always
referred to the current incarnation of the Wild H^HSide.

>I participated in other activities, just not the ones
>you're likely asking about. Do you include getting
>together for dinner and a show off the schedule, or
>partying with the wild side crowd?

The people who answer that question usually know VERY
WELL what we're referring to or else they have no clue.

AFAIC, the more with no clue, the better. :)

One thing we're really trying to track are those who blew
off some DLV activity they signed up for in order to do
those things.

>Questions about cost for attending DLV should clearly
>state "per person" across the board. The question of
>total cost should clarify whether or not it includes
>clothing, makeup, etc. or just travel/lodging/food/drinks.

Yes, we could emphasize "per person", as that's always
been the intent of the survey.

As for total cost, again, much of this is in the eye
(and pocketbook) of the beholder. How much did they think
that DLV cost them. That's what we're looking for.

Gaming ala Paris:

Alanna writes:

Thanks for the report. I'm assuming this is three in addition
to you.

Actually, I did wander in to the Paris that night, but I was
more than fashionably late and didn't really know what to
expect. I played for a while and I did circle Gustav's Bar
a few times but didn't see anybody.

Murder Mystery interactive:

Holly Writes:

>I think the activity went pretty well for a first time affair.

Actually, from what I heard it went pretty well, period! :)

>It seemed as if everyone enjoyed themselves. And although it was
>a lot of work to put together, I really enjoyed doing it.

That's what we like to hear, and we thank you for taking the
initiative. We need new and fresh activity ideas, out of the
box thinking, and those who have not done an activity to get
in there and get their hands dirty. You score for all three!

>I'm anxious to see what the response is to the survey.

My hunch is that it will be very highly rated. I have a
feeling that almost everything this year will be highly
rated.

>My sincerest and deepest thanks to Amy and Kathy at Glamour

>did... love you, too, sis!

Agree. Amy and staff at GB were very supportive on a number
of things and they have volunteered to do more to help out
next year, particularly in some areas which we lack some
resources.

Copyrights and such:

Kumiko writes:

>Would past history of usage also work in our favor?

IANAL, but probably not.

>The commemorative pins have the years stamped on it as proof
>of usage of such stated logo and image for the last five
>years?

IANAL, but the way I understand it, the things with a trademark
or service mark which would preclude us from registering are
twofold. One, we're an "informal association", the term my
attorney used for an entity having no recognized legal status
such as a corporation, LLC, NPO, etc. Second is that we have
no plans to use the trade/service mark in commerce. IIRC, the
"first use in commerce" does have some significance, but
that is something that has yet to happen.

We still hold a valid copyright, and if there would be some
compelling reason, there are criminal and civil penalties
for misuse which we could pursue. Thi$ would, of cour$e
require $ome re$ource$ for u$ to take any action. IANAL,
but those who are don't work cheap.

"If you really want to waste some money, I can have my office
write a nasty letter." is what Mike said after I showed him
the misuse of the logo on the web a few years back.
