Org List:

This is the DLV 2009 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Getting back on track:

We're now in the Call For Discussion period until the first of
September regarding the dates.

We need to table any action on the date issue until the Teeming
Millions have had their chance to provide input. We can continue
to discuss in the interim.

I would suggest that all of you keep an eye on the Discussion
Forum as that's where the majority of the comments about the dates
will appear. Also please read any ORG items promptly over the next
month or so, particularly toward the beginning of September, as
that's when any action is most likely to take place.

Following the discussion period, the floor will be open for a
motion to adjust the dates, should such a motion be raised.

In the meantime we need to move forward with other items.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Administrative Committee nominations:

The floor is now open for nominations for the two at-large
members of the Administrative Committee. To review, the motion
to establish the Administrative Committee passed just before
the date issue absorbed all of our energy.

To nominate, just reply to this mailing and say "I would like
to nominate {name} for the Administrative Committee" or words
to that effect. A duplicate nomination will be considered to
be a second. Nominees must be of voting status here. List of
eligible members below.

As a clarification, you may nominate or second someone of voting
status even if you are not of voting status yourself.

You may self-nominate or self-second if you wish, if you are of
voting status.

A few items on the potential agenda for such committee include:

1. Printed schedule? Creative finance options for same?

2. Awards of recognition.

3. {sigh} Dealing with trouble-makers.

4. Publicity and media issues.

A review of some of the relevant items of the motion:

+Two at-large members of the Administrative Committee shall be
+elected for two-year terms. One will be elected during
+odd-numbered years and one during even-numbered years.
+Elections will be held during the summer "slow season",
+between July 1 and August 31, and will be coordinated by the
+incoming Project Manager.

+Following the carrying of this motion, an election will be
+held for the two at large positions, one to expire in the next
+calendar year from the year elected, and one to expire in the
+second calendar year from the year elected. The person who
+receives the highest number of votes will assume the two-year
+term and the person who receives the second highest number of
+votes will assume the one-year term.

The only "qualification" is that those nominated need to be of
voting status here. We're posting a list of those who are
eligible below.

Note that Annie, Ginger, and Nora are ineligible for nomination,
since they hold positions of ex-officio standing on this
committee.

Here are those eligible for nomination:

Crystal (NY)
Diane (AZ)

Gina (CA)

Elvis in the news:

>Just an FYI

Thanks, Mindy.

That incident actually made the news back here. I didn't
immediately recognize the name, but now I get the connection.
Clips were used when they were talking about housing scams
just a few days ago.

The last I heard about Elvis' plans was that he was trying to
get some front money which would allow him to assume the Blyss
lease and re-open his club in that location. In any case it's
iffy as far as DLV plans are concerned, since capital is not
growing on trees this year, plus that if Blyss had a one-year
lease, it will expire in the months just before DLV, and the
assuming party will need to re-negotiate.

In any case we'll need to wait and see if anything significant
opens in that space.

In other news:

Word on the street is that the Star Trek exhibit and related
items at the Las Vegas Hilton will be closing in September.
The Big Burning Question is "To be replaced with ..." :)

Another word on the street is that the renovations to the Sahara
may begin early in 2009. The new owners are on record as wanting
to capture some of the "LA Party Crowd" from places such as the
Palms, Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, etc. Developing ...
. . .

Hooters Casino (nee San Remo) is for sale. Let's watch this
one, since without the Hooters brand or another name brand,
their rates are bound to drop. The rooms had a major makeover
for the Hooters transition.

Date vote:

Thanks, Ginger. :)

What I might ask you and everyone to do in a situation like this
is to please turn in an ABSTAIN vote if you are of voting status,
or submit a comment if you are not. This shows that you are out
there, alive, and listening, even though you don't wish to take
part in the date selection process.

Activity comments:

Costume party people, formal people, show people, please take note.

(From a conversation)

Ron Swan writes (quoted):

+Thanks for your input and suggestions.

+Since you replied directly via e-mail, we won't post your note in
+public, but I will send your suggestions and my response to the
+DLV organizers.

+> A Costume Party sounds like a neat idea to me.
+> Maybe it could have a non-mandatory "Theme" like Gone With The Wind;
+> 50"s Hollywood: Follies Brassier sp?

+I will certainly bounce that off of those who are interested in
+doing the Costume Party thing.

+>I hope there_will be lots of response to a "Dress up Dinner /
+>social" I could be in our main hotel and could help those ladies
+>be more comfortable who are more "noticeable" then some of
+>our_sisters. _River_City_Gems have a banquet room at the Red
+>LIon with it's own entrace and ajoining rest rooms we also have
+>a changing room for those who need it.

+Speaking very freely, I don't think the idea of a rented banquet
+room will get much support in ORG. The wind is blowing in the
+direction of mainstream venues, and less secluded activities.

+More likely will be a large gathering at a location that is very
+TG friendly and known to us, but not so much as to discourage
+attendance by being isolated.

+> Could we_have an evenig at _"Free Zone" or "La Cage"

+As for FreeZone, unfortunately unless we get reports that they
+have gone to a less draconian restroom policy, we probably won't
+have anything there.

+As for LaCage, we haven't been for a few years now and I will
+pass this on to those who will be coordinating shows.

+>The schedule could be put on PDF and any one wanting a "hard Copy"
+>could print their own

+Our Admin Committee will be addressing the schedule issue, or more
+specifically the lack of a printed one and the lack of money to
+print one. It may or may not happen. We'll be looking at things
+like getting vendor sponsorship and such.

Date concerns:

Whatever happens regarding the dates, I don't foresee any kind
of a win-win this year. Somebody is going to get the short end
of the stick. :( I don't see any way around this, unfortunately.

The only thing I can think of which would be equally fair to all
(equally unfair to all?) would be to skip DLV in 2009 and do our
next event in 2010, and I don't think anybody wants that!

I'm asking all to please be considerate of the needs of others,
cut everybody a bit of slack, and please be willing to "give your
50%" to make DLV 2009 serve as many as it can, as effectively as
possible! The proposed dates are not my first choice by any means,
but I do think we can make them work.
. . . . .

Susan writes:

First of all, I feel very bad that you (or anybody) has to miss
DLV! As has been said many times, there's no ideal set of dates
in 2009.

>But I know of 6 people who came last year who wont be
>coming in May. I asked them before I voted and they all said that
>May 11 thru 16 would be the worst week.

Those 6 people need to make their thoughts and feelings known,
directly, in the first person, via the appropriate channels, such
as the DLV Discussion Forum, and not as part of an obvious
orchestrated effort. They need to speak up during this Call For
Comments period for their desires to be considered.

>I think that it was unfair to make April 26 thru May 1 and
>April 27 thru May 2 separate votes, since that was only about
>a Sun to Fri or a Mon thru Sat.

I will admit that in a vote such as this, it could be said that
selections which are very similar might dilute each others' votes.

However, concerns like this need to be brought up before the vote
is taken, not after the outcome is known.

I really don't know how to respond to you, Kate. No matter how
the date selection eventually resolves this year, somebody will
be unhappy. :(

If I had a magic wand that I could wave and >>POOF<< a set of dates
would materialize that would be ideal for all, or even tolerable by
all, I would wave it, but such a spell is not within my power.

If, after the comment period has expired, you feel strongly that
the proposed dates are unacceptable to you and the DLV population
in general, please feel free to enter or second a motion to
reconsider the dates. That's about the only answer I can give to
you. Sorry. :(
