Org List:

This is the DLV 2006 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Vote results:

The tribe has spoken. This is a very clear indication of how the
group feels about this.

"Do we review and reconsider the dates for DLV 2006?"

Aye (yes, for, etc.): 30
Nay (no, opposed, etc.): 3
Abstain: 0

The last vote was received 2252 CST Thursday and polls were closed 2252
CST Saturday.

No invalid votes were received.

One duplicate vote was discarded.

One vote had what some might interpret as a provision as a comment, but
the first word clearly indicated AYE and since the outcome would not be
affected, no clarification was sought.

Raw votes with semi-obfuscated Message-ID: lines appear below.

There is no question that this motion has passed with a 2/3 majority.

The floor is now open for DLV 2006 timeframe nominations and (further)
discussion. The current DLV dates are noted as "Under review" on the web
site. A draft of a note for a special general mailing appears below.

I know that a number of timeframes have been proposed and discussed, but
to be consistent here, please submit your desired timeframe as a
"nomination" for consideration even though it may have been mentioned or
submitted before in discussion, and when doing so, please summarize
your thoughts regarding the timeframe that you are nominating.

Thanks to everybody for their input and their votes. Thanks to all for
making this process as smooth as it was.

Since this motion carried and is now closed, the floor is also open for
any additional motions. Those who raised and seconded a motion to have
me decide the new dates are now of course free to submit it again,
however, should such a motion carry I will respectfully decline to
name a set of dates, deferring to what the group decides.

For the next few weeks, timeframe items will be forwarded to the list
immediately, other items will be held and digestified for the regular
mailings.

First draft:

Note to be sent to the general DLV list within the next day or so
unless there are significant objections or concerns.
. . .

Ladies and gentlemen,

A very unfortunate scheduling issue has come to our attention regarding
the currently scheduled dates for DLV 2006.

Unknown to us at the time we decided on the dates for DLV 2006, the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention is also scheduled
for the week of April 23-29, 2006 in Las Vegas.

NAB is currently one of the largest conventions in Las Vegas and is
expected to bring somewhere between 130,000 and 140,000 conventioners
to Las Vegas during that week.

The anticipated crowd has already caused hotel rates to rise sharply for
that week. Rates for the Sahara, for example, are more than double what
they are for adjacent weeks. A sampling of rates for other popular
hotels for DLV shows similar high rates for that week.

Along with higher hotel rates, it is anticipated that the lower cost
airfares that week will be in short supply, lines will be longer at
buffets, restaurants, and attractions, rental car rates will be higher,
and crowds will be greater throughout the Strip area.

Our DLVORG group has just voted to review and reconsider the dates
for DLV 2006 and your input is requested and appreciated.

If a rescheduling is to occur, it will most likely be a few weeks at
most before or after the currently scheduled dates. We are not
considering moving DLV on the calendar to a time other than the
spring, or temporarily moving it to a location other than Las Vegas.

No final decision has been made as of this time, but the consensus
indicates that a rescheduling of DLV 2006 may be in order.

According to our standing rules, any change in DLV dates requires a 2/3
majority of the organizers, so please be assured that any changes will
be carefully considered and will not be done unless there is a clear
agreement that they are necessary.

The floor is now open for your comments. You may either reply to
this mailing or visit the DLV Discussion Forum on line at:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlvdisc/

Unless otherwise requested, all comments received regarding this topic
will be posted on the DLV Discussion Forum at the address above.

Comments will be welcome at any time until November 30. We will be
making our final vote shortly after that time, guided, of course, by
the input received from you.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Candidate timeframes:

I would like to continue the discussion of the possible new timeframes.
I'm not, at this time, placing any of them into nomination myself,
although the floor is open for anybody to do so. I would like to quickly
summarize some of those which have been mentioned and comment on them
briefly.

In general I'm not in favor of any timeframe prior to April nor after
May. I don't think there is any significant need to move DLV out of the
approximate vicinity on the calendar in which it's occured the past 9
years.

I'm also on the record against any timeframe that positively locks
out any of our active organizers or longtimers.

Let's go over the list of what's been discussed and a few variations
on those themes ...

April 2 - 8: Not gonna work, IMAO. Locks out Nora.

April 9 - 15: Just prior to Easter. If you think there was bitching
about Mothers Day, I think scheduling DLV just prior to Easter would be
like jumping feet-first into a meat grinder!

April 16 - 22: Starts on Easter. Not good, IMAO. Easter is both a sacred
and secular family holiday. See next item below.

April 17 - 23 (Monday thru Sunday): We started DLV 2003 the day just
after Easter and heard not a peep (pun intended) about it. I think that
this timeframe is a definite possibility.

April 23 - 29: Original dates. IMAO, not gonna work. Not affordable for
many and major crowds will be present.

April 30 - May 6: Not gonna work, IMAO. Locks out Ginger and may be bad
for me.

May 5 - 11 (Friday thru Thursday): Might work, but messy. Ends on a
Thursday, and I don't think that's what our people want.

May 7 - 13: Off limits. Mothers Day is the 14th. We are enjoined from
the 12th and 13th as well.

May 14 - 20: Off limits. Starts on Mothers Day.

May 15 - 21 (Monday thru Sunday): A definite possibility. Some may
gripe about beginning day after Mothers Day, but ...

May 21 - 27: Another definite possibility.

Looking over the above list, it appears to me that April 17 - 23 (Monday
thru Sunday), May 15 - 21 (Monday thru Sunday), and May 21 - 27 are the
most practical options.

Comments on any of these, gang?

Nominations? If so, please send in your timeframe nomination and a brief
note as to why you are in favor of it.
