Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Zingers and votes:

We can almost call this one the second special Zingers edition. :)

One question that we do have to have some more opinions on (like from YOU)
is that of concentrating multiple bar activities at Zingers as opposed to
spreading them out among various bars.

We *DO* need to hear from those who have been vocal about the mainstream
and upscale issue regarding this, as the momentum appears to be in the
direction of using Zingers for multiple bar activities this coming year.

Polls are still open regarding our hotel vote. Your vote is requested!

If you have not received your ballot mailing, or have misplaced it,
please write in and request a duplicate.

As of this time, polls will be open until Thursday mid afternoon or
48 hours after the last vote is received, whichever is later.

Registration testing:

Might as well give this a go and shake out the remaining bugs.

If you would like to help out testing the DLV 2005 registration process,
please visit the following URL:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg2005norm.html

Just follow the instructions.

You can register "for real" and update if necessary. The logging is
now to an extent that if there is a cricical system crash, the data
can be reconstructed, so there's no concern as in previous years
that you might have to enter your data again.

Almost all of you will be able to use the express re-registration.

Please be on the lookout for the following:

* Non-working links.

* Broken images.

* Spelling and grammatical errors.

* Any kind of error message.

* Info not found and you're SURE you gave the correct number or e-mail.

* Failure to receive the validation e-mail within a reasonable time.

* No response to a returned validation e-mail.

Of course, please report anything that doesn't work right or look right.

Thanks, gang. :)

Pin project:

The pins have been manufactured and are complete! Pin Promotions did
an excellent job and had a very quick turn-around on this.

These will be available for sale at DLV 2005 at a price of $5. This is
very close to the break-even point, given that some will be used as
promotional samples for the NSD ladies and a few others.

We will have some photos of the actual pin on line shortly.

There will be no advance sales or advance promotional samples given out,
to maximize the incentive to actually attend DLV.

Big thanks to Yvonne and JoAnn for making this happen. I would call this
project a complete success. :)

Zingers report:

I was lucky to get the chance to visit Zingers last Friday, and yes,
it's all it's reported to be and more.

I can easily see Zingers being extremely popular with our group.

It is very difficult to say anything negative about Zingers. There just
isn't much negative about it at all.

The atmosphere of the place is classy, but laid back.

They have given the place a total makeover. Quite a bit of new
furniture, new sound and light system (I think I saw a couple Golden
Scans up there), small dance floor where the grand piano used to be,
and a quiet room off to the side. They even got rid of that hideous
pinkish-orange light in the ladies room! :)

I'll have some photos on line shortly.

New video poker machines will be installed at the bar in January.

Management and staff are super, as was expected. :)

The clientele was an eclectic mix of all types. Zingers does attract a
much, uh, let's just say cleaner crowd than does that other place that I
even hate to mention in the same sentence as Zingers. :)

Drinks are good and prices are reasonable.

Parking lot out back is well lighted. Yes, I think it's a very good
choice for a staging area location.

As for the entertainment, Lou Martinez on Friday was well received and
I think that's a group that most everybody will like. I forgot to ask
if they were booked as far in advance as DLV, but if they are not, a
similar group would be well received as well.

A quick consensus of the people I asked was in favor of using Zingers
for the Welcome Celebration (effectively replacing Spotlight or Flex),
the yet-unnamed maximum-turnout thing on Wednesday, and for replacing
Goodtimes with Zingers for the Annual Mixer on Friday. In light of this,
I'm noting this on the working schedule. (Yes, everything is still in
pencil as of this time.)

I am now in agreement that we should use Zingers for most of our
single-track bar activities where we want a maximum turnout.

As for food service. The kitchen that Keys had in there is no more. They
will, however, bring in catered food for special events, giving us that
option if we want it.

What more can I say? It's a great place and once again I congratulate
the management and staff on a good job well done!

Densie said she will be submitting a Zingers review as well. (I shiver
with antici ... {say it!})

Oh, and if it seems that I was ignoring anybody there, it was just that
I found myself being spread very thin that evening. I found myself kind
of circulating and working myself gradually to the rear in the club.
There were a number of people there I knew. It is a very conducive
atmosphere for socializing.

Zodies report:

We also stopped by Zodies, to get something to eat and to have a few
drinks.

In response to the concern about size, yes, the place is small, even
when you take both the bar and restaurant sides into consideration. I
estimate that the bar side would handle 25 then start to feel crowded,
and the restaurant side maybe 35 or so.

The food was good, almost all what I would call "bar food" such as
chicken wings and such. Drinks ran on the strong side. :) Service was
quick and friendly.

The clientele at the time was almost all single males playing VP at the
bar, although other food customers (mixed groups) came in while we were
eating.

I don't think this place is a candidate for one of our major bar
outings, but it might be good for a meal where 50 or so would be
the limit.

It is quiet and yes, secluded. It was not crowded early Friday evening.
It is also somewhat off the beaten path. Not way off, but inconvenient
for those without a vehicle, and in an area of town that will not be
familiar to those from out of town.

I would hate to party like in 1998. I would have to become re-acquainted

Ya know, I really hate to nitpick anybody's web site. I hate that almost
as much as when somebody nitpicks mine. :)

Having seen Zingers first hand this last weekend, it's very difficult
to say anything negative about it, it being the club, that is. :)

It's obvious that they have devoted their time, money, and talents to
getting the club up and running, as opposed to doing a web site.

And, that's the way it should be.

Now, as for the web site ... and I don't really wanna digress into a
"World According To Ms. R" type of critique, but ... and if Monica and
Rikki are listening in, please take this as constructive criticism, and
not putdowns. I know I did say some of this in person last Friday.

Yes, Densie, content is lacking. However, I've seen much worse.

Bar and club web pages tend to be very poor, and this one does at least
give the "what when where" about the place.

Empty content is, IMAO, better than stale content. Their use of flash is
tasteful and not overstated. Likewise they don't appear to (mis)use any
buggy java/script.

I don't see any mortal sins, about the worst sin I see is the use of
"construction" pages which is just not considered to be good practice
for a commercial web site. Consensus on the best practice is that if the
content does not exist, a live link should not exist. If it's necessary
to have the place-holder in there, the live link should be "greyed out"
until it points to something.

Titles are overloaded (should go in Meta tags) and text in the images
will not get spidered. Those are the items that stand out.

I understand that this web site was done by a volunteer, and my
suggestion was to just give it a little TLC and fill in the missing
links. Now, if they paid real money to an art house to do that, they
need to have a serious "come to Jesus" meeting with them!

I do think the web cams will be a nice feature when they are up and
running.

The Del Mar in the news:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe off topic but it's part of DLV lore. :)

Thanks, Dorothy.

{meow!} Somebody sure stepped on somebody's toes somewhere for sure! :)

Let's take a trip to the real world. Anybody who lives in Las Vegas or
visits frequently knows that the Del Mar is a fornicatorium.

I knew it long before one of our people was invited there for a pongo
session back in 1999. The Powers That Be knew it too, for a long time.

Hey, cops are not dumb, they know what goes on in the areas they patrol.

My guess is that somebody either did something or failed to do something
and royally p*ssed off somebody else quite recently.

I can think of one other local business where the same profession is
practiced quite regularly and quite openly. They have not made the same
mistakes -- yet!

Oh well, enough on this topic. :)
