Welcome to the DLVORG list:

I would like to welcome those who are new to the list, and thank
everybody for stepping forward to help out. Don't be afraid to speak up,
make suggestions, or even disagree with what appears to be a popular
point of view. It's very "ok" to agree to disagree, as long as we
respect each other and each other's point of view.

I would normally say that I expect this list to come out weekly, but
we're right now in a summary phase of DLV 2002, and the traffic has been
heavy lately. It should ease up within the next few weeks.

I would like to ask everybody, especially the new people, to think about
what YOU, personally, would like to do for DLV, both generally and
specifically.

My personal philosophy is to get the planning, organizing, and
implementation done prior to show time, so that all of us can relax
and enjoy Las Vegas and each other's company. Hey, it's our vacation
too!

DLV has become a sequence of activities, which are for the most part
independent of each other, but combine into a very cohesive event. Some
of them are very traditional and ordinary, others are quite different.

It's our job to, both individually and collectively, plan those
activities, schedule them, and promote them.

We do this primarily via this mailing list. Please do not hesitate to
write in with ideas, suggestions, commentary, etc.

We've got almost a year to plan DLV 2003, but as we found out last year,
it worked quite well to get the preliminary plans made by the end of the
summer, the schedule of activities sketched in by the holidays, and
concentrate on promotion and fine tuning between the holidays and DLV.

If we're gonna be making any major changes ... those with a meat cleaver
as opposed to those with a scalpel ... we should do those as soon as
possible.

I see the following on our "do it list" for the next few months. If
anybody sees anything I'm missing, please speak up.

1. Any final summarizing of DLV 2002. Analysis and discussion of the
participation survey and verbal comments. This is currently in progress
and is winding down as of this time.

2. Discussion of the length of DLV. Did we have the length about right,
do we need it longer, was it too long? This is a current topic of
discussion on this list. Feel free to join in, please.

3. Days of the week and timing. Did the Tuesday-Sunday timeframe seem to
work, or should it be tweaked. This is being discussed with item 2.

4. General timeframe of DLV. (IMAO, again, the venue, Las Vegas, and
the approximate time, spring, should be considered in stone.) Several
options have been proposed and are being discussed currently.

5. General activity comments, suggestions, etc. We want to paint in
broad strokes at this time. We want to discuss what worked, what did
not work, which activities should be repeated, which activities should
be ash-canned, what new and exciting activities we can plan, yes, gang,
that overused cliche' "think outside the box" applies here. DLV itself
was very much outside the box when it first happened 6 years ago.

We have a lot of very good feedback about our activities. We don't want
to simply rewind and replay DLV 2002, but those activities which were
strong can certainly be repeated, perhaps with some tweaking to keep
them fresh.

Don't be afraid to suggest activities that are totally different and off
the wall. Don't concentrate on stereotypical GLBT-oriented activities
either. In the past years we've had (serious) suggestions of such things
as skydiving and rock climbing.

If you have a particular activity in mind, write up a few sentences or a
few paragraphs about it and post it here. We can talk about the activity
and the practicalities of making it happen, if necessary. In most cases,
it will be up to you to "adopt" this activity and make it happen. Don't
be afraid to ask for help if it's something you don't think you can
handle by yourself.

6. Publicity and promotion. Do the existing methods (web site, T*
event listings, support group newsletters, etc.) work, should we be
expanding promotion, maybe?

Ideas for new and different (yes, "out of the box") methods of
promotion.

7. Yes, we will, like it or not, have one more iteration of our yearly
endless-loop topics such as ...

  a. Meeting room. ({sigh})

  b. Suggested/recommended/official hotel(s). (ZZZZzzzzz....)

  c. GLBT bars vs. "straight" bars.
...

8. This is an issue that has come up this year, and really reflects the
fact that we're growing more diverse and possibly attracting people who
are not in tune with what DLV is supposed to be.

We need to discuss and agree upon conditions of participation and
expectations of our participants. I might be tempted to use the term
"Code of Conduct" but I dislike that term, and more so the hyperanal
language contained within such codes.

We need to let our people know, nicely but in no uncertain terms, what
is expected of them, and what behavior will not be tolerated. Enough
said on that. It's our job to discuss it and decide on a plan.
. . . . .

I see the following timetable for our first-stage planning, setting
the length and days of DLV. I think it's very important to get that
done ASAP, so people can make preliminary plans and we can get on
the event listings, etc.

Now thru end of July: Discussion of the days/dates, length, timing,
etc.

August 1: Call for comments from general DLV list. Announce our
tentative dates, allow one month for comments and discussion.

September 1: Summarize comments, announce dates.

December 1: Have a rough schedule of activities ready to present to the
general DLV audience.

Comments? Discussion? Ideas? :)
