Schedule comments:

>1). DLV Format:

>DLV did wind down sharply after the big events of the weekend in both
>1999 and 2000. This seems a natural thing, since Monday and Tuesday are
>usually the slowest party nights in any major city. Even Sundays has
>always seen a major fall-off in the years I attended. Perfectly
>understandable, when you consider that a lot of people have to get back
>to work by Monday morning.

>So, if we want a DLV that runs longer than 4 days, I would recommend
>starting earlier. Have an official start on Wednesday, and move up the
>pre-DLV party to Tuesday. Then, have a "normal" DLV night on Thursday
>(dinner, show, club, bar, whatever), followed by the usual DLV nights of
>Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

If that schedule is to be during-after N+I, there will be a major
conflict. Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday are the main N+I days. If it's
to be before N+I, it would most likely work.

>Certainly, these early nights would start small, but we could then build
>towards the weekend as a grand finale.

>2). Relationship to N+I Conference:

>I have never had any connection with the computer conference(s) that
>precede DLV, but it is great that some folks are able to combine the
>activities and save some money. If we go with the earlier start date of
>Tuesday outlined in #1 above, then this will increase the overlap with
>the computer conference.

Increasing the overlap would be a Bad Thing<tm> for two reasons. Days
would be out for anybody going to both N+I and DLV. There are even some
evening activities in N+I, such as headhunter receptions and the like.

We also run into some room rate "adjustment" for the N+I period. Some
hotels gouge for those days (like those close to the Convention Center)
but some do not.

>I have always gotten to town for DLV on
>Wednesday night, and have not had a problem in 1999 or 2000 in getting a
>cheap rate for that night; so, I don't think that an earlier start date
>would create a financial hardship (i.e., if you are in town for 6
>nights, it costs you for 6 nights regardless of which side of the
>weekend you choose).

>I will be interested to hear from computer conference attendees if they
>can get away from the conference to dress up and go out and party on
>Tuesday and Wednesday. I always go out and party when I am at a
>conference, but then I am just a bad girl at heart. :-)

As I said, there are some evening activities. However, it can be quite
tiring walking the exhibit floors for several hours. Also, those who go
to the seminars/keynotes/workshops/etc. have to get up somewhat early.

As an aside, I may or may not be attending N+I this coming year, and I
won't know until early 2001. We get to send one person. In 1999, I was
asked to attend, in 2000 I volunteered and nobody else was jumping up
and down waving their hand. If nobody else is that excited about going,
then I can most likely go to N+I again, but if somebody else does, it
will be his/her turn.

>3). Mother's Day:

>Do we have a reading on cancellations in the past because of Mother's
>Day conflicts?

I'm unaware of anybody who actually cancelled because of Mothers Day.

There were no comments at all about this for 1997 and 1998. In late
1999 the question was raised. A call for comments was given, and the
responses were strongly in favor of not changing it, for that year.

>I ran into major static from my wife after I got back from DLV 2000
>because I was out of town for Mother's Day (we have 2 children).
>Keeping spouses happy is always important in any marriage, particulary
>when one of you is a CD. So, I would prefer to avoid Mother's Day 2001
>(May 13, I think, still trying to confirm).

Mothers Day is traditionally the second Sunday in May, making it
May 13th. in 2001.

>If having DLV on Mother's
>Day isn't a problem for most people, then I will probably handle the
>conflict by leaving on the first flight out Sunday.

I went back and got the file of collective Mothers Day comments from
last December. They follow this article. (I always laugh when I read
the "do the casinos close early for Mothers Day?" remark. :)

>Given the continuing Mother's Day conflict, I am really starting to like
>the idea of starting DLV early.

I don't see a schedule that starts in the middle of the N+I week working
at all.

However, I see something like starting the Thursday before N+I and
winding up Monday as being a valid option. This would avoid the
Mothers Day weekend altogether, making the DLV dates the 3rd. thru
the 7th. or so.

Mothers Day comments:

From the DLV 2000 org list ...

+Schedule comments:
+
+(in order received, little or no editing)
+
+>> I'm aware of one couple who's chosen classes such that the final
+>> exams will not conflict with DLV. Moving DLV one week earlier will
+>> effectively lock them out of attending, due to finals.
+
+>Okay, here's the scoop on that.
+
+>A week earlier might actually be BETTER for {us}. Still tough, as I'd
+>be skipping my last ever official college class. (Well, before I go for
+>my Masters or something later.) But easier than the finals, or at
+>least less hectic.
+......
+
+>With the currect dates I cannot make it. I am trying to rearrange my
+>plans for those days, but nothing so far. If it is changed to the
+>weekend before I could be there for Thursday and Friday. If it is
+>moved back a week, I am out as well. I am really trying to change my
+>appointment. If this change takes place it won't matter what weekend
+>DLV is I will be able to make it.
+......
+
+>Annie you can't keep trying to be all things to all people . You pick
+>this date with a reason and a purpose don't let any come lately change
+>the program after your loyal followers have agreed for 4 months. : )
+
+>You can not pick a perfect date as you can not get every first timer
+>to come out. As a manager type person < it says so on my businees
+>cards> : ) stick with your plan! We can work on the rest of the
+>details in the coming months.
+......
+
+>Personally, it doesn't matter to me, I'll make it if I make it.
+>However, you all have to realize that Mothers Day is not an official
+>National Holiday. It's a very commercial, made-up quasi-holiday from
+>Greeting Card industry. You don't need to change it at all!
+......
+
+>>>I just had this horrible revelation that the proposed dates are over
+>>>Mother's day Weekend.
+
+>So, call your mom then. Tell her you love her and that your having a
+>wonderful time and you wish she were here. She'll understand.
+......
+
+>Annie, there's an old saying: "Try to please all and you will please
+>none." The important thing here is to make a decision and stick to
+>it. Sure, a few will use this as an excuse to skip it and sulk in
+>the closet, but they're the ones who won't show up anyway. Stick
+>to your guns, girl, you're doing a bang-up job!
+......
+
+>Here's the important thing. Do any of the casinos or shows close early
+>or take the day off due to Mother's Day? I doubt the bars will close.
+......
+
+>Change in scheduled dates!
+
+>Nope! Not this year.
+
+>1. I believe that DLV has always been based on the current weekend
+>after N+I. While I don't disagree with changing date I think that this
+>should be for 2001 and beyond rather than in 2000
+
+>2. As I come from NZ (That is in the South Pacific, near Australia and
+>is a 12 plus hour flight to LA) going DLV, or any other TG event, has
+>to coincide with some business activity. N+I is ideal from my
+>perspective.
+
+>3. Moving to the weekend before. For N+I attendees this may cause a
+>problem as some seminars and training run over the weekend prior to the
+>main show. I know in 1999 that Annie for example was at the seminars on
+>the Mon and Tue.
+
+>Moving to this weekend probably wouldn't bother me that much.
+
+>4. Moving to a weekend later. I wouldn't be able to attend unless there
+>was some imperative business reason to stay in the US.
+
+>5. Weather. As a long time to CDer I know the hotter is gets the harder
+>it is to keep the make-up looking OK. The later in May the hotter it
+>gets.
+
+>6. What about other TG events in the same period. Cal Dreamin is on in
+>the last weekend of April (26-30?). Moving to the first weekend in May
+>might be encourage attendees from there tyo move LV for DLV or might
+>restrict some attendees. Are there any other TG events that a date move
+>would cause a conflict with.
+
+>In summary I believe the dates for 2000 should stand and the actual
+>dates reviewed for future years. I really like knowing that I can plan
+>on going to a business event and have TG event associated it with it.
+>While I have already booked flights and made some plans for N+I and DLV
+>2000 I can change them but others may not be so lucky. Especially if
+>they need to book vacation time or have purchased cheap advance
+>purchase tickets etc.
+......
+
+>It's like this for me. My mother and I haven't spoken for a couple
+>years now, and she and the others have all but disowned me. They
+>are all so closed-minded about this all. I would much rather spend
+>mothers day in Vegas with you, where I can enjoy it, than to be at
+>home listening to the mothers day hype on tv.
+.....
+
+>My vote is this:
+
+>1st. choice: 2nd. weekend in May, like we planned.
+>2nd. choice: 1st. weekend in May, one week earlier.
+
+>If it's the 3rd. weekend in May, I can't make it. Our anniversary.
+......
+
+>Everything sounds great to us. Looking forward to the migration of TVs
+>and CDs to the town. LV has been getting very staid of late.

Thanks for volunteering. I have you down. :)

>I will explain to the
>managers I contact exactly what DLV is, and that we are better behaved
>than a bunch of college girls on the town in Vegas.

Uh, better behaved? We are? <vbfg>

>I will get the
>best rate possible and look into the cost of having our own meeting
>room available to us 24 hours a day.

IMAO, the meeting room is not a make-or-break thing. As I look back on
this year's DLV, I don't think something like that would have seen much
use at all.

Setting the dates:

>Since I wrote the long DLV2001 proposals for dates etc I've had another
>thought (yes, I know 2 in the same month is unusual but it happens
>sometimes).

We'll excuse you ... this time. :)

>We should make a final decision on the date as soon as practical
>allowing for discussion and feedback etc.

Yes, I agree 100% with you on this. Sooner the better.

>The sooner a date is decided
>and a draft schedule of activities the sooner we can provide a
>meaningful distribution on the vent to the various TG publications, web
>sites, newsgroups and mail lists etc, etc.

This coming year, I would like to see a concerted effort toward getting
the word out, early, especially to those who keep the t* event
calendars. For four years running I've fielded e-mail from those who
wanted to attend, and could have if they had heard about it just a few
weeks earlier.
