Only 60 days left, gang!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
My status:

The reason this list has skipped a couple weeks is that I have been
physically unable to produce it and get it out.

As many of you have heard, I've been in the hospital for several days.
I sent an update to this list and some other addresses. If anybody did
not get one, let me know and I'll send it.

Good news is that I'm out and recovering well.

I'll still be there at DLV, but I may still not have the energy I
usually have by that time.

I'm also under a number of restrictions now, such as driving, lifting,
alcohol, etc., and some of these may carry over into the DLV period.

Major problem will that I may not be able to be a van driver for the
group this year (but it looks like we have some others) and I may not be
able to pick up people from the airport as I've done in the past. We can
discuss vans and airport pickup more as the date approaches.

Anyway, everything else is go as planned. Again, thanks to everybody for
the cards, flowers, kind thoughts, etc. :)

Two months out:

We're coming up against the two month mark, gang, and it's time for
everybody to firm up details, both on a personal and a group level.

One very important note, which I'm making after having a talk with one
of the travel agents in our building, is that there ain't gonna be a
fare war this spring!

My advice to all is that if you have not made your air reservations yet,
DO SO NOW, WITHOUT ANY FURTHER HESITATION. Prices are creeping upward,
and word in the industry is that prices will continue to rise over the
next few months.

As we've all heard, fuel prices are rising.

What's not being reported is that the demand for tickets is not falling
off, therefore, ticket prices will rise.

As some examples ...

United claims to have not raised fares, but has done away with many
promotional prices over the past week or so. Delta has announced blanket
fare hikes, followed by Continental.

For a while, the specials from Southwest were not as "special" as they
had been, but this week they are hyping their $99 each way special
again.

A quick check still shows available flights and tickets in the $200-300
range round trip to LAS from most areas ... for now.

Bottom line: Air prices now are as low as they will be between now and
DLV. Book now.

Enough on that subject. :)

Room availability over the DLV period seems to be good, and prices seem
to be good. All three of our suggested places (Stardust, Imperial
Palace, Palace Station) have rooms available for the entire DLV period.
We're not seeing as much adjustment (gouging) of the rates over the
Networld+Interop days (just prior to DLV) as we saw last year.

Currently we have a number of people who will be staying at the Imperial
Palace, with others at Stardust, Westward Ho, La Quinta, Ramada Suites,
Olympian Palms (wherever that is), Sahara, and a couple places I know I
am forgetting.

Rental car rates appear to have come down a bit. Most of the majors are
showing AAA/etc. rates in the $19-ish range daily and $100-ish weekly.

Restaurants:

>I will be going to Vegas in 2 weeks with a group of girls. Can you give
>me the names of some TG friendly restaurants?

The ones that actively solicit GLBT business include Keys, 1000 East
Sahara, Las Vegas Lounge, on Karen Ave between Paradise and Maryland,
Freezone, between Swenson and Paradise just north of Tropicana, and a
few others in the "triangle" area near the Freezone.

We've also had groups get good service at Tony Roma's on Sahara, just
east of Paradise, and several casino buffets and coffee shops, including
Sahara, Imperial Palace, Riviera, and a few others. Service at Hard Rock
was not the best, but I believe anybody who showed up at the time we did
got equally sucky service.

I should point out that I have yet to hear of anybody refused service at
any LV area restaurant. Last December, Karen and I went to a rather nice
steak house (can't remember the name) just off Sahara at Jones or
Rainbow. We received great service, but again, I don't think the two of
us exactly screamed "tranny". :)

>I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again in May.

Me too :)

Meeting room:

Last summer and fall, the hottest topic on the organizational list was
that of a communal meeting room for DLV2k. A few weeks ago I announced
that the person who originally was to look into this will most likely
not be doing so.

Since then, nobody has stepped forward to volunteer to coordinate this,
and nobody's even written in with an "oh shucks" to the fact that it may
not happen.

As we learned last year, the hottest topic in January can easily get
stone cold by May.

Lately we've had quite a bit of interest and discussion on other things
concerning the trip, but nothing at all about a meeting room.

I'm making a motion that if we don't hear any further discussion about
this over the next two weeks, we consider the topic closed for DLV2k.

If anyone missed the discussion of this last year, and is interested in
this, the archives of the organizational list are at:

Going twice ...

What to bring:

>Hi, I want so very much to attend, but I've got some questions, and
>quite honestly, some worries.

>You see, I've been dressing for many years, but always alone. I've got
>a whole bunch of things, but I don't know if anything would be
>acceptable in public.

>My goal for this coming trip is to learn to dress in public, but quite
>honestly, I'm totally clueless as to what to bring, or what I need
>to buy so I won't make an ass out of myself, or embarrass the rest
>of you. I want to spend as much time en-femme as I can, you see, but
>I need some guidance as to what I should plan to wear.

We'll send out suggestions on what to wear for most of the planned
activities as the date approaches. Here are some general thoughts.

Two suggestions I would make well in advance, so you can plan what to
bring:

1. Don't overdress, especially during the daytime. Casual is the
uniform-of-the-day for almost everybody in Las Vegas during the day.
Evenings can be casual to dressy to glitzy, depending on time, place,
and circumstance.

2. Please be realistic. When in public with the group (or even alone)
dress in a manner that's appropriate to your age and body type. Some
CD'ers seem to love what is sometimes referred to as "clubwear" meaning
tight spandex, PVC, etc. Yes, you will see some of this in Las Vegas in
the evenings. It takes a certain degree of attitude and fitness to pull
this stuff off, even for a GG. If you're over 30 or over 130, please
don't even think of wearing this stuff to places like casinos,
showrooms, restaurants, etc. It may be appropriate for GLBT clubs or
Rocky Horror, but that's it.

>Are we going to be en-femme all the time, or most of the time?

That's entirely up to you. Some people remain in girlmode most of the
time, others might be in boymode during the days, and girlmode for some
of the evening activities. What you do will depend on your wishes, your
style, and your comfort level.

>Can you or any of the others who are more
>experienced give me some suggestions on what to bring, and if I need
>to buy anyting in advance?

If you want to go casual-femme during the days, you can wear anything
from jeans and t-shirts to casual coordinates, such as tops, slacks,
and even skirts of an appropriate length and cut. My suggestion would
be to take a look at what gg's of your approximate age and size are
wearing and use that as a starting point.

COMFORTABLE SHOES! You will be spending quite a bit of time on your
feet during the days.

If you want to dress up for some of the evening activities, plan on
bringing one or two nice dresses and the appropriate accessories.
Appropriate dress for most Las Vegas shows and lounges ranges all the
way from nice casual to classy evening wear.

If you want to really put on the dog, or wear something really exotic
in public, yes, there will be some activities where you can. Dress for
Rocky Horror Picture Show is anything goes, really, anything. Outfits
that are more revealing/daring/etc. will be appropriate at some of the
bars and clubs.

>Also, will there be anyone there who
>can give me an honest assessment and critique, so I'm not going to make
>a big jerk out of myself?

Yes, advice is plentiful. I would ask, however, that if you ask for an
honest opinion, and the answer is not what you wanted to hear, please
don't get p*ssed and lash out at the person you asked. If you disagree,
seek other opinions, several of them, if necessary.

Another thing you might do is look at the pictures from the past few
DLV's and see what was being worn to the various functions.

This url shows part of our group waiting to be seated at the showroom at
the Plaza Hotel:

casual settings:

These shots show typical after-hours get-togethers, in which you will
see everything from jeans to coordinates, to dresses:

Mailbag:

>I found a store that sells large sizes and has no problem with cd`s or
>t.s.`s they are very friendly and helpful .. Im sorry i can`t remember
>the name of the store it`s on sahara rd < approx 3400 > I ve bough a
>nice dress there for out xmas party ... I hope the inform may have
>helped some ,,sorry I can t remember the name of the store.

Hmmmm, is this on East or West Sahara?

>I remember that. I was on Vegas blvd and Sahara and I turned left
>going down past Palace Station about , one or two stop lights maybe..
>Its a small store , its in a strip mall on the right side of the
>street as you go from Sahara on down that way ,, its at a light you
>would look to your right and I want to sat the name is lusciuos
>lingerire << ?? >>

That would make it West Sahara.

I'm aware of one shop on West Sahara, about 4000-ish, that being Bare
Essentials, but that would be in the middle of the block and on the
left (south) side of the street while heading away from the Strip.

>There was only 2 women working in there they were mature women not
>girls.

This is definitely not Bare Essentials then, that shop is run by a
guy. They invite t* business.

>I chatted with them and they said basiclly around halloween
>guys came in to buy things for halloween < right ,,>and started coming
>back after halloween to buy some more clothes ,, a couple said they
>found they enjoyed dressing up and wanted tyo do it agin.. that was
>wehen they ladies at the store proably realized that there was a
>sizable market to sell to cd`s ,, and they don t have a problem with
>men crossdressing so why not ..

... and if you don't think we're all over the place, just look in any
so-called straight bar around h'ween. :) :) :)

>The only thing they will say is to be discreet they do have a lot of
>str8 customers so please respect their wishes I would imagine they
>would love the business as long as we're discreet ..

Yes, most shops love our business. They make money from us!

>Im looking forward to going there in May to be honest a little nervous
>since I ve never spent more then a couple of hours out in public ,,so
>have patience with me please.. Usually when I ve gone out I ve been at
>doings that are mostly other cd`s or t.s.`s so I tend to be bashful ..

It's ok to be bashful or nervous, but you will find the feeling goes
away quite rapidly. This is reported time and time again. :)

Does anybody recognize this shop, and know the exact name?
