North Las Vegas, a second opinion ...

This was received in response to my comments about North Las Vegas (which were reviewed by two local people before they were posted) from a resident of the area who does not believe the description to be accurate.

There are some very good comments regarding the various casinos toward the end.

Here's the second opinion on North Las Vegas, with very little editing ...

I live in N. Las Vegas and do not find your warnings and comments on "my
part of town" correct or accurate. I am making interlinear comments and
will add others at the end.

>About North Las Vegas

>A number of reader comments and questions have to do with North Las
>Vegas. While many areas of North Las Vegas are quite safe, and lots of
>very good people live and work there, North Las Vegas (a separate
>jurisdiction) does have the reputation of being somewhat gritty and
>unsalubrious.

YES, IF YOU GO TO THE AREA NEAR MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD AND LAKE MEAD
BLVD OR TO THE ALPHABET STREETS YOU MAY HAVE TROUBLE. BUT GOING TO
CRAIG ROAD (exit on Craig Rd from I 15 for the Cannery Casino) OR
DECATUR OR RANCHO (exit on Rancho (N) on I 95 for Fiesta or Texas
Stations, Decatur (S) for Arizona Charlies, or Ann Road (W) for Santa
Fe Station) YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE NIEGHBORHOODS.

>Although North Las Vegas is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse,
>the proximity to a large military facility and a plethora of such
>businesses as adult bookstores, pawnbrokers, buy-here-pay-here lots,
>cheap liquor stores, etc., add to an atmosphere that is not accepting
>of those who deviate from the stereotypical

I WAS NEVER BOTHERED BY ANY ONE FROM NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE. AND THERE
IS ONE XXX BOOKSTORE NEAR NELLIS AND CRAIG OPPOSITE THE BASE AND
ANOTHER SOMEWHERE IN THE INDUSTRIAL AREA. NORTH LAS VEGAS IS MOSTLY A
MIDDLE CLASS GROWING ENCLAVE. THERE ARE TWO PAWN SHOPS AND NO CHEAP
LIQUOR STORES. THERE ARE, HOWEVER, MANY BANKS, WALGREENS, HOME DEPOT,
PETSMART, THE 99 CENT STORE, TONS OF FAST FOOD (Mc D, Burger Kings, Taco
Bells, IHOP, Crispy Kreme, Carls, Subway, Panda Express) AND OTHER
STORES THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN A MIDDLE CLASS AREA. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO
SEND YOU PHOTOS?

>The larger casinos in North Las Vegas, such as Jerry's Nugget,
>Speedway, and the new Cannery, should be perfectly safe for those who
>blend well and are comfortable with most mainstream situations.
>However, such things as the adult businesses (the "adult industry" is
>outside the scope of this document) and neighborhood bars should be
>avoided.

WHY WOULD A TOURIST GO TO A 'NEIGHBORHOOD BAR'?

>As I would suggest for any unfamiliar area, I suggest you avoid North
>Las Vegas unless you are familiar with the particular area you intend
>to visit and have reason to believe you will be safe.

THE SAME COULD BE SAID FOR FREMONT STREET EAST OF LV BLVD.

>One particularly questionable area is on the boundary between Las Vegas
>and North Las Vegas and is roughly bounded by Owens Ave., Foremaster
>Lane, Las Vegas Boulevard, and Main Street, north of Cashman Center.
>This has been the scene of homeless encampments, people residing in
>storm drains and ditches, and does appear to have a concentration of
>hookers, drug dealers, and the like. This area is traversed when
>passing between downtown Las Vegas and North Las Vegas on the local
>streets. I suggest you avoid this vicinity, day or night.

MOST PEOPLE TAKE THE FREEWAYS: I 95 N/B (WEST SIDE) AND I 15 N/B (EAST
SIDE)) TO GET TO N. LAS VEGAS, THUS AVOIDING THE AFFOREMENTIONED SCUZZY
AREAS. EVEN IF YOU TAKE THE CAT BUS, TO N. LV, YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET
OFF THE BUS IN THOSE AREAS YOU CITED.

CASINO COMMENTS:

THE CANNERY (E. CRAIG AND LOSEE) IS A VERY NICE AND QUIET CASINO WITH LOOSE
SLOTS. THE BUFFET AND RESTAURANTS ARE REASONABLY PRICED HAVE GOOD FOOD.
THERE IS A "UNISEX" LAVATORY TO THE RIGHT OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE NEAR THE
AMERICAN CAN CLUB COUNTER. THERE ARE OFTEN FREE SHOWS IN "THE CLUB." I
WOULD RATE THE CANNERY AS A VERY FRIENDLY AND FUN PLACE.

WILDFIRE, SANTA FE AND TEXAS STATIONS: WENT TO EACH TWICE - NO PROBLEMS.

ARIZONA CHARLIES: DECATUR AND HAYES (SOUTH OF I 95 AND DECATUR) - OK WITH
GOOD SLOTS. (THIS IS NOT REALLY IN N. LV BUT CLOSE TO THE BOARDER).

THESE ARE MOSTLY "LOCALS" CASINOS AND AS SUCH HAVE A MUCH BETTER PAYOUT ON
SLOTS AND TABLE GAMES AS OPPOSED TO THE STRIP OR DOWNTOWN.
