Albert D. Cashier

Albert D. Cashier (1843–1915, born Jennie Irene Hodgers), was an Irish-born American who served as an enlisted soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. Cashier was born female but lived most of life as a man.

During the Civil War, Cashier's secret was discovered, and he was discharged and sent home, but he returned to battle and continued to fight until victory was declared and he was honorably discharged.

After the war, Cashier lived a modest life as a man working several menial jobs. A number of individuals became aware of Cashier's physiological state but remained silent during his life.

The life of Albert Cashier is documented in Also Known as Albert D. J. Cashier (Compass Rose, 2005, ASIN: B00501G9XQ).
