Only 119 days left, gang!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Welcome back:

Happy New Year!

Hope everybody enjoyed the holidays. :)

For the next few months, we will be sending out this mailing list
"weekly as needed", meaning that we'll plan for a mailing each Sunday,
but skip a week if there's a very low volume of traffic. We won't have
any mid-week mailings unless there's something *really* important that's
time-critical.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
This mailing:

This mailing contains only "administrivial" items, in order to keep it
to a reasonable size. Many mailbag items have come in over the past
month or so, nothing of which is time-critical, and we'll begin with
those starting this coming Sunday.

Please read this issue over very carefully, as it contains many very
important items pertaining to your enjoyment of DLV 2001.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Registration is open:

Quite a few registrations have already come in. As of this time, we have
more people signed up than we had total at DLV 1997 or DLV 1998. If this
trend continues, we will have yet another record turnout at DLV 2001!

When you make the decision to attend, please stop by the url:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/register.html

This will help us better plan for DLV.

The information we collect will be for DLV planning only, we will not
give any of it out, etc.

Yes, this will also help us answer the perennial question "how many
people are coming" earlier and more accurately.

Also, don't wait if you're not exactly sure of where you are staying
and the like. There will be an update screen coming within the next
week or so.

NOTE TO RETURNEES, VOLUNTEERS, AND LAS VEGAS LOCALS: Please register,
nobody is assumed to be on the list. Also if you helped out by debugging
the forms by entering data prior to the end of November, those
registrations were discarded when testing was final. Thanks for your
cooperation on this. :)

Call For Volunteers:

"Awsk Nawt, what DLV can do for you ..." :)

DLV runs entirely on volunteer help. Fortunately this year, we've
already had a number of volunteers come forward, but we're still in
need in some areas.

If you would like to volunteer, just e-mail dlv@geekbabe.com (just reply
to this mailing).

We've had a few volunteers already, but we are still needing people to
volunteer to help out in the following areas:

1. EVENT COORDINATORS: Most of the major activities and events are
already covered, but we still need a few people to "adopt" certain
planned (and additional) activities and do the necessary legwork to make
them happen. Things like shows, group dinners, side trips, etc.

In particular, the following items need to be "adopted".

. Golf. We still need somebody to take this on, the sooner the better,
if it is to happen. Golfers?

. Saturday evening show (Kenny Kerr, tentatively) We need a volunteer
to obtain times, take a headcount, coordinate reservations, etc.

No, you don't have to live in the area, or even know the area well, you
just have to be willing to do such things as find out information, take
a headcount, etc.

2. DRIVERS: Some of our people will have their own cars, but quite a
few will not, and will prefer not to use public transportation for
obvious reasons.

I'll most likely have a van for the duration, but we will need other
people to help get everybody from point A to point B, especially on the
weekend. We already have a few volunteers and semi-volunteers for
this, but we need to firm things up here.

In particular, if you will have a large vehicle such as a van (or PT
Cruiser :) and are willing to help give rides, please let us know.

3. BIG SISTERS: We need a few people to volunteer to help out (possibly
at very short notice) those who for one reason or another are having
some kind of difficulty. It could be a case of first-time jitters, or
assistance with makeup, advice on what to wear, etc.

This year, we've also said we would have Pre-DLV Big Sisters, for
consultation and advice via e-mail. We already have one volunteer
for this, but others are welcome as well.

I realize many of you do not yet know if you will be able to attend,
but it's fine to provisionally volunteer.

Yes, it's ok to volunteer to "help out any way you can". You will be
taken up on your offer. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Web pages:

Yes, many of us have personal web sites. A great way to become acquainted
before the big event in May is to take a look at each others' sites.
We keep a running list of web sites of DLV people, and if you have a
site and it's not listed, we would love to list it.

Just send in your URL to dlv@geekbabe.com (or just hit REPLY) and we
will add it to the list.

DLVORG list archives:

Most of the discussion and planning of DLV 2001 has taken place on a
mailing list which has been circulating between DLV volunteers and other
interested persons. The list is now closed, as you may know. It was
never a "private" list, and everybody interested was invited to
participate in it.

The archives of this list are on line at the URL:

http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/org01arc/

If you would like to familiarize yourself with the discussion and
planning that got us this far, please pull this up in your browser.

Airfare notes:

As expected, air prices have dropped.

Southwest Airlines is repeating their $99 each way fare sale this year.
A quick check shows this is valid over the DLV period and covers flights
to Las Vegas from almost all airports Southwest serves. Many of the
majors are meeting this price.

This fare must be booked by January 16. After that it's anybody's guess
what happens, but $200 rt from most major airports in the US is about
as low as it's gonna get.

They also have a $39 each way special for some short hope (such as LA)
which can be booked thru June.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Room sharing:

DLV, just like any other event where people pay for hotel rooms, can
be more affordable if people share rooms. We want to (again) have a
"roommate clearing house" in this mailing list.

If you've already booked a room, and would like for somebody else to
stay with you and share the expense, or if you're looking for somebody
who has extra space, please write to this list (dlv@geekbabe.com) with
the word "Roommate" somewhere in the subject line. Please include the
following items in your e-mail:

1. Your name.

2. Your e-mail address.

3. What date you will be arriving and what date you will be departing.

4. Do you have a room to share, or do you need space in one.

5. Any annoying habits or traits you have. (Do you smoke, do you snore,
are you a very early riser, compulsive talker, late-nite MTV addict,
etc.)

6. Any additional notes or comments.

When we have roommate items, we will include them in a special ongoing
section toward the bottom of each mailing. Those interested in sharing
rooms can then contact each other by e-mail and make arrangements.

Please remember, any roommate arrangements are strictly between the
people involved, and I or anybody else cannot be responsible if things
don't work out (etc. etc., you know the drill).
