Only 37 days left, gang!

Things are happening:

As you can see, there's a lot happening. There are a few items in this
mailing that may require some feedback from some of you. Please respond
as appropriate.

Again, welcome to those who just joined the list. We hope you can make
it in person. As you see, we have a very exciting agenda planned. If
there are any questions or concerns, please let us know.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Heads up:

30 day in advance prices (such as air and hotel) expire this week!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Golf plans (golfers please read carefully):

Here's the story, the person who coordinated the golf outing last year
will not be able to do this again this year.

>It makes me feel a little helpless, not being able to set it up this
>year. Please submit this for discussion, so we can get some feedback.

I see a number of options for those who want to golf:

1. Somebody who doesn't mind doing some legwork volunteers to coordinate
the golf outing, books a course, makes a list of golfers, etc. See notes
below.

2. Golfers get together in advance via e-mail (we can set up a DLVGOLF
mailing list if you wish) and work out details. If there's interest,
I can set up a mailing list for this in a few minutes.

3. Golfers get together in real life at an early DLV opportunity, such
as the welcome gathering on Friday, and plan a golf session for one of
the following mornings. Again, see notes below.

>Last year, before booking tee times, I first had to
>ascertain a definite number of golfers that would show
>up, and that was a job in itself. The get together at
>Goodtimes was the right venue to tally the number of

>taken by local golfers who call exactly one week
>prior, usually the minute the clubhouse opens.
>Sooo... the booking of a weekend morning tee time a
>couple of days prior will be extremely difficult, if
>not mission impossible.

Thoughts? Ideas? Volunteers?

Air tours (feedback needed):

Gina writes:

Thanks, Gina.

We need some feedback here. How many are interested in this and what
time(s) seem to be good for both pilots and passengers, as we should get
this on the schedule as a "solid" item ASAP. We have this tentatively
marked down for Friday and Sunday mornings. Will this work for you
(Gina, Densie) and for those interested in flying?

Nail suggestions:

Passing thoughts:

Wow, quite a few comments on this one ...

>>You won't pass any better by dressing down (commonly referred to as
>>"wearing a potato sack"), since you either pass or you don't regardless
[snip]

>Annie, I don't believe your not saying anything about this, your
>the one who always says to dress down to pass.

Well, if taken in the proper context, I tend to agree with many of the
points made about that. (Dressing down will not in itself assure passing,
etc.)

... and ...

>.. now I know you would probably wear jeans to the Prom, but some of us
>like to dress up, and Vegas is perfect for it.

There's a time and place for everything. Wearing jeans to the prom would
be as absurd as wearing a prom dress while sightseeing on the Strip in
the day. (Yes, I do love to dress *up* at times, look more carefully at
some of the DLV archives. :)

... and ...

>I can't believe I'm actually going to talk about clothes. I don't
>usually do this.

[snip]
>> >... Candidly, most of us DLV girls don't pass all that well, and
>> >you're going to get read anyway when we're all in a big group, so just
>> >dress to enjoy yourself.

>While dressing to enjoy yourself is a good idea, I have to disagree with
>the rest of this paragraph. I have been in T groups where bystanders
>felt that some of us were "real women" and some weren't. In fact,
>according to Annie, that was exactly what happened at the Frank Marino
>show last year.

Actually the anecdote I overheard about Frank Marino occurred in 1999,
not 2000. Quote was: "About half were real girls ..."

>Dressing differently from the rest of the crowd will
>always get you noticed. Sometimes that's desirable and sometimes it
>isn't. I've come to the conclusion, after going through the Montreal
>Experience and all, that it really makes no difference whether you're a
>man or a woman...it's more important just to be yourself and do what you
>enjoy doing. However, if presenting yourself as female is important to
>you, casual is best in most situtations.

>> >That said, I would recommend avoiding dressing like a hooker. :-)

>*shrug* Some people enjoy dressing like hookers. If that's your thing
>and you can take the consequences, go for it.

>> >You would be surprised how few ladies wear dresses or skirts during the
>> >day in LV.

>Or anywhere else in the US?

>> >Try for some dressy sandals.

>I like sandals, but would recommend them with the caveat that they can
>be much more difficult to walk in than they appear to be. If you're

>Also, in the desert climate, your feet will get dirty in sandals, and

>> >Unless you are in your early 20s, you may want to avoid shorts.

>Harumph! I've been 29 for several years now, and I wear shorts quite
>frequently, as does my mother. My grandmother, on the other hand, tends
>to dress like my grandmother, but we all know what that's about, don't
>we?

Actually, last year for the Strip tour, I remember one of our people
wearing some pink(?) shorts that looked very nice and were not at all
out of place, and she was maybe a couple years over 29. You will see
a lot of shorts in Las Vegas.

Baggage and stuff:

>All you then have to do is call UPS (1-800-PICK UPS) on the last UPS

>(The last time I did this, UPS didn't accept personal checks or credit
>cards for package pick-ups. This may have changed, I'll check on it.)

>This may sound complicated, but it's really not, and is worth the price
>of not having to lug all this stuff through the airport.

If I may make a few comments here, since I've shipped stuff to Las Vegas
this way for business. First, I would allow TWO MORE DAYS than UPS says
for delivery. Las Vegas has two large UPS depots, both very busy and
hectic, and in more than one case I've seen stuff arrive at the wrong
one, taking ONE FULL DAY to make it to the correct depot. Sure, they do
guarantee delivery, and will refund the shipping cost, but they do not
guarantee they will do anything to expedite or trace a lost package,
other than thru their normal methods, which can be very slow.

In all fairness to UPS, they seldom if ever actually lose a package,
and if you don't get it they can tell you exactly where it is, but my
experience in shipping to Las Vegas via UPS shows there's a significant
chance of a delay.

Second, please be aware most hotels do have a charge for receiving
packages for guests. At Sahara and Riviera (and others, I suspect) all
guest packages go to the Business Services Center. You pay when you
pick up or have them deliver to your room.

Golf, baths, etc.:

>> Don't know for sure. It depends highly on what course. Golfers (I hate to
>> sound like a stuck CD on this, but ...) have you made any definite plans?

>I plan to beat the ground with sticks and swear a lot...my usual golf

>...and sexy lingerie, and some Lidocaine just in case that leads to
>something later on?

Lidocaine? You plan on visiting the dentist during DLV? :)

Mailbag:

>I really do want to attend. Maybe by registering like this it will be
>the driving force I need to get off my bottom and do what I've been
>working toward for years.

Well, we certainly hope you can make it. We've had many who are new to
going out and with almost no exceptions, all have really opened up and
enjoyed themselves.

>My special needs are limited to coming up with the money and time to get
>away.

DLV can be very affordable. Las Vegas is very reasonable as far as hotel
rooms and food. You might want to put yourself on the roommate wanted
list if you want to share a room to save $$$.

>The other special need is to get out with the girls just once.

That we can take care of! :)

If you're new to everything and may need some advice and help, either
before or during DLV, there are volunteer Big Sisters who will be able
to answer your questions or concerns. Just ask if you are interested in
this.

Roommate Clearing House:

This will be an ongoing section whenever there are current roommate
items. Items will be posted until we get a note to remove them. If you
are interested in sharing a room with the individual(s) below, please
contact directly using the e-mail address(es) below.

Please keep in mind that any roommate arrangements are a private matter
between the cooperating parties only. DLV organizers and volunteers are
not responsible if there are problems or if things don't work out. We do
absolutely no screening of roommate candidates. Everything is at the
risk of those involved.
