July-August summary:

We seem to actually be somewhat ahead of schedule in organizing DLV
2002. As you will see below, the dates and a number of issues are now
agreed upon and we are starting to propose and discuss the schedule and
activities.

There are a few "call for comments" items in this mailing. Please read
them over, as they definitely pertain to what and when DLV will be this
coming year. If you have any comments or concerns, just hit REPLY.
...

The DLV 2002 organizational list is not by any means closed. If you would
like to participate in the organizing of DLV 2002, please write to
dlvorg@geekbabe.com and state you want to be added to the DLVORG mailing
list.
...

On a sad note, it appears that Michael Cagle has left Keys. His new
venue is not known at this time, but we'll report any news. For those
listening in, Michael was a performer at Keys, and was very popular with
the DLV 2001 crowd. He appears (often with microphone in hand) in many
of the DLV 2001 photos on the web pages.

Call for discussion and comments:

We are proposing the dates of Tuesday evening, April 30, thru Sunday
evening, May 5, for Diva Las Vegas 2002. This immediately precedes
Networld+Interop (actually overlaps the beginning) and avoids the
Mothers Day weekend.

The people on the DLVORG list are very close to unanimous in proposing
these dates. Because of this, the dates have been announced as
"tentative" on the DLV web site.

The floor is now open for your thoughts, comments, and concerns about
this thru the end of August. Just hit REPLY to this message, or send
mail to: dlv@geekbabe.com to make your comments. Mailings will be sent
out as needed during this month, the schedule depending on the amount of
mail received.

We want to have the dates of DLV ready to announce on September 1. (If
there's nothing further, I don't see why they cannot be announced before
September 1.)

The dates were one of five motions recently voted upon (and accepted) by
the DLVORG group.

The others are as follows:

+2. That there is no registration fee for DLV 2001

+3. All activities should be recreational or participatory in nature.

+4. There is no official "Activities Room"

+5. Proposed EVENT (DLV) Schedule Structure

A few notes on these motions.

(2) There will be no official activites room, but this does not rule out
a meeting room for informal gatherings. See item below.

(3) "Recreational or participatory" was described in some off-line
discussion as "something other than sitting in a lecture hall listening
to somebody drone on about electrolysis ..." <vbfg>

(5) The schedule voted upon is understood to be kind of a second draft
upon which we build. Broad strokes are evident, detail will be filled in
as the year progresses.

Meeting room:

We want to ask a couple questions of the general DLV audience, along the
line of the perennial discussion of a meeting room.

Would you make use of a meeting room?

Would you be willing to donate to fund such a room?

We've had quite a bit of discussion regarding this on the DLVORG list
over the past few weeks (it has been a recurring topic for several
years).

We've agreed (motion carried, see above) that we don't want any of our
activities moved from the usual on-the-town places to such a room, but
a room for informal gatherings is still an open option.

This year, we do have a volunteer to coordinate it, but we would like
to hear if such a thing is desired.

The intent of this is to provide a convenient central location for
people to gather, not as a venue to hold activities, and not as the
option of a "safer" alternative to the scheduled activities.

While we're on the subject, I should say that the plank owners,
longtimers, and DLVORG participants are strongly in agreement that DLV
will remain a "vacation, not a convention" and will continue to be
real-life and on the town.

If I may quote a few paragraphs from the DLVORG list ...

>... My only reason for even suggesting that
>was there was so many talking about it. And, you cannot find out what
>people want if you never throw an idea out on the floor.

>My main thought on a room was for it to be a place where some could get
>help if they wanted it on makeup, hair, dress, etc with set times only,
>so as not to be used as a "hiding out" room. This was not intended to
>be a push for a "staging area".

If you think a meeting room (located in one of the DLV designated hotels,
such as the Sahara) would be of used to you, please say so.

The organizers are also in agreement that there will be no blanket
pre-paid registration fee for DLV (motion carried, see above). That
means that if a meeting room is to happen, it will have to be paid for
by those who wish to use it.

If you would be willing to help fund such a thing, please say so.

If there is a desire for such a thing, we want to give our volunteer the
go-ahead signal early in the game. Conversely, if there is no desire for
it (or no desire to pay for it), we want to table the issue, as it has
come up each year in recent history.

Comments, gang?

Thank you CAT:

Thanks to Carolyn (CAT) for coordinating the "Southern Belle Society
Traveling Tgirl Summertime Road Party" this past week. (I think I got
the title correct. :)

I had a wonderful time, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, not to
mention surprising yet another cow-orker. :) :)

Hopefully CAT will repeat this again next year. I see the potential of
this becoming the "second best rolling party" there is. <vbfg> :) :)
