Only 101 days left, gang!

Welcome:

We had quite a few people join this list over the past week. If there's
anything we can do or any questions we can answer, please ask. If you
have any input, please speak up. You might want to review the previous
mailings to this list at http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv02arc/

Airport security:

>Any suggestions regarding the new baggage security policies? Hate for
>any 5 dollar an hour security people to go through my fem clothes. yuk!

and ...

>Have you thought at all about luggage inspections? Quite honestly,
>this is a major worry of mine.

We've discussed this on the DLVORG list, and I'll summarize here, there
should be enough convenient options here to make this a non-issue for
almost everybody.

Option 1: One local business and a local individual have agreed to
receive packages for our people. Just box up your stuff, take it to
your local Fedex/Emery/Pack&ship/USPS. Details of this will be given,
on request, to those who register.

This is probably the most reasonable and convenient option for those
who are concerned about being singled out for inspection.

Option 2: Most hotels will receive packages for their guests. Some have
a Business Service office which does just this, among other things. Be
advised that some hotels charge a modest fee for this service.

Option 3: Ground transportation. If you're coming from the LA area, it's
almost a "wash" in time spent between home and hotel whether you drive
or fly to LV. It's not a bad drive from San Diego, SLC, Phoenix, etc.,
and we have people regularly drive to DLV from these places and even
some farther away. Sharing rides can help, and we'll have a clearing
house section for this here on this list as the date approaches.

Option 4: Air charter. This has been discussed on the DLVORG list and is
an option if there are a number of people coming from one place. If
anybody wants to use this list to coordinate efforts on this, please do
so. With enough people, price for this can be on the same order of
magnitude as a full-fare coach or first class ticket on a major airline.

Option 5: Check/carry your bags as usual. Those people who do
inspections are looking for weapons and other nasty things and don't
really care about lacey unmentionables. They've seen it all! No, you
don't even have to make up a story about carrying all that stuff for
your sister/wife/gf/grandmother/cat/whoever. They don't care.

Anyway, at least one of these should work for anybody.

Slumber Party:

>> Later Slumber Party (and swap meet)

>That sounds like fun. What's it going to be like?

Maybe Leanna can comment a bit more, but here's part of the discussion
that went on when it was planned ...

+>>>Getting excited about DLV 2002.... Seems to be coming up fast.... Would
+>>>anyone be interested in a Baby Doll Pajama Party?

+>>Ladies? (Gentlemen?)

+>Yes, I would! Sounds like lots of fun! That's one thing I always wanted
+>to do but I missed out on not being a girl.

+Well, now's your chance. :)

+>>Slumber party? (Jumbo shrimp? Small crowd? Freezer burn? Inside out?) :)

+>Very funny!

Idea is to get a suite at a place such as Residence Inn, and party into
the wee hours. :)

Shoes, Wigs, T Shirts:

Tina writes:

Quick check of the web shows http://www.lvclubwear.com/

The web site gives an address way out on West Sahara, but I'm assuming
the place above is the same ownership or maybe they moved. Yes, they do
go up to XL in some items.

>Even more importantly, can I assume that Leonard's Wide Shoes is a
>ladies shoe store? Does anybody know anything about it (t*-friendly
>status, selection in larger wide sizes, price range, etc.)?

I know where it is, but I've never been in the store. I assume it's a
general shoe store specializing in wide sizes.

{duh} I just checked the web. There is a www.leonardswideshoes.com
domain registered, but the page does not come up, at least for me.
Checking Altavista for matches, I get an ad at www.oooobabybaby.com
<bfg> that says they have womens sizes to 13WW.

Update: www.leonardswideshoes.com does come up now. They say that have
womens sizes 5-13.
. . . . .

>Wigs:

Ok, next time I edit that page, I'll make a note that both do styling
and the turnaround times for both places. Please remind me if I space
that off. :)

>(Yes Day, as in all day. As in 24 hours.) :-)

Uh, maybe for those who are naturally blonde it is. :)
. . . . .

>T-shirts:

>I think it's wonderful that you do the shirts every year.

Glad you like them. :)

>Have you ever seen a T shirt with a V neck that would work with the DLV

>shirt done on a V neck.

Let me see what's available. Both cotton and poly/blend take ink well, so
just about anything would work. In the worst case, you could find a shirt
you like, send it to me, and I'll screen it when I do the big run.

Update: The one distributor I use has v-necks, but not in the color I want
to use this year ... still looking.

Would anybody else prefer such a thing?

Skydiving:

Is there (still) any interest in getting a group together to do one or
both of the following:

1. A simulated jump in a wind tunnel?

2. A brief class followed by an actual tandem jump?

Both of these are available in the LV area and we do have a volunteer
willing to coordinate such an activity.

Yes, I know this is quite different from what is normally expected at a
t* gathering, but it was brought up last summer as a serious suggestion
for those who want it. If you're interested, please reply and say so.

Travelocity:

>>Bottom line: Travelocity (and some others, maybe) are booking rooms for
[snip]

>Travelocity sucks. Lately they give you less choices and sky-high
>prices. I use Orbitz or Expedia.

I do use Travelocity for hotels (not for LV) as they do seem to be a bit
better than the others on that, but I have to agree that their low-ball
flight prices are not what they used to be. Whenever I check Travelocity
for OMA<->LAS fares, the low ones always route via some out of the way
place such as Minneapolis or St Louis or even Oakland. Travelocity seems
to have dropped Midwest Express (my favorite airline), at least from
their preferred carriers.

I haven't used Orbitz very much, but I'm happy with them and they do
give the most flight options. My only gripe about Orbitz is that for
hotels, it's another mouse click (and a slow back-refresh) to get price.

I haven't used Expedia at all.

I have noticed that NONE of the online services book Southwest anymore,
which is almost always the lowest in price to Las Vegas from many
places. You can book on line at www.flyswa.com. 9 times out of 8, these
people seem to have the lowest fare to LV.

Rooms and rides:

>Hi i would like to know if i can pre register for any hotel rooms thow
>you??? or should i just call there and do it my self??? if i can please
>let me know if i can do this,,,,

We (the DLV organizers and volunteers) don't take reservations for
rooms. It's up to those who are attending to make reservations. We do
suggest a few places, and there is more information in this mailing.

One thing we do ask you to do is register for DLV at the url:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg.html

This gets you on the list of those who will be attending and allows us
to better plan for the event.

>i don't mind shareing a room with one or more ladies, as long as they
>don't smoke...thanks toni from geppato@hotmail.com

Room sharing information is shown below. If you're interested in sharing
a room, just send in a note with the information.

>i just might drive thee sence i live so close,,,, if there are any
>ladies that live along the way that would like to ride with me then
>please have them e-mail as well, thanks

Hold that thought. As we get closer to the DLV date there may be a call
for ride sharing.

More hotel:

>>The absolute lowest in price (and probably quality) that I know of is
>>the Western Hotel downtown, but PLEASE DON'T EVEN >>THINK<< OF STAYING
>>THERE unless you have far more guts than brains.

>Does this mean that the Del-Mar has moved up on the list?

Hasn't moved up at all. :)

Quite honestly, if I had to choose between the two (Western or Delmar) I
would think hard, and then probably pick the Delmar. Delmar does a good
amount of business and the area is well-patroled. The immediate area
around the Western is totally skanky!

I would bet that the Delmar costs about three times what the Western
does. They do have to pay for those large screen TV's for adult videos,
and those heart-shaped beds, and for somebody to clean the stains off
the mirrors on the ceiling. :) Besides, the Delmar makes a much better
background for a photo-op. :)

More slumber party:

>Thank you for all the good information.

You're very welcome. :)

>I'm about to make hotel arrangements and would like to know the
>location of the Wednesday night Slumber Party. This will be the
>deciding factor on where I stay.

I don't think the location of the slumber party is in stone yet, but
the Residence Inn has been mentioned for this.

Leeanna, have you decided anything definite on this?

Residence Inn is quite expen$ive, far more so than the three places we
are suggesting. The Residence Inn I'm thinking is actually not that far
from any of the three and a ride will most certainly be available.

>Looking forward to my first DLV.

And we're looking forward to having you.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Budget suites:

>Noticed in the last mailing some concern about finding the cheapest
>place to stay for DLV. I have not seen it mentioned before but Budget
>Suites always has a great weekly deal.

I (think I) mentioned it when I was discussing those extended stay
places, but ...

>It's been a couple of years since I sent anyone over there but I
>remember it was around $225 for the entire week.

That is definitely a good deal, coming out to $30-ish per day. :)

>Now, if you don't hook up your phone and bring your own pillow and
>linens the cost goes down even more. Maid service is optional too.
>They also have refrigerators and stoves in each unit so you can do your
>own cooking as well.

>There is one on Paradise Road in the Hard Rock area......one behind The
>Stardust....and one on Boulder Hwy by Sam's Town to my recollection.

Thanks for the report. This is quite reasonable, although you don't get
the convenience of a casino right down the hall. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Room sharing:

DLV, just like any other event where people pay for hotel rooms, can
be more affordable if people share rooms. We want to (again) have a
"roommate clearing house" in this mailing list.

If you've already booked a room, and would like for somebody else to
stay with you and share the expense, or if you're looking for somebody
who has extra space, please write to this list (dlv@geekbabe.com) with
the word "Roommate" somewhere in the subject line. Please include the
following items in your e-mail:

1. Your name.

2. Your e-mail address.

3. What date you will be arriving and what date you will be departing.

4. Do you have a room to share, or do you need space in one.

5. Any annoying habits or traits you have. (Do you smoke, do you snore,
are you a very early riser, compulsive talker, late-nite MTV addict,
etc.)

6. Any additional notes or comments.

When we have roommate items, we will include them in a special ongoing
section toward the bottom of each mailing. Those interested in sharing
rooms can then contact each other by e-mail and make arrangements.

Please remember, any roommate agreements are private arrangements
strictly between the people involved, and I or anybody else cannot be
responsible if things don't work out (etc. etc., yada-yada, you know the
drill).
