Welcome:

First of all, welcome to those who just registered or joined the list.
We're hoping to see you in person later this month. If you have any
questions or concerns, please let us know.

Things are happening very fast, but there's still time to get on almost
everything.
. . .

>From now on we'll be sending this list out as needed, sticking to the
Sunday morning schedule if at all possible. Don't be surprised if
there are some mid-week mailings between now and DLV.
. . .

Jessica M. from Las Vegas, your e-mail is bouncing and we have no means
of contact for you. Please get us a working e-mail address. If anybody
is acquainted with this person, please pass this on.
. . .

All DLV correspondence should be caught up at this time, including
requests for resend of items, manual schedule changes, etc. If there's
anything still undone, please send in a reminder.
. . .

A problem was reported with the DLV Discussion Forum causing some very
old archived messages to appear again instead of the current messages.
This took a while to observe and fix since it was not affecting all of
the messages. It's fixed now. This only affects the web view of the
forum, not the e-mail and digest versions.

Thanks to Pauline for reporting this.
. . .

For those who want to attend and have not registered, that's the first
thing you need to do. Register at:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg2005.html

Shortly after you register, you'll receive a validation letter via
e-mail. It's very important that you respond to this as is noted. If you
don't receive this after you register, something is wrong and you need
to let us know. The most common problem with registration is
spelling/typo errors when entering the e-mail address. Please be careful
when doing this!
. . .

A few days after you register you'll get your activity selection e-mail.
This will have a link to your own personal activity sign-up screen.

Schedule changes and additions:

There have been a few schedule changes.

We regret any inconvenience. Some of these were finalized literally
minutes before our deadline.

Although the schedule is still officially tentative, we will try to
minimize any further changes unless they are absolutely unavoidable.

* Due to road and facility closures (flood damage and slower than
expected repairs), the side trip to Death Valley will be postponed until
DLV 2006. In its place for this year will be a side trip to Valley Of
Fire State Park, which is a very scenic area north of the Las Vegas
metro area.

* Another show has been added to our schedule. On Wednesday evening we
will take in Showgirls Of Magic at the San Remo. This will be one of the
last chances to see SOM at San Remo, since the showroom will no longer
be there following the Hooters transition.

* The Art Tour has been extended, and will take place on both Thursday
morning and Thursday afternoon. See Art Tour feature below.

* English High Tea has been scheduled for 2:00pm on Saturday.

* Due to a schedule conflict, the Carluccio's Dinner has been moved to
Saturday evening, prior to the Michael Cagle Show. Also note the new
start times for HH and dinner on Saturday evening.

* A Southern Belle Society Social will occur during Happy Hour at
Carluccio's on Saturday. See note below.

* The start times for the Limo Tour and the Charles Bar have been
adjusted. Please note the new start times.

Activity sign-up:

On Friday, activity sign-up mailings were sent out to all who we show
having validated registrations.

IF YOU REGISTERED FOR DLV 2005 AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS, SOMETHING IS
WRONG AND WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT. If you haven't received your
activity sign-up mailing, please report it by e-mail to dlv@geekbabe.com
and we will see what happened. We do keep delivery records on these so
they are very easy to trace.

About half of these have been done already, they literally started
coming in within a few minutes of being sent out. Thanks to those who
have already sent them in, as it gives us a good idea of what the demand
for the various activities will be.

Even though the initial response was brisk, none of the very popular
activities are approaching full at this time. Don't procrastinate,
though, as in most cases it will be first signed, first served.

Those who sign up for either Bowling and/or the Limo Tour will receive
payment instructions via e-mail shortly after you make your selections.
If you sign up for either one and don't receive them, again, something
is wrong and we need to know about it.

Those who registered after last Friday at about 9:00pm CST will receive
their activity sign-up mailings in a few days.

If there's any difficulty with activities sign-up, or any concerns,
please let us know. We can always go in manually and straighten things
out.

We do appreciate everybody's cooperation with the automated process. I
know it is a bit impersonal, but if we had to manually sign up well over
100 people for over 25 activities, it would be a task that we just could
not handle. Thanks, gang! :)

Activity highlight - Art Tour:

Most general mailings between now and DLV will feature one of our
activities in depth. This week we feature Thursday's Art Tour:
. . .

The art tour this year will have two (or more) parts. JoAnn and I
(Sarah) are pretty happy with the options we will be placing on the DLV
calendar this year. Dress will be L.V. Daytime Standard and I would
suggest you wear shoes that you know are comfortable for several hours.

After meeting at the assembly point we will visit the Las Vegas Art
Museum on Thursday Morning. Although it is a mainstream location, there
were very few other people there and it becomes a great place for those
just getting used to being out in public.

It also seems to be a good activity for S.O.'s and we welcome any and
all who would like to have a low stress, casual outing. The exhibit this
year will be "15 Santa Fe Artists" and in the past the admission has
been $6.00 ($5.00 for seniors). There aren't many details available on
the show just yet, but the museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and
that goes a long way with me.

As long as we don't get lost it's about a 15-20 minute drive and we can
take our own sweet time at the museum and in the museum shop.

We will return to the gathering point in time for Lunch With or Without
Ginger.

In the afternoon we have plenty of options as well. For those interested
in things older than ourselves, the Guggenheim Museum in the Venetian is
hosting "In Search of Immortality", a collection of Egyptian artifacts
that have never been seen in this country. The cost of admission is
around $20.00 and is in a very main stream venue.

A second option would be the Liberace Museum. What can I say? The cost
is $12.50 ($8.50 for seniors), and there are two-for-one coupons in
various magazines available in most Las Vegas locations. I would have to
say it is a main stream venue, but somehow it seems appropriate that it
should be on the DLV agenda. We will finish up in time to allow
participants to prepare for the production show or other evening
activity.

Sign-up is requested but not required for this activity. You may sign
up for it on your activity sign-up screen. Big thanks to Sarah and
JoAnn for making this activity happen! :)

Dress - "How do I look?":

Most of our general mailings will contain some item on the topic of
dress. This week we discuss the sometimes touchy subject of asking
for opinions and giving opinions.
. . . . .

Hey viewers! It's time to play that exciting game of "How Do I Look"!

It's simple to play, here are the rules!

* Player 1 asks player 2 "How do I look?"

* Player 2 then has to guess what player 1 really means and what
player really 1 wants to hear.

* If player 2 guesses right (>>DING-DING<<), everybody wins, or so they
may think, and everybody goes home happy.

* If player 2 guesses wrong (BBBBZZZZzzzzzttt!), everybody loses and
player 1 doesn't speak to player 2 for a month!

Hey, that sounds like fun! ... ... NOT!
. . .

"Do I look OK?"

"How do I look?"

If there were ever loaded questions, these are some of them!

If you're misfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a question
like these, it's almost impossible to know what is really being asked
for. Does the asker >>REALLY<< want to know, or does she actually want
something else?

Sometimes, yes, the asker does indeed want to know if there's anything
wrong, anything's out of place, etc., but quite often, unfortunately,
what she really wants to hear is that she looks nice, maybe young, slim,
sexy, cute, GG-ish, or whatever.

Those who are put in the position of answering such a question often times
don't know what the asker really wants.

Yes, it is a game. (HDIL) A game not unlike those described in those
Berne or Harris parapsychology self-help books of the 70's, right up
there with NIGYYSOB! :) (Google it if you're curious.) :)

Wouldn't it be nice if there were some easy to understand rules for this
little game?!

Well, for the duration of DLV, let's make a pact among ourselves and
agree to play the game of How Do I Look by the following rules:

RULE #1: When at DLV, don't ask how you look unless you REALLY want an
honest opinion!

A corollary to this rule is to AVOID ASKING if all you want to hear is
how good/cute/sexy/whatever you look!

If you do indeed want some feedback, please be explicit as to what you
want. "Do you think these shoes go with this outfit?" is much more
meaningful than "How do I look?" and much easier to answer.

RULE #2: When at DLV, please assume that the asker is playing by the
rules and wants an honest answer.

Be tactful, but be honest.

RULE #3: If you ask somebody how you look and you don't hear what you
want to hear, don't get upset at the person you asked and don't take
it out on him or her.

Let's get in the habit of using feedback honestly at DLV.

"Yes, you look great!" might make the asker feel warm and fuzzy for a
few minutes, but it's doing nobody any good.

If you are asked for an opinion, please be very explicit as well. If
something in particular of the outfit or look just "doesn't work",
mention it specifically. If the look and the outfit look ok, but you
don't think it would be appropriate for the activity at hand (such as a
strapless cocktail dress and 6" heels for Lunch (wowoG) at the buffet)
then please say so.

Another thing to consider is that what looks good to one person may
not to another. Personal tastes and styles vary quite a bit, and in
a group our size, we cover just about all points on the spectrum.

A recent example of this was on the DLV Discussion Forum where one
reader asked for an opinion as to if "fashionably torn" jeans were
appropriate for a certain activity. One response was that, in the
opinion of the responder, the terms "torn" and "fashionably" do not
go together. :)

And, let's make a rule that if you're uncomfortable playing the game of
"How Do I Look?" altogether, you don't have to play. Please feel free to
opt out. You don't have to explain anything, just say that you choose to
not give opinions on how another looks.
